Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
3/3/04

Greetings Riders,

I don't know if it is the same for you, but it's amazing to me that the older I get, the more time I spend recalling things out of the blue that happened 30 years ago.
Maybe it is a song that triggers it, an old movie, a persons name or even a familiar smell. I guess it is because that the older you get, the more experiences you have to draw from. I mean, I don't remember at the age of 12, sitting on the front porch sharing a bomb pop with my buddies and saying, "Remember when we were 8? I'm not that old, but there has been enough water under the bridge to grab a bucket full of memories now and then. And as it usually ends up, it has to do with motorcycles.

Ten days ago I was able to add another experience that I will be recalling in the future.
Most of you know of or have seen the show on Discovery Channel called American Chopper. It is the reality TV show that features The Teutal family of Orange County Choppers as they build these incredible theme bikes for different companies. The show has become the highest rated program on Discovery Channel pulling in over 3 million viewers per week and has made Paul Sr., Paul Jr., Mikey and their bikes instant celebrities. The commercials recently debuted on the Superbowl by AOL featuring the Teutal's have even taken them to a whole new level.

About 6 months ago I was introduced to a guy who was working on bringing the Teutal's and their bikes to Arizona for an event. He asked if I would partner with him for the motorcycle aspect of the show. I accepted and we started the process of arranging their appearance. On February 20th we flew back to New York to finalize the deal. I have to admit, I was excited to see the behind the scenes of what I had seen on TV for the last year. As with anything like this, you always wonder if it is really going to be anything like what you envision.

We took the 11:30 PM
red-eye out on Thursday night and arrived in Newark at around 5:40 am New York time. We got our rental car and drove the 90 miles up state for our 9:00 am meeting. As we came upon their place, located on a small 2 lane county road out in the middle of the New York countryside, we saw the familiar Orange County Choppers sign on the side of the road. We turned into the driveway and drove down about 50 yards to the OCC sign and door that we had seen many times before on TV. After being let in the secured door to the office by Paul Jr's girlfriend Whitney, we looked at memorabilia on the walls commemorating some of their accomplishments. A few minutes later the door to the office opened and Paul Sr. came out to introduce himself and invite us in.

This must be reality TV at its finest, because Paul Sr. is just as you see him on the show.
All business, but yet has a sincere side and is very hands on with what happens with his company. Just like on the show. We had an hour long meeting with their office manager, Paul Sr. and Mikey who was very involved with the discussions. Paul Jr. and Mike Campo joined in later as we were wrapping up. These guys are all extremely genuine and haven't let all of this fame go to their heads. One thing that I came away with was that they are extremely concerned about their fans and want to do everything they can to accommodate them. I found that very refreshing in this age of prima donna movie stars.

Once the meeting was over they posed for a
group shot, invited us to look around at the bikes and watch them as Discovery was there filming another episode of the show. We were able to see most of the theme bikes including the Fire Bike, Jet Bike, Spider Bike and the Christmas Bike. We were also able to see a finished bike that has not been aired yet called the Statue of Liberty Bike. The bike is made from copper removed in the statue's 1984 rehabilitation and features a torch-topped carburetor that lights up. This could be one of their best shows.

We are going to make this a total Motorsports event centered around Orange County Choppers.
They will bring their theme bikes and most of the people that you have seen on the show. All of their appearances in the past 6 months have drawn 30-40,000 people per day. We are still working on the venue that will be big enough to handle the crowds and will be meeting with them again to finalize all the details. We also plan on bringing in a top named act to entertain on Saturday night. My choice is someone like The Marshall Tucker Band. The dates are November 5, 6, and 7 which is the soonest that OCC is available. We look forward to putting on a fantastic 3 Day Event with Orange County Choppers that will be fun for everyone from 8 to 80 years of age. I will update you as things develop.

When we got back to the Newark airport
we had some time to kill so we took a train to New York City's Penn Station for some pizza. We irritated the New Yorkers by playing tourist for about an hour and were on the train back to the airport for the 5 1/2 hour flight home. Click here for all pictures from the day. Here is a short video I put together really quick to give you a feel for the Teutal's and the area. Click Here for a recent article in USA Today about AOL and the Teutal's.

March 26th - April 4th
Arizona Bikeweek. Rawhide is going to be the new home for Arizona Bike Week and the Handlebar Saloon. ABW is going to make their own town made up of vendors, restaurants and bars. You will be able to cruise down a long "Main Street" similar to Sturgis, park your bikes, walk around, eat, drink and watch the action go by. YOUR motorcycles will now be a part of the venue all throughout the vendor village. Now that is what we have been asking for!

The Rawhide Pavilion will be transformed into the Handlebar Saloon and will be open every night for the entire run of bike week starting with the "Cajun Party" on March 31st. There will be nightly activities, bands and events including flat track racing, biker bull riding on real bulls and much more. Cyclefest will run from April 1st through April 4th. Mar 31st will kick off Cyclefest with a performance from "The Little River Band". One of my big questions was, "What about the dust?" The answer is that they are spending over $20,000 to treat all of the dirt in the area with a product that will make it like asphalt. Dust will not be an issue. I was very excited to hear all of the changes for Arizona Bike Week for the coming year. If this turns out anything like it is planned, Arizona might be on its way to becoming one of those major Annual events that we deserve to be. This is just a brief synopsis of what is to come. You can go to www.arizonabikeweek.com for more information. They are planning and updating events on a daily basis. I am really looking forward to seeing how this all works out. It should be fun. Don't miss the Discovery Channel Great Bike Buildoff on Saturday, April 3rd.

I have talked about these before and many of you have seen me with them on. It seems that I never hit the freeways without them. That is the new molded earphones that plug into an MP3 player. They serve as earplugs to protect you from the wind noise as well as headphones for you to enjoy music as you ride. They are OUTSTANDING! AZ Earprotection has now made it a lot easier for you to get these and the regualr molded ear plugs. They will have a representative that will be floating on Wednesday nights between 3 Harley Dealerships in the Valley. Click Here to see when they will be near you. You will not be disappointed. They are worth every penny.
