Weekly Update
3/14/07
Greetings Riders,
Finally, we are having some
awesome riding weather. I have no problem with 90 degrees and riding a
motorcycle. You can even now head North to Sedona and Flagstaff to enjoy 70's
and 80's riding weather. Nights are also great now. I was out last night at the
Buffalo Wild Wings bike
night in Mesa and riding home was nice. By the way, they have a great band
there on Wednesday nights called Soul Catcher.
In the newsletter last week
I talked about the Richard Petty Driving Experience that we had
participated in. I had a number in there to contact Cindy Chisman to make
reservations to do the ride along on April 14th when you are at PIR for the
Hearts to Heroes ride. But, I had the wrong area code for her number. Even
though, a lot of you have figured it out and have made reservations. If you
would like to call her to reserve your spot that day, the correct
number is 602-283-6358.
This week I am going to
bring you up to speed on the Cyclerides.com Hearts To Heroes
ride scheduled for Saturday, April 14th. As a lot of you
know, this will be the 3rd Hearts To Heroes event that we
will have done. I don't want to call it an annual event because I would
prefer that our troops would not be in harms way and my hope is that this
would be the last one. But if that is not the case, and we need to do it
again next year to continue to support our troops, I will be the first in line
to do that. No matter what you think about this war, we need to
distinguish "The War from the Warrior" and we
CAN NOT turn our backs on these brave Men and Women that
are proudly serving in our Armed Forces. We have to be
vigilant in not letting the Hollywood types turn this into another Vietnam
type reception for our troops. With your support of this event, our guys
will see that at least 3000 motorcycle riders in Arizona are here to show them
that we do appreciate their service.
The planning of this has been
especially exciting for me. My personality is the type that I try to do
the best I can at whatever it is that I do, and then top that effort the next
time. After last year, I was concerned about what I could do top the Hearts To
Heroes of 2006. So I let my mind wander and came up with a couple of ideas that
would be off the charts exciting and that had never been done in our
City. My goal was to narrow the gap between our troops on the other
side of the world by bringing us together in one room so that we could
really see, feel and hear their emotions, and they could see how much we
appreciate them. So in my dreams I came up with the idea of doing a
Live Satellite Interview with some of our troops in Iraq to bring everyone up
close and personal.
After a few conversations with
the Department of Defense to tell them our plan and show them your
support of the last 2 years, they have embraced it 110% and the wheels are in
motion to make this happen. Last week we had a 40 minute conference
call with 10 different people scattered from Phoenix, Atlanta,
Virginia and Iraq to put the plan in motion. They are so impressed with the
hour long program we have presented which will take place at CCV, that
they plan to air the last half hour LIVE on the Pentagon TV Channel world wide,
which will include the Live Satellite portion of the event. So every military
installation in the world would be able to see how Arizona supports our troops.
As you can probably imagine, there are a lot of moving parts to putting
something like this together, but everyone involved is completely sold out to
make this happen the best it can be.
The theme of the program this
year will be on the Soldier, the impact on the Families and what our support
means to them. You might remember this past January I did a story on
the deployment of 600 National Guardsmen from Arizona. There was an image
that I will never forget that played over and over as the morning wore on. It
was that of the Mother with the 2 kids pushing the stroller to the
car as the bus drove away with the Father on board to be gone for 16
months. You could see in her eyes that their lives were about to change. And
then there was that image of worry and distress on the face of a young
man's Mother and Father as they give their Son one last hug and watch him
step on board the bus. It was at that moment that I realized that the
sacrifice of war goes many layers deep.
This year I
will have a salute to our Veterans, videos, taped interview with a family,
a Purple Heart recipient, a Soldier just back from Iraq and live interviews on
stage. Of course the Live Satellite Interview from Iraq and 3 live
musical performances that will bring a tear to your eyes and leave you inspired.
After the program
at CCV we will embark on the second part of my dream. I always
thought it would be cool to see the track at Phoenix International Raceway
filled with motorcycles with flags waving as we ride a complete lap around
the track. After a meeting with PIR they agreed that would be a great idea and
one that fits right in with their "Salute To Military Families" program that they are doing the following weekend at
the Subway 500 NASCAR Race at PIR. So we will ride through the tunnel
underneath the track, through the infield and enter the track on turn 2, take a
complete lap and return back to the infield. Once we complete our lap we will
park in the infield for a brief ceremony with 6 sky divers, each carrying a flag
from a branch of service jumping onto the track. After we clear the track you
will also be entertained by the Richard Petty NASCAR's roaring around the track.
One of which you could be in. See
last week's story about that.
There will be no food at PIR. The
end party will be at the Westgate City Center next to the Cardinals Stadium at
the Loop 101 and Glendale Ave. We will be in the events center area of Westgate
next to the fountains where the entire street will be for motorcycle parking
only. Westgate is setting up a stage where Rondavous will perform from 1pm -
3:30pm. Food and refreshments will be available at Westgate from vendors as well
as the local restaurants on site. Click Here to see a short video
of the Westgate fountains and area for the party. Click Here for a
