Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
It's amazing what an 88 degree Sunday will do for getting motorcycle riders out on the road. This past Sunday Mrs. C. and I made our first stop at Ramjet's Customer Appreciation Party...Full. Then on to the opening of Mike's in Fountain Hills...Full. Next stop was Flicka's for the Miss AZ Bike Week competition...Way Full. It was fun to see so many bikes out and about as we rode from place to place. And with the start of Arizona Bike Week only 9 days away, now is the time to get your motor runnin'.
I have to admit, I am really looking forward to Arizona Bike Week this year. With the new venue at Rawhide and all of the new activities including the "Cajun Party",Flat Track Racing, Biker Bull Riding on real bulls, (I might even give this a shot) Cyclefest Vendor Village at Rawhide, "The Little River Band", Discovery Channel Great Bike Buildoff and much more. There is something for everyone. On any given day there seems to be 5 or 6 choices of things to do. And then on April 1st the Vendor Village will open at Cyclefest in Rawhide where YOU and your motorcycle will be a part of the venue. You will be able to cruise the town, park your bike on the street, eat and drink your favorite refreshments as you watch the bikes cruise by. And don't worry about the dust, as we speak they are treating the dirt with a special coating that will make the soil "asphalt like" for the event. This is what we have all been wanting for AZ Bike Week. Just coming back from Daytona Bike Week, that is what it is all about. Thousands of people lined the 5 blocks of Main St. to watch the bikes cruise by every night. If this turns out like I think it will, it should be a lot of fun.
Since there are so many activities this year it is impossible to get them all in the newsletter without it being several pages long. So I thought I would do this a week in advance and just list the things that I have done in the past that were fun and the things that are new that look interesting to me. This way you can pick some events and take time off work. This doesn't mean that the other events are bad, this is just some of my observations and experiences as an "Average Joe Rider". I will keep it as brief as possible and have some links to pictures that I have taken in the past. It will be a very busy next couple of weeks for me but I will try and bring you as much information and pictures as possible.
Friday, March 26th. The first stop in Arizona Bike Week is the Kickstart Party at Hacienda Harley. This gets everyone revved up to get the week going. Although this year, the party gets extended to The Handlebar Saloon (open every night) at Rawhide with the Cajun Party featuring Lisa Haley and the Zydekats direct from Louisiana. Two shows at 8:30 and 10:00pm. This will also be the site of the Finals for the Miss AZ Bike Week Contest.
Saturday, March 27th: The drags on Saturday and Sunday presented by Chandler and Arrowhead Harley have always been a part of Bike Week. If you haven't seen them it is worth the trip to PIR to see these 200 mph dragsters. It is amazing how powerful and fast these things are. You can go direct or participate in the Colter and Associates Ride from Hacienda. Something new on Saturday Night is flat track racing on a 1/8 mile track at Rawhide at 6pm. I usually do the Saturday night downtown but this year Jackson St. is not going to be blocked off, so I am concerned about parking issues and will opt for the Flat Track Racing at Rawhide instead.
Sunday, March 28th: If you are ready to ride, here is your first opportunity for the open road. The 1st Annual Great Arizona Discovery Ride is a beautiful 210 mile ride from Chosa's Apache Junction up through Payson to Grand Canyon Harley in Mayer. The Trifecta Custom Bike Show at the Steelhorse is always a crowded event with thousands of riders. The "Run With The Chiefs" ride is a 60 mile ride from Indian of Mesa to Rawhide that lets you park in the Town of Rawhide.
The place to be Sunday night is the huge party at the popular Sugar Daddy's on Scottsdale Rd. There will be non-stop bands including Knee Deep, Hans Olson, and Matt Tener as well as a bike show, contests, raffles and drink specials.
Monday, March 29th: This is one of my favorite rides of the whole week. The Sunshine Acres Ride to Tortilla Flat from Chandler Harley-Davidson. This is a beautiful ride to Canyon Lake and Tortilla Flat. Be sure and ride the extra 6 miles of pavement beyond Tortilla Flat. On your way back, stop at the ACME Roadhouse for Live Music and refreshments.
2004 Custom Performance/Arizona Bikeweek Horsepower Competition. Custom Performance is proud to present the official 2004 Arizona Bike Week Horse power competition to all Horse Power Nuts. Do you think your bike is strong? Do you think you have what it takes to win? Come prove it during pre-qualification taking place at the Custom Performance Tuning Center daily beginning Monday, March 30, 2004 through Friday, April 2, 2004 from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. each day.
Tuesday, March 30th: Joeta's Treasure Hunt is new, but it sounds interesting with a new twist on a poker run. Ends at Victory with Mogollon in concert.
The Tuesday night in Scottsdale Party is a must. This is always a lot of fun. The street will be blocked off between ACME and Dos Gringos for bike parking and then everyone makes a stop at the other locations. It's a big round robin between all the stops that this year include Flicka's, Billet Bar and the Venue of Scottsdale. The Venue, located at the end of Craftsmen Ct. will have 2 tribute bands playing that night. The first act is a tribute to "The Doors" and the second one a tribute to AC/DC. This will be free admission for these concerts.
Wednesday, March 31st: Wednesday's Riding for Kids. This used to be the Wednesday Wish Kids Ride. This ride increases in attendance every year and should be well over 1000 riders this year. This is a 250 mile ride full of beautiful scenery and fun. I have always enjoyed this ride very much. The Ride ends at the Handlebar Saloon.
The Little River Band Concert. This is one of my favorite all-time bands from the 70's and they are going to be at The Handlebar Saloon for an 8:00pm concert. The cost is $13 in advance or $15 at the door. I will definitely be there for this one.
Thursday, April 1st: Cyclefest at Rawhide begins and the Handlebar Saloon will be open from 11:00am til 1:00am with activities throughout the day. This is the day that the vendors will open and you can cruise the vendor village.
Arrowhead Harley 8th Annual MDA Rally. Parade from Arrowhead Harley to Cyclefest to benefit MDA with Jerry's Kids leading the way. Participate in the silent auction.
Friday, April 2nd: Hacienda Customs "Ride To The Bulls". This is the 1st Annual Biker Bull Riding Competition. $10 registration for the ride benefits the AZ Bike Week Charity Foundation. Sounds like fun, I might even climb up on one of these bulls and take a ride.
Wow! Going through all of this has really gotten me ready to go. These are just a few of the activities that you can choose from. It really should be a fun and exciting week. Take a few days off and participate in some of these events. I will do the last weekend activities in next week's letter. Go to arizonabikeweek.com for all of the event listings or Click Here for a printable list of events you can carry with you. I will have a booth at Cyclefest so be sure and stop by and say hello.
