Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
6/1/05
Greetings Riders,
Well, If you don't have a riding trip planned this weekend, you might be missing a good
opportunity to enjoy some great weather. The forecast is calling for
a high of 92-94 degrees this weekend in Phoenix. That means you will be looking at the low 80's in Sedona and 70
in Flagstaff. Perfect riding weather no matter where you are. Mrs. C. and I will be doing just that and will
bring you a great new Day
Ride next week. I'm looking
forward to getting out and adding some miles while the getting is good.
Now that Summer is here I'm sure a lot of you are planning some out of the State rides.
I know a lot of you go to California for those nice rides up the coast
and to Napa Valley. Whenever we are riding through new areas we try to visit the well known rider stops along the
way. At the end of our Canada trip last year we decided to stop by one of the most famous motorcycle stops in the
West, if not the entire United States. It is known as Ed and Vern's "Rock Store" located
just East of Malibu in Cornell, California near Agoura Hills. If it is not the most famous rider stop, it certainly
has been visited by the most famous people. The Rock Store,
located in the Santa Monica mountains on Mulholland Dr., is a weekly mid day Sunday stop for Jay Leno, a favorite place
for Arnold
Schwarzenegger to eat breakfast on the weekends and Matt
LeBlanc to hang out with a few "Friends".
We rolled into the Rock Store late afternoon on a Saturday expecting to find a throng
of bikes enjoying the afternoon on the patio. Not knowing it was a Sunday
stop, what we found was a couple of bikes out front and Andy, the long time bartender on the side patio
talking to some locals. Andy was a wealth of knowledge
about the Rock Store and was more than happy to fill us in. Ed and Vern moved to Southern
California from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania after WWII. They stumbled across this building, made entirely out of volcanic
rock, which had been a stagecoach stop since 1909. They purchased this "Rock Store", in 1961, and created
a small town grocery store out of it. As the years rolled by, many changes were taking place in this town of Cornell,
CA. As people started flocking to this area, more and more people started taking notice of this small town store.
Not only were carloads of people stopping by for cold refreshments, but motorcyclists began pouring in
from all directions. They were drawn to the canyon roads, and of course the opportunity to really test out
their riding skills.
As more and more people began frequenting this "pit stop," it became a landmark
institution for the avid motorcyclist community. Ed and Vern have built
a reputation for the Rock Store as one of the top tourist destinations, and a hang out for the "who's who"
of the motorcycling world as well as former President Reagan. The Rock Store has been featured in more
than 50 commercials, films, music videos, television productions and magazine photos. Among the attractions at
the Rock Store are the rustic settings, the who's who of celebrity autographed photos
inside, hundreds of bikes of all makes and models to look at and of course the awesome breakfasts, sandwiches and cold refreshments.
So if you are in the Malibu area on the PCH take an awesome ride 14 miles
up Latigo Canyon Rd. to the Rock Store. Or if you on the 101 (Ventura Hwy.) drop down on Kanan Rd. to
Mulholland Hwy. Sunday is the day to go, and on any given Sunday
you can stop by and chat with the celebrities who frequent the Rock Store. You can usually find Jay Leno there before
noon on Sunday. Jay enjoys bringing up any one of his latest "toys" so that everyone can see it. You
can usually find him in the parking lot talking amongst the people. He'll be the first one to show you under the
hood of his new truck, or help someone with repairs on their bike. The Rock Store is a must visit when you
are in the Los Angeles area. Be sure and get there early for some breakfast and to watch the bikes roll in.
The sport bike crowd arrives early and the cruiser crowd rolls in around 11:00am.

Extras
For those of you that have Son's or Daughters that you have sent off to
Iraq, I can't imagine how hard that
must be. The separation alone is bad enough, but the lack of communication and knowing that they are in harms way
must make it even worse. But I did get a small dose of that feeling
this week when our 19 year old Daughter left for a 2 month mission trip to South America. Although she won't be in harms way, seeing your young daughter leave home to go to a
foreign country for 2 months is a bit of a tough thing to adjust to. She will be living with a host family
in Chile while working to help plant new churches, build new churches, work with local churches to set
up vacation bible schools for the kids and work with the children in orphanages to teach them about Christ. Chile
is South of the Equator and it is Winter there now. She doesn't think that she will have hot water where she is
staying and not a lot of heat. Even so, she is anxious to do it and I'm sure it will be a great experience
for her and a blessing to the people that she helps over there. But at home I will be marking off the days
until she returns. I ask for your prayers for her in Chile and for all of our troops that are in harms way.
I have listed this video before called "Coming Home". But it is such a good 60 seconds that I wanted to share it with you again. It is only 1.5
mb so anyone on dialup should be able to view it. Click Here.
Mrs. C. and I will be off to do another Day Ride for the site this weekend. It looks
like we are going to have perfect weather for it. I will have it for you next week.
Until Next Week,
Blessings and Safe Riding To All,
Barry Caraway
