it is the middle of March and that means at least 3 things will soon be
happening over the next couple of weeks. March Madness for college
basketball, Bike Nights beginning and Arizona Bike Week. It is a busy
and exciting time of year here in the Valley as the weather will soon
be prime, and welcomed for riding after a bit of a funky winter that we
had here. Every year about this time it gets pretty exciting as we are
all ready to get out and start enjoying our bikes and the great temps
As most of you know from last weeks letter, Cyclerides.com Bike Nights
will begin at High Street on Thursday, March 21st followed by Westgate
on March 28th to get the bike night season kicked off. More details on
that later. But that is not the only project that I am working on right
now. Last Fall the owner of Loess Hills HD in Pacific Junction, Iowa
called me and asked if I would be interested in helping the put on a
big event at their dealership in Iowa that is located about 20 miles
South of Omaha. That is typically not something that I would have
entertained, but since I was not going to be working on Phoenix
Bikefest, I thought it would be fun to do something like that. So I
accepted the challenge and am working on the Rally In The Hills for the
Loess Hills Harley-Davidson dealership.
It is going to be a fun event that for me is a mini Phoenix Bikefest as
we are constructing a Ride Through Bar just like we had at PBF. Along
with that we will have the Globe of Death, Dyno Drags, Bike Show and
other activities. So while this has been a little out of my normal
scope of doing events here in the Phoenix area, it has been fun to try
and spread some of the cool things we get to do here to riders in other
parts of the country. It will be fun to see them enjoying the Ride
Through Bar just as we did here. If you are in the area, plan to stop
by and say hi May 3-5. Click Here for details.
Weather and politics seem to own the news cycles these days and the buzz these
last few weeks have been the weather across the midwest with all of the
snow and cold. I had the chance to witness part of that myself this
week while on a visit to Loess Hills HD Monday and Tuesday. As I flew
into Omaha, NE on Monday I looked out the window and the ground was
white as FAR as I could see. Click Here. When I got my rental truck and started driving past my first 4 foot mound of snow,
it really took my mind on a visit back in time to when I grew up in
Kansas. It was just how I remembered it back then as the graders would
come along the country roads and leave huge mounds of snow
along the road after a snow storm. When I got to the dealership I
couldn't resist throwing a few snowballs and taking this Photo Op in
front of a huge mound of snow.

I have lived in
Phoenix for almost 38 years after moving from Kansas and I think I have
only touched snow maybe 4 times since. Back then it was fine, because
that was all I knew. It was just a way of life. I
enjoyed reliving the memories of those days, but I don't miss the
inconvenience of having to deal with the cold and snow one bit. God
Bless all of those that are going through this in the Midwest right
now. It has to be tough.
When people from home ask me how I deal with the heat here in Phoenix,
my answer is this. I don't have to shovel it, scrape it off of my
windshield, and my car starts every time I get in it. Maybe it is a
product of living in a warm climate for so long, but when I get
severely cold, it takes me hours to get warm again. But when I get hot,
I can cool down in 10 minutes. And when I saw a bunch of motorcycles
being stored with battery tenders on them at Loess Hills HD for the
winter, it reminded me how good we have it here. I am fine with making
short visits in that type of weather, but I'm happy to call the desert
home now. And it looks like I got out of there just in time before the heavy winds and flooding began yesterday.
