Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
9/22/04

Greetings Riders,

As advertised in last week's letter, the weather is really starting to get nice for riding, especially in the early evening.
I went out at sunset last night for a putt around our area and it was fantastic. There are 17 charity rides on the October calendar now with a wide variety of benefactors, plus bike nights for you to get out and enjoy the evening weather on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday's with more to come soon.

Last weekend we decided to make a quick trip up to Las Vegas for the Bikefest to look at the vendors and recruit some Custom Motorcycles for the Best of the Southwest event with OCC in November.
Since this was more work than pleasure we decided to fly up since we didn't anticipate there would be much time to ride. I took the 8:00am flight Friday morning with our overnight bag so that Mrs. C. could just hop on the 2:00pm flight straight from her meeting. I got to the airport in what I thought was plenty of time, but the new security measures must be kicking in and the line was at least 100 people long. So as I am making my way back and forth in the serpentine line, eyeing up the same people every 50 feet as I make the turns East and then West, I start to notice that what I thought was ample time to make the flight was now becoming closer with each turn in the line.

I finally made it to the front of the line with ID and boarding pass in hand with a 2 minute walk to the gate in front of me and 20 minutes to spare.
That's when the interesting part began. The lady looked at my boarding pass and yells out "Select!" and said, step over here sir. I thought, Cool! They know I'm running late and they selected me to go right through. Not! It was more like, "Oh No, I've been profiled", they know I'm a biker. A minute later a guy comes over and said come with me. Without offering any explanation he asked me to sit in the chair, take off my shoes and socks and raise my legs. So now I am sitting there with nothing in my pockets, stripped down to my bare feet with my legs in the air and watching the other passengers go by while this guy examines the bottom of my feet. Now I know what it must be like to go to the gynecologist. Knowing that a pedicure wasn't in the cards, he must have been looking to see if anything was taped to the bottom of my feet. He then has me stand up with my feet in those little chalk foot drawings on the floor and proceeds to wand me in places that I didn't even know you could hide things. At this point I am pretty much feeling like an idiot. Then he takes me over to another man who is standing there with a smile on his face  wearing rubber gloves. I thought, OH NO! A proctologist moonlighting as a TSA agent. I'll walk to Vegas! But he just asked if he could go through my overnight bag.

This is precisely the time that I realized that I was also carrying Mrs. C's clothes and undergarments in MY bag.
As he is unzipping the bag he asks if I am traveling alone and I said yes. As he gets to Mrs. C's part of the bag he asks me where I was going. I said to the Las Vegas Bikefest. He looked at me, smiled and responds, Oh, Really! Now I am turning 3 shades of red imagining that this guy thinks I am some cross dressing biker from Phoenix heading to Las Vegas for a little alter ego fun on the strip. So... wanting to clear things up right there, I said, my wife is meeting me in Vegas later this afternoon, I am just carrying the bag for us. He smiled and said, Uh Huh, well HAVE a good time. Now after being thoroughly searched from head to toe, sat in a chair with my bare feet up in the air and being labeled a cross dresser, I felt fully emasculated and now had 10 minutes to spare to catch my plane.

From what I found out later,
my boarding pass was flagged with a checkerboard at the bottom when I got it out of the ticketless travel terminal. The fact that I was traveling alone on a one way ticket (with Women's panties in my bag and a fear of Men with rubber gloves) is part of the profile that they are looking for to be what is called a "select" passenger. The moral of this story is, don't put anything in your bag that you wouldn't want a total stranger to see, rummage through, and put their hands on. They are very thorough.

FYI, the Las Vegas Bikefest was very well done and very well attended.
We were able to talk to a lot of good vendors and got commitments from awesome bike builders to enter the Best of the Southwest show here November 5-7.
