Well, Arizona Bike Week is now officially in full swing. Cyclefest at Westworld opened today with the vendors and their first concert. Mrs. C. and I had a few minutes this afternoon to quickly walk around and I have to say, this is the best laid out ABW that I have seen in 10 years. Everything looks very organized and well presented with an interesting mix of activities. And it looks like the weather is going to treat our out of town guests very well. As usual, for your best bike and people watching from the patio, stop by The Billet or Sugar Daddy's in Scottsdale.
That is more than I can say for how Mother Nature treated us today. We went on our annual Wednesday Ride for Kids today and for the second year in a row, the weather was less than ideal. After looking at the weather reports for the Camp Verde, Pine and Payson areas, we knew it was going to be cold, but they led us to believe that it would be partly cloudy and a high of 53. You could turn those numbers around and it would have been closer. As we left the marathon breakfast line at Kid Chilleen's for Mayer, the temperature dropped about 8 degrees to 49. Little did we know, that would be the warmest we would see for the next 100 miles.
In Camp Verde, I checked the weather for Pine on my TREO and it said light snow and 29 degrees. So we gassed up, geared up and psyched up for the next 60 miles to Payson. But at least this year I didn't have to make up stories to get Scott Pasmore to continue the ride with us. I guess after a year on the Road Glide he was ready for anything. The bad news is that the weather report was right, the good news was that it was 32 degrees instead of 29. As we reached near the top of the rim on Hwy. 260 at about 7000 feet, the snow started falling like crazy (Take a look at this picture) and the temperature dropped like Harley-Davidson stock during a strike. I watched it fall from 49 in Camp Verde to a bone chilling finger numbing 32 degrees just outside of Pine. It was the kind of cold that when you tried to talk it sounded like Bob Dylan on a 3 day bender. The scheduled stop was for Sidewinders in Pine, but we just wanted to stop at the first building with heat and that was the Sportsmen's Chalet, a usual stop for this ride in the past. They had a big fire going in the fire place and some good hot chocolate, so it was the perfect stop.
Once we all got thawed out and dropped into Payson it was a balmy 44 degrees which seemed pretty warm in comparison. Isn't it amazing how perception works with our minds. In Camp Verde 49 seemed extremely cold, but in Payson, after going through 32 degrees for about 15 miles, 44 seemed desirable. As we dropped down the hill from Payson, the thermometer started to rise again on its' way to around 64 degrees as we rolled into Westworld.
Now here is the great thing about riding motorcycles. Even though all 12 of us in this group were completely chilled to the bone to the point of finger tips being numb and aching, we all agreed that it was a great ride, bonded through the process and can't wait for the next adventure. That would have to fall into the category of "If I had to explain it, you wouldn't understand". It was another deposit into the memory bank of life. As usual, I did have the camera along and shot this video of us riding through the snow. If you can be sure and watch this one. Click Here to view. See you all around this week. If you get a chance, stop by Harold's for the Listen Up event and say hi. I will be emceeing the event all weekend. See details below.
