Weekly Update
5/5/10
Greetings Riders,
Well, once again the riders in
Phoenix area showed how giving we can be. Sunday was the "Ernie
Palooza Ride" that turned out to be a huge success for raising money for Phoenix
Fire Captain Ernie Lizarraga who was critically injured in the motorcycle
accident in late March where 4 riders lost their lives when a dump truck ran
them over. Ernie is doing better every day, but is still a very long way to a
full recovery and will still be in the hospital for quite a while. (See video from TV-12 News)
Given that Ernie will not be able to
work for a long time and his benefits are running out, his
Firefighter brotherhood put together a benefit for him and his family. Donations
poured in from all over including Desert Ridge to host the end location as well
as the restaurant Notorious P.I.G. at Desert Ridge that donated all of the food
and drink that day.
The day started with a pancake
breakfast at station 54 where the motorcycles congregated until the ride
left at 10:45am. Then an unescorted ride headed North to Carefree
Highway past the location of the accident, then on through Cave Creek/Carefree
before ending at the Notorious P.I.G. for lunch and entertainment. The total
donations with approximately 800 riders participating in both locations was
approximately $33,000 for the day. With other money still coming in, they are
expecting to raise a total of $42,000. Once again, the riders in this State are
absolutely amazing with their generosity.
Thanks to Chris Newman and Paul
Parker who organized this event. They did a great job for their
first time at organizing a ride. I would also like to give a big thumbs up to
the new restaurant Notorious P.I.G. at Desert Ridge for donating all of the food
and drink. Their food is really good and the outside patio is great. I had their
Cheeseburger and Mac and Cheese side and would highly recommend it. We will be
back for sure. Thanks to all the riders who participated. I took 135 pictures of
the day.
UPDATES:
I have a few important updates that I would like
to pass on to you:
The Riders in Chandler Have Spoken loud and
clear.
The rider participation this
season after moving the Downtown Chandler Bike Night to Tuesday
Night was down by about 50%. The only thing that had changed was the
night, so I wanted to see if that was the problem. I put a poll on the site to
see which night was preferred by you, the riders. It was a clear choice by 83%
to move it back to Wednesday night. So that is what we are doing. Starting May
12th, the Downtown Chandler Bike Night will be moving to Wednesday Night with
Live Music by J.D. Madrid. Please forward this on to your riding pals that
enjoy the Downtown Chandler Bike Night. See you there.
Downtown Scottsdale Bike Night has been cancelled as of April 28th.
Cyclerides.com Westgate Bike Night Special Event May 20th:
LADIES. . . we are having a
night for you! Since May is Woman Rider Month, we are going have
the Cyclerides.com Woman Rider night on Thursday, May 20th
at the Westgate Bike Night. For all of the Women who ride in their own bike on
May 20th, we will have VIP parking for you front and center in events
plaza. Once you have parked, you can go to the Arrowhead HD booth and the
Petersen Johnson booth to pick up your gift bags with special gifts, coupons,
gift certificates, etc. for the first 100 riders. For those Woman riding
customized bikes, we will have those bikes displayed on the bridge between the
fountains for everyone to see. So ladies, tell all of your Woman Rider friends
to set aside that night to be recognized at the Cyclerides.com Westgate Bike
Night.
***Stay tuned for some new photos that I will
have from a ride that I will be taking this weekend.
And don't miss my upcoming article on "Group
Riding". This will be one that you will want to send to those in
your group that are violators of the basic common courtesy involved in group
riding. Ride safe this weekend.
