Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
Well, the in-laws are now in town to take care of the house and pets, and by the time you read this, Mrs. C. and I will be somewhere in the friendly skies heading for the Northwest to be re-united with the new Road Glide and begin our road trip 2005. Once again we are shipping the bike to Downtown Harley-Davidson in Tukwila, (Seattle) Washington to start our trip. With only 8 days to get our ride in this year, shipping the bike to a starting point near where you actually want to ride is a good way to maximize your available riding days. And from what I can tell by my preliminary route planning, we are going to need all 8 days of riding to take it all in. It is only around 2300 miles, but a lot of eye candy and things to see and experience along the way. I wish we had a couple of weeks to really take advantage of all the sights.
As most of you know that have taken long motorcycle trips, it is hard to make lodging reservations because you really don't know how far you are going to get in a given day. It is not like traveling in a car. Because in a car, you are traveling to an activity. When I am traveling on a motorcycle, my activity is riding the bike. So I want to ride as long as I can and see all I can as long as there is daylight. I really don't want to be constrained by the fact that I have to stop in a certain city just because I have a motel reservation. I might get there early and there could be 4 more good hours of riding out there! Last year we made the entire 10 days with only one reservation for our first night in Whistler, BC.
Part of the enjoyment of cross country riding on a motorcycle is leaving behind all of the schedules and things that you HAVE to do. I just love to start riding in the morning and stop where ever we want in the early evening hours. That is total freedom. This year I am finding out that things are a little different due to the area that we are going to visit. The first 2 nights of Seattle and Coeur D' Alene are not a problem. But after that it gets a little interesting. We are apparently going to an area that is in "peak" tourist season and has few rooms. And combined with that, we picked the weekend to go to the Kalispell/Whitefish area when they are having the big Glacier Park International Air Show. Every hotel room in the area is sold out this weekend. After 20 phone calls to hotels I finally found a room at the ski lodge outside of Whitefish and grabbed it for 2 nights. And as I found out, the same is true for Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. So with 4 nights of reservations now logged, I'm starting to feeling a little too structured for my liking.
But as it turns out, the mileages between stops work out pretty good as far as logical places to stop, and who knows, maybe even an active person like myself can find time to just sit, enjoy the weather, enjoy the scenery and relax for a few minutes without always being on the go. Naaaah! Sounds good on paper, but I enjoy riding so much, after a few minutes of that I'll probably turn to Mrs. C. and say, "That was nice, are you ready to go?" I'm sure a few of you are the same way.
We are going to a beautiful part of the country. Everything I have heard about Montana and Glacier National Park and the Grand Tetons is that it is phenomenal. I can't wait to roll through those areas with the camera clicking like crazy and be able to bring you some great pictures of the area. I even added an additional 1 GB compact flash card today to make sure I had plenty of room for pictures.
For those of you that want to follow along, the itinerary looks like this: Day 1 (Thursday, July 28) Hwy 20 and the top part of the Cascade Loop in Washington ending in Coeur D' Alene. Day 2 to Whitefish, Mt. Day 3 the loop around Glacier National Park and back to Whitefish. Day 4 to the South part of Montana just above Yellowstone National Park. Day 5 Yellowstone National Park to end in Jackson, WY. Day 6 to somewhere in Utah. Day 7 Bryce Canyon National Park and beyond. Day 8 back to Phoenix. As you can see, the last few days are a little sketchy. If we run out of time, we'll just catch an Interstate and book it home. But our Daughter is returning from 2 months in Chile on the following Saturday, so we will definitely be back to pick her up.
I look forward to sharing all of this with you when we return.
Thanks to all of you that shared ideas with me for the trip. I apologize if I did
not reply to you yet, but I appreciate your input.

You might have seen an email going around about ICE. That is an acronym for In Case of Emergency. A useful thing to add to your mobile address
book! It was thought up by an ambulance man/paramedic who found that when they went to the scenes of accidents
there were always mobile phones but they didn't know which numbers to call and he thought that it would be
a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name to file "next of kin" under. The idea is
that you store the word " I C E " in your mobile phone Address book, and next to it enter the
number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation
ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact
them!. Sounds like a good idea for everyone to do. Here is a link to the "truth or fiction"
story about this email.
You might already know that last weekend Harley-Davidson announced their new lineup for the 2006 model year with some exciting changes including a whole wheel to wheel redesign of the Dyna lineup and the hot new CVO Bikes and one super new CVO bagger. You can Click Here for the press release that includes some details on the changes and Click Here for the Harley-Davidson site.
Until Next Week,
Blessings and Safe Riding To All,
