Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
3/28/06

Greetings Riders,

Well, Hearts to Heroes 2006 is now behind us. I would like to thank everyone who attended this year that helped to make this a very special event.
At 8am the bikes started rolling in through the flag draped entrance. The program started promptly at 10am with our tribute to our armed forces. You can click here to play this 2:00 video. The program went a little longer than I had anticipated, but sometimes you have to go with the flow and let the unplanned and unexpected have their moments. We then had the colors presented by the Marine Corp. color guard followed by the National Anthem by Erin. We then had 12 youngsters from the "Stars" soccer team recite the "Pledge of Allegiance" for us.

I announced to the crowd of about 1500 that this was not a political event.
This next hour was to focus on the needed support for our troops that are currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and to honor our Veterans that have already served our Country. Regardless what you feel about this war, these guys are over there fighting to preserve our right to have our own opinions. We need to support them as they do their job and defend our freedom.

A lot of times we are judged by what we wear, what we say and what sticker we might display on our bumper.
Sometimes those outward signs might not tell the whole story. For some people, doing what we are doing here today can be mistaken for being just a "pro war" rally, and not simply gathering to support our brothers and sisters who are "at war".

No one wants war, we can all ask questions of our politicians, but ultimately "History" will tell us if any war is right or wrong.
Regardless what we think of the reasons for war, we always need to support our soldiers in the battlefield. Watch this video by Chely Wright. She really tells the story of being a troop supporter very well. The song is called Bumper of my SUV. Click Here to view.

Next I had the honor to spend some time with one of our young soldiers a couple of weeks who had just returned from Iraq after being blown up by an IED.
His name is Pvt. Daniel Stackhouse. I was humbled to hear his story and honored to be in his presence. This experience made me realize how "out of touch" I am with our what are Soldiers are going through over there. It has made me work harder to do the best I can for all of those who are sacrificing to defend our country from terrorism. Click Here to watch Pvt. Stackhouse's story.

I once again brought back
Jonnie and Brookie, now 11 and 13 years old, to sing the song "American Tears". And they once again ended this song with a standing ovation from the crowd.

We were then on to
Margy Bons. When I heard about Margy Bons story I felt I had to interview her and let her tell her story. I can't imagine what it must be like to get the knock on your door with the news that you have lost a child to war. But Margy has persevered and has become a very active volunteer for Packages from Home to give as much comfort as she can to all of the other men and women that are still in harm's way. Watch Margy's story.

World War II Veterans. I felt that I had to do a tribute to our World War II Veterans for a few reasons. One reason was that if it wasn't for their courage, this Country probably wouldn't be where it is today. The second reason is that most WWII Veterans are now over 80 years old and I don't know how much longer we are going to be able to honor them in their presence. And lastly, because my Father is a WWII Veteran and I wanted to take this opportunity to personally honor him for his service in the Navy over 65 years ago. This was a very emotional moment for me to stand on the stage with all of these Veterans and give my Dad a hug. Click Here to Watch the video.

Vietnam War. I grew up watching the reports of the Vietnam War as a child on TV and seeing how these Men were treated as they returned. I had personally talked to Vietnam Veterans who had been spit on, had tomatoes thrown at them and cursed at for serving their Country. I really felt this was a time to focus on these men and give them the welcome home that most of them have never gotten. So I played a video to honor their service and then in an impromptu moment had them all come up in front of the stage so that everyone in the building could give them the welcome home that they had never gotten.

For those of you that were there, I think you will agree that this was an incredible moment when well over 100 Vietnam Veterans got out of their seat and came forward for a rousing round of applause from everyone in the building.
In my opinion, Vietnam Veterans are every bit the heroes as any other Soldier that has ever served our Country. I talked to some of these guys later that said this was their first "Welcome Home" in 35 years. I think everyone would say that it was a privilege for them to honor these Vietnam Veterans. I'm glad I was able to do this for them. God Bless you all. Click Here for video.

Erin then performed the song
"Not too far from here". That was a good song to end this Tribute on. Click Here to view.

We then ended the program
with an Armed Forces tribute called "Dear Daddy" followed by an all Veterans Tribute to the song of Lee Greenwood's, God Bless The USA. Pastor Don Wilson then closed us in prayer and we were on our way to GCC for the conclusion of the event. Click Here to view Pastor Don's close.

There were a couple of Korean War Veterans that felt slighted that I did not mention that war.
It was not that they were forgotten, it was just that my time allotted did not allow for that. I apologize to all of the Korean War Veterans for not addressing them specifically. Next year I will have a tribute to those Veterans. Please accept my apology, I did not mean to lessen the importance of all that gave their lives in that war.

We were then escorted by the Maricopa County
Sheriff's Office in what might have been one of the smoothest rides I have ever been on. We ended at GCC with some words by Mike Broomhead, Congressman Trent Franks, Kathy Lewis from Packages from Home and USM Col. Smith. We also had a satellite phone call from USM Major Tom Marble greeting the crowd from Bahrain. At 1:00 we had six sky divers jump into the football field each carrying flags from the branches of service. Erin then closed us out with some music to end the day.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone
who attended this ride and helped with this event. And thanks to Pastor Don Wilson and the CCV staff, the R.O.C.K. riding group from CCV, the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office, Dave Whitten of Packages from Home and the many others who contributed their time to make this happen.

As I said at the event, my prayer is that I won't need to do this again next year, I hope that all of our troops will be home safe and sound by that time.
But if they are not, I already have some big ideas for next year. As I always like to say, "my accomplishments are only limited by my dreams". And my dreams are big for next year's Cyclerides.com Hearts to Heroes. We still have shirts available for individual purchase for $10 each. Click Here.

We also thought it would be a good idea to send some of these shirts to the troops to let them know what we are doing here to support them.
If you are a company, or an individual that would like to buy some of these shirts to be sent to the troops, you can write a check directly to Packages From Home and receive a tax deduction. They are $10 per shirt and you could buy 10, 20, 50 or more shirts that would be sent to Iraq in your name or the name of your company and could include a note or card of well wishes from your employees. All proceeds would go to Packages From Home. Email me at info@cyclerides.com of your interest and I will give you a call back to discuss.

Thanks again for your support.
Barry

As usual, there were a lot of good pictures. I have posted 159 of them.
