Weekly Update

Greetings Riders,
Well, here we are, July 4th, 2003 is behind us. For those of us that live in the area it means that we are now looking forward to the Dog Days of a Phoenix Summer. For those of you that are new to the area that means that extremely hot weather and Monsoon's are right around the corner. I've lived here for 22 years and love the Phoenix area and Arizona. But I still dread the months of July and August. I have no problem with the heat up to about 105, in fact, being from Kansas, I prefer the hot dry weather over cold any day. But the thought of being on a motorcycle in 116 degree temperature on what seems to be 1000 degree asphalt doesn't really excite me. And while the monsoon storms are fun to watch from afar, being in one on a motorcycle is way less than desirable.
So you are new to the area and you are thinking this stinks, I live in this beautiful area and I can't even ride my motorcycle. That's not necessarily true. What do you do if you are an avid rider like I am and you don't want to let your motorcycle sit for 2 months? What you need to do is break down your riding day into segments. Even in the hottest of days it doesn't hit much over 100 degrees before Noon, that is still a decent riding temperature. If you are riding after noon, just make sure you have a good destination with excellent outdoor mist system or air conditioning that won't take you very long to get to. The Hideaway in Cave Creek, Sugar Daddy's and The Billet Bar all have excellent outdoor cooling systems. And in the evenings the sun is down and it is usually excellent riding weather. Even last night after a hot day it was 85 degrees in the evening. So if you are planning a ride out of the area just plan it that you are leaving early and returning before noon or returning to the Valley late.
So for those of you that are like me and are going to ride no matter what and want a quick little morning ride I have one for you. I hadn't been out here for a long time and forgot how enjoyable of a ride this is. Many of you have done this before but it is certainly worth highlighting for a way to get out of town and to a little higher elevation without spending an entire day doing it.
I am calling it the Bartlett Lake Day Ride. But it is actually more of a Half Day Ride. Depending on where you live in the Valley it can vary in distance and is easily accessible from loop 101. For me at about I-17 and the 101 it was 113 miles roundtrip. If you are looking for something quick, scenic and fun to ride this is the one for you. Bartlett Lake is located about 20 miles East of Carefree in the Tonto National Forest. You just go 5 miles East of Pima Rd. on Cave Creek Rd. and then take Bartlett Dam Rd. 14 miles to the lake. It is a very fun ride that will take you as high as 3200 feet in elevation while meandering through the desert twisties and rolling hills before dropping down to the lake. Once you get in sight of the lake you will experience some beautiful desert saguaros, mountain vistas and lake views. After you make it to the lake you can turn left on the road to Bartlett Flats that will take you 3 3/4 miles through some beautiful scenery to the lakes edge or turn right that will take you to the Marina. On the weekends you can go to the Concession trailer that will let you into the Marina area for food and drink.
Once you come back from the lake to Cave Creek Rd. you can turn right and follow this road another 5 miles until it turns into gravel. This was truly the surprise of the trip for me as this road is full of 15 mph switchbacks hills and turns. It is well worth the ride back there. On the way you can even stop at the Sears-Kay Ruin. This was built 900 years ago by the Hohokam Indians. If you are inclined to take a little hike, there is a 1 mile loop trail that leads to the top and through this ancient fortified village. Signs tell about the ruin and the lives of those who built it.
I'm sure you would enjoy this nice little morning or late evening getaway. On the way back home stop at The Hideaway on Cave Creek Rd. for Lunch or refreshments. Click Here for the full details of the ride including pictures of the area, text and map. As always, take plenty of water and sunscreen with you this time of year.

Upcoming Events

September 11th - 14th
The 3rd Annual Las Vegas Bikefest
For the last 2 years this has been one of my favorite events. It is held in downtown Las Vegas without the hotel gauging rates associated with other runs in the State of Nevada. And this year the Vendor area has been moved to the air conditioned Cashman Center. As always there will be the Friday night party and bike parking on the outdoor mall under the Fremont Street Experience with the music of Blue Oyster Cult and Steppenwolf. There will be the always high quality Custom Bike Show, Mr. and Mrs. Las Vegas Bikefest competitions, a $10,000 Poker Run, Poker Walk, Tatoo Contest and all of the fun associated with Las Vegas. And of course cruising the Las Vegas Strip. If you are planning on going you'd better make hotel reservations now. 2 hotels have already sold out. They are expecting over 20,000 riders to attend this year. Click here for more information and to register.

OK, this one is a hoot. Have you ever wondered why we were able to march into Baghdad with so little resistance? Or why Palestinians throw rocks? This might clear it up for you. This is a 2 mb Quicktime Movie. Click the pause button when the player comes up and let it fully download. Turn up your sound, click the play button and watch it, then watch it again while you are still laughing. Click Here.
The attached text is supposedly what Rush Limbaugh talked about on his radio show. I don't want to make this a political forum, so I am not going to endorse or refute what he has said here, but it is definitely some food for thought as we compensate people in our country. Take a look and see what you think.
Need an excuse to ride your motorcycle to work? Wednesday, July 16th is the 12th Annual National Ride To Work Day. Why is there a ride to work day? This day was organized to demonstrate:
* The number of motorcyclists to the general public and to politicians.
* That motorcyclists are from all occupations and all walks of life.
* That motorcyclists can reduce traffic and parking congestion in large cities.
* That motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation.
* That motorcycling is a social good.
