Cyclerides.com Weekly Update

Greetings Riders,

Whew! This has this been a hot one!
Record high temps, a blistering hot sun cranking out 118 degrees and no shade can make it tough to want to get out and take a joy ride on a motorcycle. But for some reason it still hasn't taken away my desire to ride. I'm not sure how hot it has to get to do that. It's really kind of funny, when I am riding and actually see someone else out on a bike, I immediately start making judgments about this person. Things like: "What is wrong with this guy? Doesn't he know it's too hot to ride?" or "What an idiot! Why would he be riding in 118 degree weather?" or "Man, that guy must really like to ride to be out here in this weather!". And then I remember that I'm doing the same thing as this idiot that I am making judgments about. OH NO! I'M THAT GUY! I don't know what there is about it, but if I need to make a quick trip somewhere I will still walk past the car to get on the bike. Just the other day I was going to run an errand and Mrs. C. said, there's the car, why don't you take that? I said why should I when there is a perfectly good bike to ride? It is still a kick to get out on 2 wheels for a little while even in this heat. Like the old saying goes: "If I have to explain it...you wouldn't understand".

Keeping with the theme from last week about segmenting your rides to the desirable parts of the day I have part 2 of last week's short Day Rides. This is also a ride that you can get done in the morning and be back inside before it gets too hot. But this one has a "Twist". An activity you can do when you reach your destination to kick that adrenaline up just one more notch. Harley-Davidson has the "Fly and Ride Program" for members who want to fly someplace and ride. I have found a place that you can "Ride to and Fly". I am calling this one the "Lake Pleasant Ride and Fly ".

My daughter saw that my chrome wish list was getting a little short and she wanted to find something else to get me for my Birthday. She knows I love flying so she purchased a Parasail Ride for me at Lake Pleasant. The timing was perfect as I was just getting ready to do a Day Ride feature for the Lake Pleasant area. So after taking the Parasail Ride I just decided to combine the two and it is the perfect match. Imagine this: Take a nice scenic ride to the lake, park by the dock, get off and walk to the Parasail boat, and 20 minutes later you are suspended 500 to 900 feet above the water in one of the smoothest and quietest rides you will ever have. It is really cool. You and your spouse or girlfriend can go back to back on the same ride or go out as a group and watch everyone from the boat. They put a life jacket on you, a harness and then hook you up to the parasail. The rope is then slowly released and you are airborne. You don't get wet so you can wear whatever you want. The cost is $35 for 500 foot of rope. You can go higher for $10 for each additional 200 feet up to 900 feet. Parasail runs Wed. - Sun. Before or after your ride you can enjoy a breakfast buffet at the Marina from 8:30 - 11:00 am for $6.50. There is a $6.00 fee to enter the Marina gates. Cyclerides V.I.P. Members will receive $5.00 off on the Parasail Ride.

If you want to see what it is like before you go, I did a really neat video taken from 2 different angles and edited them together with music. It turned out great, this is one you will want to see. You will need Windows Media Player 9 to view the video. Click Here For The High Speed Video.  Click Here for the 56K Dialup Video (2.8mb).

Lake Pleasant is located  just 8 miles West of I-17 on Carefree Highway (Hwy 74). It is very easily accessed from most parts of the Valley as Carefree highway is just 10 miles North of the Loop 101 on I-17. You will find 3 different options on this ride. I have the complete maps, directions, pictures of the area and pictures of the parasailing for you on the Day Rides button on www.cyclerides.com or by Clicking Here. This is a fun little ride to get you out of the house and on your bike. I think you will enjoy the ride and the fly.

There is a fellow rider that needs your help. I have gotten a few emails about Mike Cantrell, a retired Mesa PD motor officer that has been diagnosed with Leukemia and needs blood. Here is the text that I received. "A fellow brother "Mike Cantrell" is in desperate need of blood/ bone morrow. He is to sum it up "one of the best people anyone can know". He is a retired Mesa P.D cop and has given back tenfold to his community and those lives he has touched. In a word "LEUKEMIA" has come into play and he is in a fight. United Blood service has set up a "pint for pint" blood draw at any location, just say retired Mesa cop Mike Cantrell, and they will get it to him. He is at Desert Sam and his beautiful wife Debbie and daughter would appreciate any help in the way of blood/bone morrow. An account has also been set up in his name at Bank of America to defray costs. He is an avid rider and the most genuine man I know and he is always in a good mood, the kind of man that is a real friend. He is a fighter. Thanks for the help. The "Choir Boys" are holding a benefit golf tournament for Mike on August 16th at 7:00 am at the View Point Golf Course in Mesa. For more information contact Chris Alonzo at 602-370-6885. It's always nice to put a face to a story. Here are a couple of pics of Mike and his wife.

And now from the "Local boy makes good department". Paul Yaffe Originals will be featured July 22nd on the Travel Channel in a show called Billionaire Secrets. It is supposed to air at 6pm and 9pm PST. Be sure and check your local listings on that night as these times sometimes change. Paul will also be featured on the Discovery Channel on September 1st battling Indian Larry in "Biker Build Off 3". Check local listings for times. See if you can guess who wins.

Ok, Harley riders have been the brunt of a lot of jokes in the past about parts falling off, oil leaks, etc. etc. In fact, I can remember a Gold Wing site that had a flash movie of parts falling off of a Harley. I shared that one with you, so I thought I would share this one. It is a classic. Even a 10 year old can get it.

A 10 year old girl was walking down the street when a big man on a black motorcycle pulls up beside her and says,
Hey little girl, do you want to go for a ride?"
"NO!" says the girl as she keeps on walking.
The motorcycle pulls up beside her again and says,
"Hey kid, I'll give you $10 if you hop on the back".
"NO!" screams the girl and starts running down the street.
The motorcyclist pulls up along side the girl again and says,
"Okay kid, I'll give you $20 and a BIG bag of candy if you'll hop up on the back of my bike and take a ride."
At this point the girl stops, turns to the motorcyclist and screams,
"Look Dad, YOU bought the Honda, so YOU ride it!"

As for me, I have another Ride and Fly in mind that I might be taking this weekend. I'll let you know if it happens. As always, I will have the camera and camcorder along.

Until Next Week,
Blessings and Safe Riding To All,

Barry Caraway
