Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
Well, here we are in the first week of May with highs still only in the 80's. This is kind of like sitting in a horror movie like "Halloween 27" when you know Jason is going to pop out from behind a door but you don't know when. We all know the hot weather is soon going to kick us but we don't know when. All we can do for now is ride like crazy and enjoy this weather and hope we don't have to pay the price on the other end with 100 degree days in November.
There are a lot of fun things that I do for the site, but one of my favorite things is just getting out and riding, then doing a Day Ride feature on the trip. On April 28th I did just that. At around 8:00 in the morning myself and a friend of mine took off to get the story on Mt. Lemon. I had heard so much about it, I wanted to see for myself what all the fuss was about. Besides that, any excuse to get out for a road trip is good enough for me.
I have found that planning a short riding trip in my world is like looking at that huge piece of pie with a scoop of ice cream on top after a big dinner and saying, "Go ahead, throw on another scoop, I can handle it". I like to be on the road so much, I'll pile on extra miles just to see if I can do it. That's what happened on this trip. We got to Florence Junction where you would normally turn off to go to Tucson on we said, "Hey, it's going pretty good, let's go on out to Globe and then cut down South, It's only about another 60 miles". So off we went, throwing my Mapquest plans out the window in the first 90 minutes. It was a good plan up to the point where there was road construction, traffic stops and "Snow Birds" getting one last ride in their Winnebago through the twisties on their way back home. All of this excitement added 2 hours onto a trip that was already a good full day. But that's OK, it's all about the adventure, Right?
So we finally made it to Globe for some gas, water and a break while talking to some riders doing a cross country trip from Illinois. A couple of miles down the road we found the turnoff for Hwy. 77 that was to take us to Tucson. Little did we know that this was also the Entrance to the Jurassic Park of bugs. For the next 80 miles we were hammered, splattered, pelted, slimed and thoroughly ticked off by bugs beyond belief. I'm sure some of these bugs ancestors are hanging in the Smithsonian with "saurus" attached to the end of their names. They were so big I found myself bobbing and weaving like Mike Tyson with a one eared boxer after him. We must have been riding through some sort of proving grounds out there as I came in contact with several MOAB's and Bunker Bugster's on this stretch of highway (see last week's letter on bugs). Finally around Oracle we had to pull over and do some housekeeping on our sunglasses and windshield (not my windshield, never).
So after a couple more hours of snaking our way through Tucson we were finally at the base of Mt. Lemon ready to take the 27 mile ride to the top. By this time, my original timing and plans were merely a side note to what had turned into more than just a short Day Ride. We had already gone 230 miles and we hadn't even reached our destination yet. And we still had to ride home! So up the hill we went, like an Ethiopian after a breadstick, avoiding tar snakes and testing the sidewalls on those radial tires. We made good time winding our way up the mountain for a piece of that famous homemade pie that was waiting for us at the Mt. Lemon Cafe. We had reached our destination safe and sound, albeit a little more haggard and slimy than we would have been if we would have stuck to the original plans.
Our goal now was to simply get home before dark. It was 4:00 and we knew we had 180 miles to go. Our nice little day ride was starting to feel more like an audition for an ironbutt ride. After 440 miles and 11 hours in the saddle, we made it home by about 7:00pm safe and sound, although not quite as perky as when I left. It could easily be a 2 day ride if you were to go through in the Saguaro National Park while you are there. I have done a complete Day Ride Feature on the site complete with maps, pictures, Video of the ride and different options that you could take. This is a great ride that I could recommend to everyone. Thanks for riding along with me.

Rudy's Poker Run. This is the story I was told about Rudy.
Three years ago Rudy was returning back form Florence, when he came to the right turn at Hunt and Ellsworth, his bike caught some loose gravel and went down. He awoke in the hospital and was unable to move. After many days of tests and observation he was told that he would only be able to turn his head and should expect little else. Because of his strong heart and his desire to ride again he is recovering ever so slowly, but constantly. Rudy is an example for all of us who love to ride. He could use a little help. For more information, please contact Tom Johnson @ 602-275-7996. Registration from 10-11am at Canyon Creek Community Church, 25N. Roosevelt, Chandler, AZ. $20 per person, $35 per couple.

Run For The Wall 2003.
The ride from California will be coming in at about 2:30 PM at the Texaco Gas Station located at exit 94 and Interstate 10 in Tonapah. South West side of the road we will arrive in parade formation and stop to refuel our bikes. We then pull out about 3:20 or so for an escorted ride to Wesely Bolin Memorial Plaza by the Capital to pay our respects to the fallen comrades at the Viet Nam War Memorial. We will have a short Wreath laying Ceremony and then time to visit all the other memorials on the grounds. Then we are off to our final destination for the day at the Carl Hayden Veterans Memorial Hospital to visit the veterans. If you would like to ride with the group into Phoenix meet there at around 3:00 for the ride. The route will come East on I-10 to 7th Ave. then turn South to Washington St., turn West to Wesley Bolin Plaza. Here is a video of a Vietnam Vet talking about the Purple Heart.
Here is a commentary from Randy Schadowsky, a participant in the event for the last 8 years. The run is an event that changes life's. We provide the welcome home that Viet Nam Vet's never got. We provide the veteran an opportunity to get back in touch with his brotherhood (that of the military). We help the vet get on the road to healing himself and provide contacts and associations that help with AA and PTSD issues. Our ride across America takes ten days from start to finish. Along the way we visit schools, VA Hospitals, Veterans Memorials and provide support to all vets. We try to educate the public on the POW/MIA Issues that face us now and in the future. We believe that al military men and women should be accounted for and that they should be laid to rest on American Soil. I was never in the military, however I have been welcomed into a family that show love and support to all. We provide the support that say's that was then and this is now. It's a time for many vets to heal and to let go. Many of our family members have found that the association with the Run For The Wall has changed their life's forever. I'm one of those people. When I was a child, I would watch the evening news and wonder if the person being placed into the chopper was my brother. It was a very traumatic time in my life, one I'll never forget. This is part of the reason I continue to ride and support the RFTW. Here is some more information about the Run For The Wall.
