Weekly Update

Greetings Riders,
Well, as most of you know by now, the start of Arizona Bike Week is only 2 days away. There is a new venue, new rides, new events and a new Handlebar Saloon. That is all good, but with the rains that we have had over the last few weeks, Mother Nature has also made things a little better for all of us. I took a trip to Canyon Lake last week and I cannot remember when I have seen the mountains as green and beautiful as they are right now. The wild flowers are blooming and the colors are vibrant. (See Pictures) Even the most baron parts have seemed to come to life. We are all in for a treat as we take the rides through the Arizona countryside this week. Whatever you do, take at least one of the rides that will take you through mountains to enjoy the rare brilliant beauty and perfect weather that we have right now. Have Fun!
But beware, another by product of rain and warm temperatures are BUGS! Don't be surprised if we also run into some pockets of flying insects along the way.
I have a few updates about Arizona Bike Week.
**The ground preparation at Rawhide is complete. There have been hours of grading, rolling packing and spraying at Rawhide to make the ground an asphalt like texture. They sprayed both the lower basin and the complete track around the top. So it should be dust free.
**The Miss Arizona Bike Week contest will start at Hacienda Harley at 6:30 pm with all of the girls in their leather outfits. At 7:15pm they will be transported by limo to the Handlebar Saloon Cajun Party featuring Lisa Haley and the Zydekats from Louisiana for the bikini portion of the contest starting at 8:00pm. Everyone in attendance will receive a free mask and beads.
**You can now cast your vote for fan favorite of the Miss Arizona Bike Week contestants. Popular vote will be announced at Rawhide Friday night. Click Here to Vote.

**The best way to enter the venue at Rawhide is to go North on Scottsdale Rd. from the 101 to Williams Rd. which is the road just South of the main entrance of Rawhide. Turn East on Williams for about 200 yards to the turn into Rawhide through the tunnel. Exiting the venue you will have to go East and out the back way to Pinnacle Peak. This will alleviate severe congestion trying to merge onto Scottsdale Rd.

**It has just been announced that Robbie Knieval will be in town during Arizona Bike Week filming a new documentary. I have been told that he will be showing up at several events with the camera crew in tow.
**Last week I mentioned the drags were at PIR. That was a mistake, they are actually at Firebird Intl. Raceway.
The information below is similar to what I had last week. But I have added a few more events and added some more information to others. So take a look and see what activities look good to you.
Since there are so many activities this year it is impossible to get them all in the newsletter without it being several pages long. Here is a list of things that I have done in the past that were fun and the things that are new that look interesting to me. This way you can pick some events and take time off work. This doesn't mean that the other events are bad, this is just some of my observations and experiences as an "Average Joe Rider". I will keep it as brief as possible and have some links to pictures that I have taken in the past. It will be a very busy next couple of weeks for me but I will try and bring you as much information and pictures as possible.
Friday, March 26th. The first stop in Arizona Bike Week is the Kickstart Party at Hacienda Harley. This gets everyone revved up to get the week going from Noon - 7:30pm. Although this year, the party gets extended to The Handlebar Saloon (open every night) at Rawhide with the Cajun Party featuring Lisa Haley and the Zydekats direct from Louisiana. Two shows at 8:30 and 10:00pm. This will also be the site of the Finals for the Miss AZ Bike Week Contest.
Friday, March 26th. AHDRA Nationals Kick Off Party and Autograph Session. Race Fans this one is for you! Stop by Arrowhead Harley and Chandler Harley this Friday from 3-7pm to get a close up look at an AHDRA Race Bike as well as an autograph from your favorite driver. We will have free food, raffles, last chance to buy you AHDRA Nationals tickets for this week end saving $5 per ticket. Also the AHDRA tshirts at a savings of $5. they can also pre-register for the MDA Rally(April 1)  at AHD and the Sunshine Poker Run (March 29)  at CHD and get a free ride tshirt.
Saturday, March 27th: The drags on Saturday and Sunday presented by Chandler and Arrowhead Harley have always been a part of Bike Week. If you haven't seen them it is worth the trip to Firebird Intl. Raceway to see these 200 mph dragsters. It is amazing how powerful and fast these things are. You can go direct or participate in the Colter and Associates Ride from Hacienda.
Something new on Saturday Night is flat track racing on a 1/8 mile track at Rawhide at 6pm. I usually do the Saturday night downtown but this year Jackson St. is not going to be blocked off, so I am concerned about parking issues and will opt for the Flat Track Racing at Rawhide instead.
Sunday, March 28th: If you are ready to ride, here is your first opportunity for the open road. The 1st Annual Great Arizona Discovery Ride is a beautiful 210 mile ride from Chosa's Apache Junction up through Payson to Grand Canyon Harley in Mayer. The Trifecta Custom Bike Show at the Steelhorse is always a crowded event with thousands of riders. The "Run With The Chiefs" ride is a 60 mile ride from Indian of Mesa to Rawhide that lets you park in the Town of Rawhide.
The place to be Sunday night is the huge party at the popular Sugar Daddy's on Scottsdale Rd. There will be non-stop bands including Knee Deep, Hans Olson, and Matt Tener as well as a bike show, contests, raffles and drink specials. You could also opt for the Molly Hatchet Concert at Rawhide.
Monday, March 29th: This is one of my favorite rides of the whole week. The Sunshine Acres Ride to Tortilla Flat from Chandler Harley-Davidson. This is a beautiful ride to Canyon Lake and Tortilla Flat. Be sure and ride the extra 6 miles of pavement beyond Tortilla Flat. On your way back, stop at the ACME Roadhouse for Live Music and refreshments.
2004 Custom Performance/Arizona Bikeweek Horsepower Competition. Custom Performance is proud to present the official 2004 Arizona Bike Week Horse power competition to all Horse Power Nuts.  Do you think your bike is strong?  Do you think you have what it takes to win? Come prove it during pre-qualification taking place at the Custom Performance Tuning Center daily beginning  Monday, March 30, 2004 through Friday, April 2, 2004 from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. each day.
Tuesday, March 30th: Joeta's Treasure Hunt is new, but it sounds interesting with a new twist on a poker run. Ends at Victory with Mogollon in concert.
The Tuesday night in Scottsdale Party is a must. This is always a lot of fun. The street will be blocked off between ACME and Dos Gringos for bike parking and then everyone makes a stop at the other locations. It's a big round robin between all the stops that this year include Flicka's, Billet Bar and the Venue of Scottsdale. The Venue, located at the end of Craftsmen Ct. will have 2 tribute bands playing that night. The first act is a tribute to "The Doors" and the second one a tribute to AC/DC. This will be free admission for these concerts.
Wednesday, March 31st: Wednesday's Riding for Kids. This used to be the Wednesday Wish Kids Ride. This ride increases in attendance every year and should be well over 1000 riders this year. This is a 250 mile ride full of beautiful scenery and fun. I have always enjoyed this ride very much. The Ride ends at the Handlebar Saloon.
The Little River Band Concert. This is one of my favorite all-time bands from the 70's and they are going to be at The Handlebar Saloon for an 8:00pm concert. The cost is $13 in advance or $15 at the door. I will definitely be there for this one.
For those of you that are not concert minded and want to ride. The Wednesday night party is at Margarita Rocks in Downtown Tempe, 4th St. and Mill. They are featuring their 10 cent wings and penny tacos. Party starts at 2PM.
Thursday, April 1st: Cyclefest at Rawhide begins and the Handlebar Saloon will be open from 11:00am til 1:00am with activities throughout the day. This is the day that the vendors will open and you can cruise the vendor village. Check the Schedule for the list of activities.
Arrowhead Harley 8th Annual MDA Rally. Parade from Arrowhead Harley to Cyclefest to benefit MDA with Jerry's Kids leading the way. Participate in the silent auction.
Friday, April 2nd: Hacienda Customs "Ride To The Bulls". This is the 1st Annual Biker Bull Riding Competition. $10 registration for the ride benefits the AZ Bike Week Charity Foundation. Sounds like fun, I might even climb up on one of these bulls and take a ride.
Saturday, April 3rd: Chosa's Harley-Davidson 5th Annual Torch Ride. This ride leaves Chosa's in Mesa and goes through Rio Verde to Cyclefest. This is a very pretty ride. Proceeds benefit Arizona Special Olympics. Includes a hot breakfast and admission to Cyclefest.
Saturday, April 3rd: Don't Miss the Discovery Channel Great Bike Build Off featuring Matt Hotch VS. The Martin Brothers. Come out Saturday to cast your ballot for your favorite bike and watch Discovery Channel do their filming. Maybe you can be a part of the show. Winner to be decided at 6PM. Let's show the rest of the world Arizona Motorcycle Riders.
Sunday, April 4th: As always, Arizona Bike Week ends with the always popular Logan's Run. This is your last chance for a scenic ride through the desert. This run will leave Rawhide for a scenic poker run through the Sonoran Desert and then back to Cyclefest to benefit Phoenix Children's Hospital. Mogollon will again be playing at the end of the ride. Don't miss the always large silent auction at the end of this ride.
