This is a letter from Lt. Dave Trombi of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office to all motorcyclists that travel through Carefreee, AZ.
As some of you may have heard by now, there is a Sound Ordinance in the town of
Carefree. As one of the ranking commanders in the district, I wanted to take a moment to provide you with some
facts about this new ordinance so that we may avoid speculation. As you have heard said many times, this ordinance
is not directed solely at motorcycles. It encompasses all noise that is emitted from any motor vehicle while on
the roadway within the town limits. The intention of the ordinance is to provide the citizens of Carefree with
a quiet environment. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, under the leadership of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, is dedicated
to providing all citizens in Maricopa County with the best in law enforcement services. This includes each and
every one of you.
If you read the ordinance you will see that 85 dBA is the maximum allowance. During the first 60 days we will stop
and educate those vehicles that are not in compliance. It is our goal to get the word out to all of those who visit
Carefree about the sound restrictions, not to cite everyone we can. For motorcyclists we ask that you choose the
proper gear and take it easy on the throttle. I have been told that a motorcycle that would not normally be in
compliance could be, provided that the operator exercise proper gear and throttle control. In other words, please
take it easy.
We would like everyone's cooperation in this matter and I anticipate that there will not be a negative impact on
the business community of Carefree or Cave Creek. The town of Jerome, Arizona has had success with this same ordinance
and has noticed no loss of business. We wish to avoid heavy enforcement. In place of this we are looking for a
working relationship. Those who choose not to be compliant after 60 days will receive citations. The fine schedule
is substantial. Please help us to avoid this situation. Thank you.
Respectfully,
Lt. Dave Trombi
Maricopa County Sheriff's Office
