Weekly Update

Greetings Riders,
Well, I mentioned in last week's letter that our hot weather was lurking and ready to jump out at any moment. It looks like that time is now to be breaking into the 100+ degree days. I was doing some errands around town on the motorcycle yesterday with the high temperature of 99 degrees and low humidity. You can really feel the moisture being sapped out of you with dry lips and the need for more water stops. For those that are new to the area, be sure and drink plenty of water when out riding in the Valley. Dehydration in 100+ degree outdoor temperature, 130 degree asphalt and the wind in your face can come upon you very quickly. If you even feel the least bit dizzy from the heat, stop for water immediately. Keep a supply of Blistex, Sunscreen and Water for summer riding.
The hot weather is not all that is upon us. May 25th ends the grace period for rider education and warnings for "Noise Violations" in Carefree. Starting the 26th of May you will be subject to a real ticket if you were to exceed the noise ordinance in Carefree. So, if you are going down Scottsdale Rd. into Carefree and you see a patrol car with a microphone sticking above a Sheriff car that looks like this, they are conducting an interview with your motor. If that interview says that your motor is speaking over 85 DB you would be at risk for a ticket.
And now for some role playing. If you are stopped for a noise violation, here is how it might go.
(Setup: You are riding on Tom Darlington Rd. in Carefree. You pass a Sheriff car with a funny looking microphone on a poll 2 feet above the car. Reds lights are soon flashing behind, you pull over, a Deputy walks up to your bike)
Deputy: Do you know why I stopped you?
Rider: My bike was so quiet that you thought I was coasting because I had run out of gas and you wanted to see if you could help? Or was it that I was going to slow and impeding traffic?
Deputy: No, you were violating the noise ordinance of Carefree. See those expensive houses up there on the side of that hill? They are tired of all your noise every Saturday and Sunday while running up and down their roads. You are vibrating their fine China out of the cabinets, rearranging their art collections on the walls, scaring the hair off of their Schitzu's, causing feedback in their hearing aids and making it virtually impossible to hear reruns of "The Golden Girls" without blaring the TV. So they have bought me this really cool $900 gadget that will tell me how loud your motorcycle is, and have empowered me to write you a citation that could cost you $175. Now you don't want to be responsible for all of this havoc do you?
Rider: But I was only doing 30 MPH.
Deputy: Speed is not the issue here, it is noise. You need to do the speed limit while keeping your RPM's as low as you can to keep the noise of your motorcycle below 85 DB.
Rider: Does this mean that you are going to write me a ticket?
Deputy: Not this time. I just want you to go up there and talk to these people, straighten their pictures, reposition the china, pay for noise counseling for the Shitzu and buy them the DVD of "The Golden Girls 1982-1989". That should be enough to keep you from making noise through here again.
Ok, that is obviously a tongue in cheek way of looking at this situation, but it is now real. You will be subject to a ticket if you violate the 85 DB's. Here is what Lt. Trombi from the Sheriff's Department emailed me last week:
"Barry, I thought I would send you message that effective Memorial Day weekend we will be ending our "grace period" and start issuing citations under the sound ordinance. The education process of this ordinance has been very successful and effective. Deputies have issued approximately 50 warning letters to those who were in violation. The response from those stopped and warned has been equally positive. Most, if not all, have been receptive to the logic behind the ordinance. If we never have to issue one citation, we will be happy. Although the grace period ends May 25th it does not mean everyone stopped will be cited. It simply means that we will now have the latitude to issue cites where appropriate. Thanks for all your help and cooperation during this learning process." Lt. Trombi.
What should you do when riding through Carefree to get to Cave Creek?
First of all, don't stop riding through that beautiful area. It shouldn't be a problem unless you are trying to get a ticket. I did extensive testing on this with the Sheriff 2 months ago. Click here for Video Page.
Here are some tips:
1. All you need to do is just stay in a higher gear to keep your RPM's as low as possible. And don't downshift and let your pipes reverberate. There shouldn't be a problem if you do those 2 things. My bike with a thunderheader passed just fine when ridden in third gear at low RPM's doing 25-30 MPH.
2. If you see a white car with a microphone sticking up from the roof, "DUH!", adjust to lower RPM's and a higher gear. You have to be very close for the best reading, so you should have plenty of time to adjust.
I sense that the Sheriff department is most interested in those that are blatantly violating and intentionally trying to make noise. While talking with Lt. Trombi on the phone, he indicated that they have been very pleased with the response from the riders in holding down the excessive noise. If you do get a ticket, let me know the circumstances and the DB violation. I would like to track that for a while.

I have not been in the armed services or in a war, but I appreciate all that have and are currently serving our Country. It has been very interesting hearing all of the stories from the soldiers and reporters from the Iraq war. Here is one that I found particularly interesting and couldn't stop reading. It gives you a great insight as to how compassionate and how great of a warrior the American Soldier is. Click Here for this compelling story from James Lacey, Time Magazine correspondent who was embedded with the 101st Airborne Division. Click Here for the story.
Here is another testimony that I received from a rider that recently used the V.I.P. Card. This one even has visual proof.
"Hey I just used my new VIP card today at Hacienda Harley and I saved $75.99. I tell you what Barry I'm a believer now. I bought or should I say I "special ordered" a set of bags for my Dyna Wide Glide. I truly expected the parts manager to tell me the card could not be used on "special order" parts. I tell you what, I near doubled what this card cost me and I haven't even used it on anything else yet. Thanks a lot Barry.   Cliff & Kathy"
If you would like 20% off parts, accessories and motorclothes, free food, free dyno runs and ongoing discounts all year long, order your V.I.P. card online for only $39.95 and save hundreds of dollars all year long.
As for me this week. Mrs. C. and I are going to take a ride up North to Prescott on Saturday for the party on Whiskey Row. No matter where you go, it should be great weather for riding.
Until Next Week,
Blessings and Safe Riding To All,
Barry Caraway
