Weekly Update

Greetings Riders,
Well, after a 2 week hiatus from riding to let things heal, I couldn't wait any longer and finally got back on the bike late yesterday afternoon for some "moto therapy". Wow! I Almost forgot how good it was. For those of you back East, you might want to tune this part out, but it was a beautiful sunny 73 degrees as I hopped on the Road Glide at 5:15pm to head out of this city for some HD R&R. Started out with a t-shirt but soon added a sweatshirt as the sun was dropping below the mountains as I cruised Lake Pleasant. I wasn't the only one enjoying the desert as 6 hot air balloons were landing all around Carefree Hwy. and Lake Pleasant Pkwy. It only ended up being about a 40 mile ride, but it sure was needed. For you John Travolta fans, you might enjoy this. You have probably heard that he is the pilot for his own Boeing 707 that he actually parks at his house. In fact, I have read that Travolta is the only private citizen in the U.S. to own and operate a Boeing 707. He employs a cockpit crew of six. "He uses the 707 as the family van, the Gulfstream is his sports car." Don't know what he is doing in town, but in my travels yesterday, I happened to see his jet parked at Deer Valley Airport in Phoenix. Here it is. Travolta is an Ambassador-at-Large for the Australia based Qantas Airways.
If you ride a motorcycle I'm sure you have heard a few of these comments from your friends, family or co-workers.

"You are crazy to ride a motorcycle", "You are nuts to ride a motorcycle in this town", "You can't be very smart if you are going to get on the motorcycle today", "You are just plain dumb to ride a motorcycle from here to Canada when you could get there in a plane in 3 hours." In the past we respond with our own opinion. But beyond that, we just had to listen to these kind of comments without much of a scientific rebuttal. That has all changed. You can now refer to a study that shows that you are actually more cognitive alert than they are.
Thanks to research by Ryuta Kawashima in Tokyo, we now have the technical information to back up what we already know. The following is a story done by AFP that says that riding motorcycles helps keep you young.
TOKYO (AFP) – Riding motorcycles helps keep drivers young by invigorating their brains, the scientist behind popular "Brain Training" computer software said Wednesday, citing a new scientific study.
"The driver's brain gets activated by riding motorbikes" in part because it requires heightened alertness, Ryuta Kawashima said after his research team and Yamaha Motor conducted a string of experiments involving middle-aged men.
"In a convenient and easy environment, the human mind and body get used to setting the hurdle low," he warned. "Our final conclusion is that riding motorcycles can lead to smart ageing."
Kawashima is the designer of "Brain Training" software, which incorporates quizzes and other games and is available on the Nintendo DS game console under the name "Brain Age" in North America.
A self-professed motorcycle fan, 49-year-old Kawashima cited a new study conducted jointly by Yamaha and Tohoku University, for which he works.
One experiment involved 22 men, all in their 40s and 50s, who held motorcycle licenses but had not taken a ride for at least a decade.
They were randomly split into two groups -- one asked to resume riding motorcycles in everyday life for two months, and another that kept using bicycles or cars.
"The group that rode motorbikes posted higher marks in cognitive function tests," Kawashima said.
In one test, which required the men to remember a set of numbers in reverse order, the riders' scores jumped by more than 50 percent in two months, while the non-riders' marks deteriorated slightly, he said.
The riders also said they made fewer mistakes at work and felt happier.
"Mental care is a very big issue in modern society," said Kawashima. "I think we made an interesting stir here as data showed you can improve your mental condition simply by using motorbikes to commute."

Now you can tell your friends, family and co-workers that you are smarter and feeling younger because you ride a motorcycle with the data to prove it.
As the late great Paul Harvey used to say, "Now you know the rest of the story".
