Cyclerides.com Weekly Update

Greetings Riders,

Well, here we are in mid April. It's that time of year where I reflect on our past motorcycle trips and start day dreaming about where to go this year. Since these trips are annually one of the most enjoyable times of the year for Mrs. C. and myself, I will admit to getting a little anxious thinking about where this Summer's motorcycle trip might take us. I've got some ideas for this year, but I really haven't decided yet where we are going for sure. One place I have always wanted to go is Banff, known as one of the most beautiful places in North America located in Alberta, Canada. Banff is located in the Canadian Rockies and features beautiful sites like Moraine Lake. Check out the awesome picture on their web site. I have got to go ride through this place.

As you probably know, I have a few long trips listed on the site, but if you are planning on creating a trip of your own, it helps to have some software or a good location to gauge mileage, route, etc. I came across a really cool page on the Harley Site called Ride Planner. The Ride Planner is one of the best I have seen for planning a route. All you have to do is choose a name for your ride, pick a date, choose one-way or round trip, input your starting point and destination. It defaults to give you the quickest route to your destination. But that is usually freeways. So after it has drawn your route, choose the change roads tab, choose segment 1 and then click the radio button that says "shortest distance" and click "Draw new route". Click Done and you will see how far your round trip is and how long it might take.

At this point you can click change roads again, choose a segment and literally pick your own route and it will change it right on the screen. Either click on a direction tab or click draw new route after you have clicked on the road that you want to travel on. After you are finished custom making your route, you press done and the print out your map. At the bottom left of the screen you can choose to not show the HD dealerships on the map. You can also print out a turn by turn itinerary of your trip.

One of the shorter trips I want to take this year is a ride to Silver City, NM and do some riding around that area. So I plugged that destination into this program as the shortest route on segment one and then custom made my route on segment two, the return leg. Here is the map that it gave me. The route ended up being 673 miles and an estimated 16 hours and 30 minutes.

So as you are setting around with some time to kill, or you just want to take a few minutes to day dream about your next trip and want to know how far and how long it will take you, go the Harley-Davidson Ride Planner and check it out. You don't even have to own a Harley to use it. The program is smart, but it can't tell nor doesn't care what you are riding. If you are just looking to see a map of a city or state, you can click here. You can also check out the Cyclerides.com Day Rides section for several other ideas for long and short rides.
