Update
9/28/11
Greetings Riders,
Well, we are just a couple of ticks of the calendar away from
October and that means lots of charity rides on the calendar and hopefully some
cooler weather. The heat has been hanging on but the Cyclerides.com Bike Nights
are in full swing with night 3 of 10 coming this week featuring 70’s theme
night. We will have 70’s era classic cars and
Big D’s Mobile DJ’s spinning tunes from
the 70’s at Westgate and Mesa Riverview. Rumor has it there might even be a
disco ball. So whether it is 3 Dog Night, Foreigner or Stayin’ Alive that you
like, you will hear it all on these nights. Get the bike out and come join us
this Thursday and Friday nights at the
Cyclerides.com
Westgate Bike Night and
Mesa
Riverview Bike Night.
Don’t miss next week at both places, it is going to be
Monster Truck Theme Night!
2011 Ride Day 6
Cooke City, MT to Jackson, WY
Featuring Yellowstone National Park and Grand
Teton National Park
Last week I left you after crossing the Beartooth Pass and ending the day
in Cooke City, MT.
If you missed that report Click Here to
read and view the pictures of Beartooth Pass.
This week we will be going from Cooke City, MT to Jackson, WY.
At dinner in Cooke City some other travelers that we met mentioned that we might be able to see some wildlife about 3 miles East
of where we staying. Our big desire was to see a Moose this year since that is
the only major wildlife that we had not seen in all these years of riding. The
locals had all told us this is Moose territory and if we got up early we would
probably see one. In fact, there is even a motel called Big Moose Resort. We
both figured if we were even going to see a Moose, this would be the area. So we
got up at the crack of dawn to head out on the bikes to score a Moose sighting.
Sounded good on paper, but as we all know when you want to see something that
bad and go out of your way to do it, chances are the Moose are going to keep you
guessing and that was the case on this outing. We saw one deer grabbing some
breakfast in the trees and that was it. The Moose sighting was going to have to
wait. Not even Big Moose Resort could produce their namesake in the meadow.
So we went back to the motel to eat breakfast, lament the lack of a Moose
sighting and get packed up for our ride this day which was going to
take us 175 scenic miles through Yellowstone National Park to Jackson, WY. The
NE entrance to Yellowstone is only about 6 miles from Cooke City, which is why
there are so many motels in the middle of nowhere. We got gassed up and had
ridden about 3 miles West toward the park when out of the corner of my eye I see
something big moving on the side of the road. I hit the brakes and looked to my
left to see, wait for it. . . yep, a moose walking down the side of the road the
same direction we were going. I alerted Mrs. C. that there was a Moose and that
we would turn around to get a good look at it.
I was so excited to see a Moose that didn’t have a
flying squirrel
with goggles next to it that I about dumped my bike trying to do a u-turn
and get a picture of it.
When I turned around she ducked into some
trees next to the road to grab a snack while trying to throw me off the
trail. There was a small meadow right next to the trees that I thought she might
go to, so I broke a stick that was laying on the ground which made her wander
out into the meadow where I got a great shot of our first Moose. Click Here to view. By this
time, there were half a dozen cars that had stopped to do the same. After a few
pics and watching her eat some grass, we were back on our way to the Northeast
Yellowstone entrance.
It was that time of year to renew my annual National Park pass, so I paid
my $80 that will get both of us on our bikes into all of the national parks and
monuments for the next year. This is a great deal if you plan to do
more than 2 or 3 parks per year as it would have cost us $40 just for this park.
The Northeast entrance was the only entrance to Yellowstone that we had not been
through, so now I can check that off the list. It is about a 30 mile ride from
the NE entrance to Tower Junction that will take you through the Lamar Valley as
you ride along side the Lamar River while looking at several 10,000 foot peaks
in the distance. It is likely that you will see some wildlife in the Lamar
Valley area, most likely Buffalo. When you reach Tower Junction there is a gas
station and the Roosevelt Lodge and Cabins.
We turned South and rode 19 miles to Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone for
our next stop.
Along this route you will pass Tower Fall, view
Mount Washburn and go over Dunraven Pass before reaching Canyon Village. The Grand
Canyon of Yellowstone is definitely worth the stop. In fact, it is
one of my favorite places in the Park. There is a loop off of the main route
that will take you to overlooks for the Upper
Falls and Lower Falls with a view
of the canyon. These falls are outstanding and well worth the
effort to see them. From there we continued South 59 miles past Yellowstone Lake
and on to the South Entrance.
Leaving the South Entrance of Yellowstone takes you right into the Grand
Teton National Park on your way to Jackson, WY and past the Grand Tetons.
This is a really nice ride as you make your way to the Grand Tetons that
you will soon see in the distance. You will travel 24 miles where you will see
the huge Jackson Lake on your right. The best way to see the Tetons up close is
to turn right at Jackson Lake Junction, which is also known as Teton Park Road.
This will take you on a 20 mile ride that is nothing less than spectacular.
The mammoth 13,000 foot Teton range is stunning and seems to go on forever.
Be sure to turn right into the North Jenny Lake junction to stop at Jenny
Lake. This is one of the
prettiest
settings for a lake and mountain that you might ever see.
Absolutely stunning in my opinion. You will then exit South Jenny Lake junction
and be back on the Teton Park Rd. again which will take you to the Moose
Junction. At Moose junction you will see a sign to Dornan’s. Turn into there for
food and gas. They have a great restaurant with an outdoor upper deck and beautiful view of
the Tetons. I would recommend a stop there. From Moose Junction and Dornan’s you
can either continue on Hwy. 191 direct to Jackson or take the Moose Wilson Road
to Teton Village and the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. There is where you can
take the Aerial Tramway to the ski mountain. This road will then bring you in
from the South of Jackson.
Jackson is a beautiful little town with an abundance of shopping,
restaurants, motels, hotels and bed and breakfasts to choose from. One
stop that most bikers frequent is the Million
Dollar Cowboy Bar and Cadillac Restaurant. These are right in the
center of town. In the summer months you will always see bikes parked in front.
Click Here for a great 360
degree picture on their web site. We love Jackson and have stayed there 3 times
now. You could easily make that your home base and do day trips out of there for
3 days.
And if you are inclined, you can go see what is known as the “most
photographed barn in America”.
This is an old barn that has the
Grand Tetons in the background that Ansel Adams photographed in the 1950’s.
Since then photographers have come from all over the world to snap a picture of
the old Moulton Ranch Barn. Here is ours. I was told if you go there
early in the morning there will be several photographers lined up waiting
for the perfect shot. We happened to be there mid afternoon and there were still
people stopping to get a shot of it. It is located just 3.5 miles North of the
Moose junction off of Antelope Flats Road in the Mormon Row Historic District.
You can’t miss it. (Google Map to
barn.) Wikipedia about the
Moulton Barn.
This route from Cooke City, MT to Jackson, WY could be one of the most
power packed 175 miles of scenery that I can remember ever riding. There is so much to see and tickle the senses on this route that you can
barely process it all before the end of the day. And if you get lucky and see a
moose up close, it puts it over the top. If you haven’t made it to Jackson, WY
and the area around there, I would put it on your list of places to ride for
sure.
Next week I will conclude our 2011 ride taking us from
Jackson, WY to Phoenix via Hwy. 12 in Utah.

Tidbits and Updates:
**You probably heard that there was gunfire again
between 2
motorcycle clubs at the Reno Street Vibrations rally this past weekend. The
rumor is that this will lead to a “no colors” rule at the casinos in Las Vegas
this weekend for the Las Vegas Bikefest. Click Here to read the story.
**The new bike build is getting closer to being out of the fabrication
process.
It is turning out to be pretty cool for sure. The rear
lights have been a tough one for me to figure out. Everything else is custom on
this bike, so I just couldn’t slap on some LED strips in the bag fillers and
call it good. So we took the old blinkers from the front and molded them into
the bags with some exposed on the side and then molding toward the front of the
bag. Very retro and fits with my Corvette theme really well. Hope to be to the
painter by the end of next week. Click
