Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
3/10/03
Greetings Riders,
Finally, some short sleeve shirt riding weather. Wow! Does this feel good. Being a confirmed desert rat I am loving the warmer weather. Give me a motorcycle,
a great route to ride, mid 90's weather and I am a happy camper. The extended forecast shows cooling to the mid
70's over the weekend and then back to the mid 80's again. There is nothing like Arizona in the 80's. Hopefully
this will hold out through Arizona Bike Week for everyone to enjoy. There is a lot of information in this letter
so I will get right to it.
This past weekend I was exposed to a humid mid 80's that wasn't as pleasant. Last Friday
we headed to Daytona Beach for Bike Week. (you can click on the following
links for pictures) If you remember last week's article, I mentioned that
we had gone to New York to meet with the Teutal's of Orange County Choppers. While we were there, Paul Sr.
suggested that we go to Daytona to see the madness that surrounds their booth to get an idea of how to arrange
the setup for the event here in Arizona. So we made another 54 hour whirlwind trip to the East Coast. We left at
6:30am Friday morning to fly into Jacksonville. Arriving there at around 2:00pm we rented a car and embarked on
the 2 hour drive to Daytona
Beach. Having never been there, I had no idea what to expect.
Much to my surprise it was total gridlock with traffic.
There were thousands of motorcycles and cars all trying to get to one place...Main St. in Daytona Beach.
Unfortunately, the only way to get there is across the main bridge that takes you
directly into town. I thought Laughlin was bad for traffic, but that is only for a mile. This is for 5 miles or
more depending on the time of day. In comparison, Daytona makes Laughlin look like H.O.G. Chapter Ride in volume
of people.
We finally made it to our hotel in time to freshen up and make the 3 block stroll to
Main St. where all the action takes place. This is 5 blocks of bars,
restaurants, vendor shops and total elbow to elbow people lined up behind barricades to watch
the motorcycles cruise the streets. The further into the night you go, the more people are packed in. It can literally
take 10 minutes to walk one block on the sidewalk. The bars close at 3:00am and there are still thousands of people
on the streets and motorcycles cruising Main. If you go next year,
my suggestion would be to hangout at a place called "The Bank & Blues
Bar".
This is a really cool 2 level bar featuring the band The Razorbacks that plays
there every year during Bike Week.
Saturday I had the opportunity to take 2 laps around the Daytona International Speedway on a motorcycle. Every year the Speedway allows one group of about 100 riders to ride around
the track. Valvoline sponsored this year's Daytona Cruise Lap 2004.
At 6:00 am I was up from 2 hours sleep to head to the Speedway where we took two laps around the track led by the
2004 Daytona Pace
Car and then ended up in Victory Lane for a group
picture on the stage. It was a very cool experience and gave me a whole new respect for those guys that take those
60 degree banked turns at 180 mph. Wow! What a site. Thanks to Charlie
Mitchell of Custom Performance and Dennis Handel of Valvoline for arranging this opportunity for me.
Saturday afternoon we finally got around to doing what we had gone there for and that was to see the Orange County Choppers location and visit with Paul
Sr. and Paul Jr. as they were signing autographs. It was amazing the amount of people around these guys taking
pictures and waiting for autographs. There were Men and Women, young and old wanting to get a shot of The Teutal's
and their theme
bikes. They had their latest creation on display that you
will be seeing the first part of May called the Dixie Chopper bike. This
might be their best creation yet. They took an industrial lawn mower engine, chromed it out and mounted it in a chopper frame
using mower blades as spokes for the wheels as well as spinners. Very, very innovative. They told me that the motor
produces 120 hp.
It was then off to the Iron Horse Corral to see Mikey, Vinny and Cody. Once
again, another sea of people waiting for autographs. The guys had talked to so many people over the last week that
they had totally lost their voices and were using pre-written pieces of paper
to communicate with their fans. But they were all still extremely courteous and accommodated everyone with handshakes, autographs and pictures. We are still deciding on the location to house the Orange
County Choppers event here in Phoenix. Paul Sr. and Paulie are supposed to come here in the next couple of weeks
to finalize the pick of the location. I will let you know when that is done and keep you up to date as the
event moves forward. Thanks to Michael Campo of OCC for showing us
around.
We finished off that night with dinner and one last crawl down Main St. The last
Saturday
Night of the event is reported to be the craziest
night of all. After being in the middle of it, I can validate that assessment. You could tell that just by
the sounds and attitudes of the motorcycle engines combined with the atmosphere of those catching
one last night of partying before they go back to the cold weather. At 3:00 am we started our trip back to Jacksonville
for our 7:00am flight back to Phoenix. As you can see by my schedule, sleep was not an option. But the 4 hours
I got while I was there got me by.
Overall I thought Daytona Bike was an extremely pleasant experience. If I were going to spend $200 per night to go to a run, I would much rather spend it
in Daytona than the Laughlin River Run. The only downside is the traffic. But I guess that can also
be some of the excitement as well. If you decide to go next year, you will enjoy yourself.

Upcoming Events
March 26th - April 4th
Arizona Bikeweek. Rawhide is going to be the new home for Arizona
Bike Week and the Handlebar Saloon. ABW is going to make their own town made up of vendors, restaurants and
bars. You will be able to cruise down a long "Main Street" similar to Sturgis. You will
be able to park your bikes, walk around, eat, drink and watch the action go by all within Cyclefest. YOUR
motorcycles will now be a part of the venue all throughout the vendor village.
Now that is what we have been asking for!
The Rawhide Pavilion will be transformed into the Handlebar Saloon and will be open every night for the entire run of bike week starting with the "Cajun Party" on March 31st. There will be nightly activities, bands and events including flat track racing, biker bull riding on real bulls and much more. Cyclefest will run from April 1st through April 4th. Mar 31st will kick off Cyclefest with a performance from "The Little River Band". One of my big questions was, "What about the dust?" The answer is that they are spending over $20,000 to treat all of the dirt in the area with a product that will make it like asphalt. Dust will not be an issue. I was very excited to hear all of the changes for Arizona Bike Week for the coming year. If this turns out anything like it is planned, Arizona might be on its way to becoming one of those major Annual events that we deserve to be. This is just a brief synopsis of what is to come. You can go to www.arizonabikeweek.com for more information. They are planning and updating events on a daily basis. I am really looking forward to seeing how this all works out. It should be fun. Don't miss the Discovery Channel Great Bike Buildoff on Saturday, April 3rd.
