Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
11/27/02

Greetings Riders,

Wow, what a Turkey Run last Sunday! I don't have an official count, but from my untrained eye it appeared that there were well over 600-700 motorcycles that converged on St. Vincent De Paul with Turkey's and other fixings on the backs of their bikes. It was the first year for Mrs. Cyclerides and I to participate in this event and we were very impressed. I was told that this was by far the biggest one yet. This ride kind of had the same feel as the Kicks for Kids Ride that I was talking about in last week's newsletter. Everyone was just happy to get together with a bunch of other riders and help out a worthy cause. And judging by the remarks from the head of St. Vincent De Paul, he was very impressed with the generosity of the riders that supported this Turkey Drive and said he wouldn't miss this event next year. We won't either.

You would think that strapping a turkey on the back of your bike and riding to the starting point would be no big deal. For most people, I'm sure that was true. For me, it was a little more exciting. Have you ever heard that old saying that says something about "the best laid plans"? Well, I had good plans, but I must have had a turkey fresh out of Houdini's escape artist school. I took my frozen friend and placed him on the back of Mrs. C's bike, securing him with a couple of bungee's for the ride to St. Vinny's. I knew he was a little slick as a result of his cryogenic state, but I thought that he would be secure for the duration of the ride. So off we go to top off our tanks with gas and head to our starting point.

As I am riding behind Mrs. C., I notice that my featherless friend is attempting to make a break for freedom. It appears that this turkey is not living up to the reputation of being the dumbest animal on the planet. He is actually using his frozen state to slip through the bungee cords and make his escape. As I was making my attempt to catch up with Mrs. C. to alert her of the impending calamity, she ran directly over a recessed manhole cover. You guessed it! For the first time ever, my fine frozen featherless friend with no head was now in the midst of his first flight ever. Facing the insurmountable odds of 100% gravity and 0% lift, my former flawless frozen turkey came crashing to the pavement and rolled end over end for about 50 yards. Not even a 40 mph headwind and being launched from the back of a V-Rod was able to help my friend in his quest to successfully fly for more than just a few seconds.

I quickly stopped and went back to retrieve my fallen bird and to survey the damage. Really wasn't too bad considering the ride he had taken. The only visible damage was a few abrasions and a broken neck. But the neck thing probably happened when that turkey farmer caught up with him a couple of weeks ago. In the end, I guess this turkey did uphold the less than intelligent reputation of the species. Why else would a bird that has no head, no feathers and is frozen try to fly off the back of a motorcycle?

Kicks For Kids Toy Run. This is the my favorite ride of the year! And it is not just me. Over 4200 participated in this ride last year. Click here for my article in last week's letter. This is one of those short and sweet kind of rides. Just show up with a toy and parade down 19th ave. All the streets are blocked off and crowds of people and kids on the side of the road waving. It's a good time to get out early and kick off the Christmas season with a group of your friends, or new friends you haven't even met yet. This ride is just a special day for everyone. Sign in is from 8-10am located at the F.O.P. lodge at 19th Ave. and Sweetwater in Phoenix. Parade leaves at 10:00am on a new route this year. We will be heading down 19th Ave. to Buckeye Rd. East on Buckeye to 7th Ave. North on 7th Ave. to Elks Lodge #477 at 1012 S. 7th Ave. Here there will be cookies and cider after you deposit your toys. Come on out and bring your kids and friends. Extras

I have had a lot of emails asking me: Where do the toys go when you drop them off at the toy runs? That is something that I have always wondered as well. So I thought I would go to W. Steven Martin, the king of toy collections and see what he did with them. I called him with my questions and he invited me down to the toy warehouse to see the entire operation. I thought this would be a good time to share this information with everyone, so I took the Mini DV and filmed the tour. I have to admit, I was expecting a few large boxes with toys that the Police would look through to give to needy families. Boy, was I wrong. What I found was a 4000 sq. ft. warehouse filled with toys and set up like a Toys R Us. It was truly amazing the operation that they have there. I also learned that over 800 police officers around the state use this Toy Warehouse to give toys to their adopted families. I have produced a 7 minute video that shows W. Steven taking us through the Toy Warehouse and explaining everything that happens with the toys and the money that is donated. I think you will find it extremely interesting. I have it formatted for both Hi Speed and 56K dialup access. It will take about 10 minutes for the 56K to download, but it will be worth your time for what you will learn about this process. Click Here To See The Videos.

Video Tips. If you have clicked on some of my recent videos and you got sound and no video, or it didn't play at all, it might be because you need the newest Windows Media Player. CLICK HERE to download that new player. If you right mouse click on a video while it is playing, you can adjust the size of the video on the screen.

I added 2 new original video's last week. I took some pictures from the Patriot Parade and put the music of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA" to it. The video is 3:18 long and is available for Hi Speed and 56K.  I also took some bike photos and put them to the music of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way". Take a look at them, I think you will enjoy. The links are on the front page of www.cyclerides.com .

As I have mentioned before, the amount of Cox internet and broadband users are growing by the week. Most people don't realize that in most instances it costs only another $10-$15 per month to have the cable modem service. You drop the dialup service that you are paying $20 per month for and cable costs between $30-$35. It makes videos play like a television. Check back often to www.cyclerides.com for new video additions. Eventually I plan to take video from our trip to California and edit that down to some video for the site.

As for me this weekend, we will just be staying close to home and enjoying some relaxation time with the family. We wish you all a safe and blessed Thanksgiving.

Until Next Week,
Blessings and Safe Riding To All,

Barry Caraway
