Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
Well, It was a weekend with no riding for me. Even though there were 2 good rides this past weekend Mrs. Cyclerides and I were set up inside the Civic Center both days greeting the riders that attended the 1st Annual Motorcycle Expo. We want to say Thank You to all who stopped by the booth and said Hi. We appreciate it very much. For a first year event this really went very well. There were over 100 vendors with everything from go peds to $100,000 motorcycles to flying machines. I think it was a job well done by the organizers of this event and look forward to it expanding and bringing in even more national names. We need something like this as an annual indoor event. If you didn't get to the show, here is a panorama of the show from the top of the Drag Specialties 18 wheeler. Click Here. I mentioned that there were some flying machines there. I've always had an interest in flying. I think I mentioned my helicopter flying experience about a year ago. My next adventure is probably going to be flying a powered paraglider. At least you don't have to worry about a car pulling out in front of you. Given my interest in aviation, I was riding by Scottsdale Airport yesterday and took this cool picture.
This is the time of year for rides and we have had no shortage of them so far. But there is one ride every year that I really look forward to that I want to give a special highlight. It is the Kicks For Kids Toy Run sponsored by Just Friends M/A and The Army Reserve NCO Council. The ride has been going for 20 years and has built quite a loyal following. I first got involved with them 3 years ago when I started Cyclerides.com. They were doing around 1000 bikes per year for the previous several years. But with the support of Cyclerides.com readers they have doubled the last 2 years and had over 4000 bikes last year. They had to bring in extra trucks just to receive all of the toys. I expect even more this year.
Why is this such a special event? It's hard for me to put into words, but I think it is because of the innocence of the event. There is no cost for the ride, no expectations, no sign in, no agenda. Just show up with a toy strapped on your bike and join in with all of the other riders that are there for the same reason. To have fun, give a little and enjoy the Christmas season. At a time of year when life gets busy and the pressure starts to build, this is a moment that you can just take a few hours off with your scooter, take a short ride and forget all about it. The mood that is created with this ride is really hard to describe. It is really kind of magical. Everyone is just so totally relaxed, happy to be there, walking around finding old friends or just viewing the decorations on the bikes. A lot of riders show up early to have a cup of coffee or donuts and bring their kids on the back to enjoy the day as well.
Not only are the riders involved, but the spectators are growing in numbers too. You will see hundreds, if not thousands of people standing on the side of the road with video cameras, still cameras or just waving at the riders. Churches along the route actually let out to see all of the decorated bikes riding by. A tradition that has really gotten going in the last couple of years is the riders throwing beads, Christmas candy, or trinkets to the kids watching the parade. They just go nuts when the candy or beads come flying. And once we get to the end of the route everyone takes the toys off of their bikes and hands them to a National Guardsman to put into an armory truck to be delivered to the less fortunate kids for Christmas. After that you can enjoy some cookies and apple cider for refreshments. It is so neat for something this simple to be such a special and well liked event. In my opinion, this is really the can't miss ride of the year.
Due to the amount of riders that are expected, I contacted the organizers and suggested that they get 19th Ave. closed down for a while so that the bikes could stage right on the street. This would alleviate a lot of problems with finding a place for all the bikes. They are checking into that and are hopeful this can happen. The route has changed this year. We will ride 19th ave. down to Buckeye. Turn East to 7th Ave. and then North to the Elks Lodge at 1012 S. 7th Ave. There will be prizes given for the best decorated bikes. Collector Pins will be available for sale at the ride for $3.00 each. To take a look at last years bikes and people that were decorated click the following link.
http://www.cycleridesusa.com/ridephotos/kickskids2001/ . I look forward to seeing everyone there. I will be doing photos as well as a video presentation of the ride.
