Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
3/30/04
Greetings Riders,
Well, Arizona Bike Week is officially on it's way. There
are thousands of bikes in town and no doubt a few more heading into town later this week for the Cyclefest opening
on Thursday April 1st. There has been plenty of action so far and more to come starting with tonight's Downtown
Scottsdale Party. We took a short 200 mile ride through Wickenburg, Yarnell, Prescott and Mayer on Sunday.
The scenery is beautiful right now.
Wednesday would be a good opportunity to try that with the Wednesday Ride for Kids. If you haven't been out of
town yet, it should be a good Spring for riding up North.
As with any city that has a Bike Week and many more motorcycles in town
there is an additional need to consider safety when you are riding.
In Daytona this past year there were 5 fatal motorcycle accidents. 4 of those accidents were the fault of the rider.
So not only do we have to be aware of the cars that aren't used to so many motorcycles being in town,
but everyone needs to drink responsibly and pay extra attention when riding. We had our first fatality Sunday
night when a motorcycle rider hit the back of another motorcycle and was thrown into a sign. Police reported that
alcohol was a factor in this crash and the driver that was hit was also cited for DUI.
PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOUR BUDDIES that
are drinking too much so that we don't have even one more of these incidents this year.
I have a few updates and some information that might be useful for the rest of
the week.
1. There have been some concerns about the dust on the upper portion of the track at
Rawhide. ABW recognized this and they have re-sprayed the entire track
again to firm it up. It appears to be a lot better. Some have asked me about the "asphalt like" conditions.
I was referring to the area where Cyclefest and the "Main Street" vendors will be set up. I was out there
today and it is just that. Here
is a picture of an area where someone did a little burnout
and left some tread. There is some loose gravel around, but it should be generally dust free.
2. I also wanted to clarify how the traffic flow will be for Cyclefest. All motorcycles will enter on Williams Rd. off of Scottsdale Rd. You can then take
either the West entrance which will take you to the upper track for parking for the Handlebar Saloon and other
activities or you can take the track all the way around to enter the lower vendor area. You can take the East
entrance which will take you directly to the lower vendor area for parking. There are steps in the middle
of the track that will take you from the upper level parking down to the vendor area. Exiting the area will be
through the tunnel in the lower area and then left to Miller Rd. and then to Pinnacle Peak to Scottsdale Rd. It
will be much safer to enter Scottsdale Rd. at the Traffic Light. Cars can park in the front of Rawhide and walk
through the town to the Venue. Click
Here For Map of Traffic Flow.
3. MAKE SURE YOU LOCK YOUR BIKE!!! Bike thefts have been extremely high so far. I
have heard that as many as 18 bikes have been stolen so far. This is happening all over town. And these crooks
are very bold. I heard one was taken right in front of Hacienda, one right in front of Salty Senorita's and one
at the Rawhide. So even if you plan to be away from your bike for only a couple of minutes, be sure and lock
it every way you can right now, because this is easy pickins' for the thieves.
If you have emailed me in the last couple of weeks
and I have not responded, I am not ignoring you, just trying to find the time. I will get to them as soon as possible.
If it is real important, please send again. Thanks.

Tuesday, March 30th: Joeta's Treasure Hunt is new, but it sounds interesting with a new twist on a poker run. Ends at Victory with Mogollon in
concert.
The Tuesday night in Scottsdale Party is a must. This is always a lot of fun. The street will be blocked off between ACME and Dos
Gringos for bike parking and then everyone makes a stop at the other locations. It's a big round robin between
all the stops that this year include Flicka's, Billet Bar and the Venue of Scottsdale. The Venue, located
at the end of Craftsmen Ct. will have 2 tribute bands playing that night. The first act is a tribute to "The
Doors" and the second one a tribute to AC/DC. This will be free admission for these concerts.
Wednesday, March 31st: Wednesday's
Riding for Kids. This used to
be the Wednesday Wish Kids Ride. This ride increases in attendance every year and should be well over 1000 riders
this year. This is a 250 mile ride full of beautiful scenery and fun. I have always enjoyed this ride very much.
This year will be up to Payson, Pine, Strawberry, Cliff Castle Casino, Grand Canyon Harley and Rock Springs. I
will be doing this one. The Ride ends at the Handlebar Saloon.
The Little River Band
Concert. This is one of my favorite all-time bands from the 70's and they
are going to be at The Handlebar Saloon for an 8:00pm concert. The cost
is $13 in advance or $15 at the door. I will definitely be there for this one.
For those of you that are not concert minded and want to ride. The Wednesday night party is at Margarita Rocks in Downtown Tempe,
4th St. and Mill. They are featuring their 10 cent wings and penny tacos. Party starts at 2PM.
Thursday, April 1st: Cyclefest
at Rawhide begins and the Handlebar Saloon will be open from 11:00am til 1:00am
with activities throughout the day. This is the day that the vendors
will open and you can cruise the vendor village. Check the Schedule for the list of
activities.

Friday, April 2nd: Hacienda
Customs "Ride To The Bulls". This

Foundation. Sounds like fun, I might even climb up on one of these bulls and take a ride.
Saturday, April 3rd: Chosa's Harley-Davidson
5th Annual Torch Ride. This ride leaves Chosa's in Mesa and goes
through Rio Verde to Cyclefest. This is a very pretty ride. Proceeds benefit Arizona Special Olympics. Includes
a hot breakfast and admission to Cyclefest.
Saturday, April 3rd: Don't Miss the Discovery Channel Great Bike Build Off featuring Matt Hotch VS. The Martin Brothers. Come out Saturday to cast your ballot
for your favorite bike and watch Discovery Channel do their filming. Maybe you can be a part of the show. Winner
to be decided at 6PM. Let's show the rest of the world Arizona Motorcycle Riders.
Saturday, April 3rd: Valley favorite Rhondavous will be performing at
the Handlebar Saloon from 9:00pm til 1:00am.
Sunday, April 4th: As always,
Arizona Bike Week ends with the always popular Logan's Run. This is your last chance
for a scenic ride through the desert. This run will leave Rawhide for a scenic poker run through the Sonoran Desert
