Weekly Update
3/21/07
Greetings Riders,
In last week's newsletter I gave you a good
overview of the Hearts
To Heroes Ride planned for Saturday, April 14th. For
those of you that might have missed that letter, you can catch up by clicking
the following link. http://www.cyclerides.com/WeeklyUpdate3_14_07.htm. Since this event is for everyone who appreciates our
Armed Forces, I want you to be a part of how things are coming
together and will give you an update for the next 3 weeks as to the
progress.
A new addition to the event since last
week, and one I consider to be the cherry on the top of the sundae is
that world renowned trumpet player and Patriot Jesse
McGuire will provide the musical entertainment at
Phoenix International Raceway. After we have ridden our lap around the track and
park in the infield, Jesse will play the National Anthem as the 6 sky divers
fall from the sky each carrying a flag from a branch of service followed by the
American Flag. This should be a very Patriotic moment. He will
then share a few words with us before leading everyone in "God Bless America". I
am honored to have Jesse be a part of this event. Click
Here for the brand new flyer. Just right mouse click
on the flyer and click "print picture" to print it out to post in your office or
place of business.
I've always known that bikers are some of the
most generous people that there are on this planet. I've seen it in the rides
that I have put on and attended. It never ceases to amaze me at how
the motorcycle community can pour out their heart and wallet when someone is in
need. Last Sunday I had the opportunity to see this once again. Matt Chiapetta
from Chandler Harley called a couple of weeks ago and asked if I would come out
to Greasewood Flats and present the money raised that day to Jay Anderson, one
of his employees that was severely injured in a motorcycle accident. I agreed,
and Mrs. C. and I met the ride at Greasewood. As we rounded the dirt road to
Greasewood I was impressed at how many bikes had participated in this ride. In
all, 118 riders raised over $3300 to help Jay with living expenses while he
is out of work. The amazing thing was, a lot of these riders had never met Jay
Anderson before, but just wanted to help out.
I had never met Jay before either, but I'm glad
I had the opportunity to do so that day, as it was a completely humbling
experience to say the least. You see, Jay didn't just lay his bike
down and suffer a little road rash. His accident was a life changing ordeal. He
was riding down the road when an SUV decided to make a U-Turn without
seeing Jay coming from the opposite direction on his bike. The vehicle
turned right in to the side of Jay completely pulverizing his leg just above the
ankle. The only thing to do was to amputate the foot. That was bad enough,
but then things got worse. Infection set in to his leg above the amputation and
was about to cause life threatening problems. He said 3 doctors came
into his room and told him that he had 2 choices. They could further amputate
his leg above the knee, or he would soon die. He claimed that was an easy
decision. Since he was lucky to be alive, he might as well hang on to what he
had been given, so they did the second operation to take away the infected part
of the leg.
Jay is now doing well physically, able to get
around on crutches but is waiting to be able to wear a prosthetic full
time. As I talked with Jay I was completely humbled to see and hear
the tremendous attitude that this young man has. He wasn't looking
back and complaining about being the victim of the driver of a car that
made a mistake. There wasn't any of that at all. He was just happy to be alive,
willing to deal with the circumstances that he is confronted with and kept
talking about wanting to get back to work and be with his friends. It was
refreshing to spend a few minutes with Jay and soak up his positive attitude.
Five minutes with a guy that has gone through what he has gone through can
really put things into perspective for the rest of us. That corn on my little
toe just doesn't seem to hurt as bad right now.
This chance meeting with Jay reminded me of an
old saying that some of you might have heard.
It goes like this:
"Sorrow looks back,
worry
looks around and faith looks
forward." He appears to be living this one.
Another one that came to mind is this:
Yesterday is History. Tomorrow is
a Mystery, and Today is a gift. That's why we call it the
Present.
Jay Anderson, you are a good man and I am
happy to have met you. Keep looking forward and continue to be an inspiration to
others with your positive attitude.
Most of you know by now that
Arizona Bike Week begins this weekend. From what I have seen from the ABW
ride calendar, this is shaping up to possibly be one of the most well
rounded Bike Weeks that we have ever had here. The entertainment lineup
is good, the rides are good and I am particularly impressed with all of the
expansion of displays and activities this year. I know the organizers of ABW
have been working very diligently on this event and I am excited to get out and
see what they put together. My goal is to make all of the parties this weekend
and stop by as many of the rides as possible. As usual, we will be
doing the Wednesday Ride For Kids again this year. See
the Cyclerides.com Highlighted events below or go to the Guide To Ride for a
complete listing of events. Be especially mindful this week as
the motorcycle traffic will increase and drivers will freak out. Ride
Safe!!
