Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
8/13/03

Greetings Riders,

Well, I've found a way to extend tire wear on a motorcycle. Actually, Mother Nature has. Just throw in a couple of record high days of 115 plus on the weekends and tires will last indefinitely because you won't see many motorcycles on the road. And the ones that are out there are high tailing it home before noon if possible. As I mentioned last I like to segment this brutal part of the Phoenix Summer. September 1st is my window to see the great riding weather that is to be ours for the next several months. So there is only 18 more days to go before the motorcycle world will awaken once again here in the Valley.

And the first ride that everyone will be out for is the Patriot Ride that is coming up on Sunday, September 7th. I have all the details below in the letter. The end of the ride this year will be on the Mezzanine of Bank One Ballpark for the ceremonies. Streets will be blocked off around Bank One for motorcycle parking and all the restaurants in the area will be open with food and entertainment. So wear your Patriotic gear, bring out the flags and make it a fun day.

Many of you have dogs and know what is involved in taking care of them. It is a lot like a motorcycle in that you have scheduled intervals of maintenance. One of those maintenance items for a dog is a trip to the Vet every year for a 5,000 bark service. You know the deal, the 5 point check of the gums, ears, eyes, paws and the lubing of the thermometer for that embarrassing check of their temperature. A couple of weeks ago our dog was about 2000 barks overdue for his trip to the vet. So I get his Harley collar on with the matching Harley leash and start with the story about going to dog park. If I actually said we're going to the vet his feet would still be firmly planted in the concrete.

Since I am an avid rider, my first option for a mode of transportation is always the motorcycle. So as I'm standing in the garage with the dog all geared up and ready to go, I'm trying to figure out how I can get him to sit on the back of the seat while we ride to the vet, and neither one of us gets hurt. I mean after all, he is probably going to have his head sticking out of the car window catching some wind anyway. Why not do it on a bike? He appeared to be game, but since I don't have a sidecar or a Goldwing to strap him in, I decided that it would probably be best for both of us to just take the car.

So off we go in the car with his head sticking out of the window, his tongue and ears flapping in the breeze. It's amazing how intuitive dogs really are. It's like the veterinarian building has some beacon on the roof that only dogs can decipher that says: "Beware, you are entering the Vet Zone. Do not obey your master and act like you can't walk. There is a man inside with rubber gloves on that will insist on taking your temperature." I can sort of feel his anxiety. I'm the one that has to continue the small talk with the vet for 2 minutes while watching a thermometer sticking out of my dogs rear end, saying things like: "Hey Doc, how bout' those D-Backs?"

So I get him out of the car and head for the front door. The closer we get, the tighter the leash becomes and the toenails are beginning to scrape on the concrete. I'm starting to think I am either going to have to pick him up or walk in with a leash attached to a neck and head. We finally get to the front door and I see about 6 other people in the waiting room with their dogs. Knowing that dogs never look each other in the eyes when they say Hello, I opened the door and said to myself: "Let the sniffing begin!" As I surveyed the room I saw a little white poodle sitting on the leg of an older lady. About that time, my dog apparently spotted the French booty as well. He broke away, ran over and put his nose right into the crotch of....the little old lady. Everyone in the place saw it and didn't know whether to laugh or gasp. Of course, being thoroughly embarrassed by the ill placed nose of my canine, I immediately tried to lighten the mood by saying: "Are you sure you aren't sitting on a Milk Bone? He really likes those".

After apologizing, I took a seat far from the French Poodle and her still smiling owner. We waited for our turn and got a clean bill of health and our new registration. My over friendly dog is now good for another year and 10,000 barks. But I still need to find a way to get him to ride on the motorcycle.

Upcoming Events

Sunday, September 7th
9-11 Patriot Parade 2003.
Many of you were on this ride last year to make it one of the biggest in the state.
The Patriot Parade is back this year bigger and better than ever. This year the ride is on Sunday, September 7th to accommodate the crowd and make blocking the freeways and streets easier. The ride is to be shown live in New York City. The first 5,000 to sign in will get a bracelet of one of the fallen in the 9-11 attack or one of the fallen heroes in the war on terrorism. W. Steven Martin has worked hard to make this one of the most exciting rides ever. The ride will start at the Gila River Casino/Wild Horse Pass located at I-10 and Exit 162A (Maricopa Rd.) with registration beginning at 8am. Food and beverage will be available at the start of the ride.
The fully escorted ride will leave at 11:00am and end in downtown Phoenix at The Bank One Ballpark for a ceremony and a time to honor our fallen soldiers and victims of 9-11.

The streets around Bank One Ballpark including Jackson St. will be blocked off for parking and the Restaurants in the area are going to be open to serve you. The donation is $10 per person paid at the start. T-Shirts and ride pins will also be sold at the event. You might ask why is it on the 7th instead of the 11th? It is so that the ride can accommodate more riders and that the logistics of blocking major highways on a Sunday is easier to do. Plus, the ride this year is going to be televised live in New York City. See you there. I will have more details as we get closer to the event.

It's now time to give Kudos to our Governor. I'm sure you have all heard about the controversy over the monument of the 10 Commandments that has been at the capital for 40 years without any opposition. I guess the ACLU was running short on REAL issues to deal with so they decided to pick on this one. Last week our Governor weighed in with her opinion on this subject.

The Governor does not believe that this monument in this location, constitutes government endorsement of religion. She also believes there are a host of more pressing problems before us, including education funding and forest health. The monument has been around for nearly 40 years, and the Governor will not ask DOA or the Legislative Mall Commission to remove it.”

The Director’s Office has received over 950 telephone calls in support of retaining the monument in
Wesley Bolin Plaza and only 4 opposed. Once again, it doesn't look like the ACLU is working for the majority! Maybe we should put them out there thinning the forests.

And now for the Quote of the Week from our Sheriff Joe Arpaio:
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city, is not sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and the soldiers are living in tents and they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths."

As for me, Mrs. C. and I are going to try and stay cool, while still getting out on the bike. Stay tuned to the Newsletter and www.cyclerides.com for some exciting new things that we have planned for the rest of this year. If you know of anyone that would want to be kept up to date via the Newsletter have them email info@cyclerides.com and put newsletter in the Subject column.

Until Next Week,
Blessings and Safe Riding To All,
