Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
2/9/05

Greetings Riders,

It's now the middle of February and the big riding season is right in front of us. One major event in our town that is coming up is Arizona Bike Week. This year Arizona Bike Week is going to run a full 10 days from April 1st through April 10th and will once again be held at Rawhide in Scottsdale. There are so many events going on with ABW this year that I will not list them all here, but will just highlight a few of the festivities that I think will be fun to participate in to get you started.

This year the start of Arizona Bike Week will be a lot different. Instead of a party at one dealership, on April 1st there will be "Rev-Up" parties at 10 dealerships around the Valley and State. You will find activities going on throughout the day that include: live bands, free food, and huge discounts to get you going for all of the riding you will be doing during Arizona Bike Week. Look for the dealership in your area, or better yet, take the day and visit all of them. The participating Valley dealerships include: Chosa's, Superstition, Chandler, Arrowhead and Buddy Stubbs. Around the State you can visit Grand Canyon Harley, Mother Road, Sierra Vista, HD of Tucson and Territorial HD. A new event that will get you acquainted with all of the dealerships is the ABW "Rattlesnake Charity Ride". Upon registration you will receive a stamp card. All you need to do is visit each participating dealer and have your card stamped to be eligible for the drawing of a 2005 Harley Fat Boy to be drawn on April 10th in the Handlebar Saloon. Sounds like the odds could be pretty good. You can start this ride on March 1st by registering at any of the above listed participating dealerships.

Starting at 6:00pm on the night of April 1st will be the Dedication of the American Veteran's Traveling Tribute, "The Wall". The American Veterans Traveling Tribute is an unforgettable exhibit that pays tribute to the men and women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Vietnam War is of major importance to the Tribute and the 4/5 scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is its visual centerpiece, standing 8 feet high at the apex and spanning 378 feet! The purpose of the "Traveling Tribute" is not to glorify wars fought, but to pay homage to those who served their country. You may visit "The Wall" during all 10 days of ABW.

Following the dedication will be the start of the ABW "Rev Up Party" in the Handlebar Saloon featuring The Marshall Tucker Band in Concert at 8:30pm followed by the Finals of the Miss Arizona Bike Week contest starting at 10pm. This year the Handlebar will feature a different theme every night. The theme for the first night will be "Celebrate America" with a Celebrate America Parade. The Handlebar will be open from 10am every day and will feature Live Bands and events throughout the day. Texas Hold'em Poker Championships will be held at 3pm every day. Click Here for all of the events planned for the Handlebar Saloon.

ABW will also feature over 150 vendors as well as the Screamin' Eagle ABW Nationals drag racing at Firebird, a wide variety Charity Rides throughout the week that will take you all over the State, Lawnmower and mini bike racing, Poker Tournaments every day, Sanctioned Pro Bronc & Bull Rodeo" Bikers competing on Live Bulls, Live Music all day, all week, and many more activities. And one of my favorite events will be back again. The Old Town Scottsdale Tuesday Night Party. This is a great time and will this year include ACME Bar and Grill, The Billet Bar, Dos Gringos and Billy Bob's Saloon. Fit this one into your schedule.

Another big event this year is the Grand Opening of the new Buddy Stubb's, the Valley's newest and largest Harley-Davidson Dealership, on April 1st. Buddy Stubb's is building a new 47,000 sq. ft. dealership on Cave Creek Rd. just a couple of blocks North of the existing location at 13850 N. Cave Creek Rd. This dealership will also include a two level, 3,000 sq. ft. motorcycle museum rotating 90 of his 150 collectable motorcycles, meeting rooms, customer waiting rooms and greatly expanded service, parts and motorclothes areas. To kick off the new dealership, Evel Knievel will be there in person with an exhibit of his famous motorcycles and to sign autographs. You can also see Rhett Rotten's "Wall of Death" shows all day and visit with Jean Davidson. There will also be three bands with music all day. Bike shows and Historic motorcycle displays. Eat,Drink and Have some FUN!!! New store specials all day. 10:00am till 8:00pm. GRAND FINALE Evel's escorted group ride to the Marshall Tucker Concert at the Handlebar Saloon at Cyclefest in Rawhide. Click Here for the flyer with all the information. 602-971-3400.

There are many more rides and activities for you to participate in throughout the 10 days. Click the following links to view the Events page for ABW and the Handlebar Saloon Schedule to see activities and times inside the Handlebar. From what I can tell, this ABW has really expanded and is providing more opportunities for involvement this year. I have only listed a few in this letter. I will be highlighting others as we get closer. Take a look for yourself and join in. www.arizonabikeweek.com .

Cyclerides.com Hearts To Heroes Ride Update:

The planning for the Cyclerides.com Hearts To Heroes Ride is going well. As you know from previous letters, this ride is to Support Our Troops and to raise postage money for "Packages From Home", a 501(c)3 organization that sends care packages to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The money raised will be used directly for postage to send the packages. In case you missed last week's letter, here are the ride details:

When: Saturday, March 5th.

Time: Sign in is from 8am - 11am. Escorted Ride by the Sheriff leaves at 11am.

Where: Start location is Christ's Church of the Valley, located on the SW corner of 67th Ave. and Happy Valley Rd. in Glendale.

Donation: $10 per bike, plus some needed goods for the troops. (click here for the list)

Activities: CCV is donating a continental breakfast at the start. There will be military hardware and displays on site as well as troops for you to speak with and thank. We will also present a 5-10 minute video saluting our troops and telling you about "Packages From Home". This will be shown on the two 20 ft. screens inside.

Ride End: Ride will end at the Anthem Community Park on stage where we will have the Army National Guard Band lead us in the Star Spangled Banner.
Speakers: We will have testimonies and a Q&A from Soldiers that have done a tour in Iraq, words from Parents of Soldiers in Iraq and insights from Military Officers that have been to Iraq. I have also invited U.S. Congressman Trent Franks to ride with us and speak at the end. I hope he can make it. The day will end with the song "America" sung by the crowd and Live Music on the stage.

Click Here for the flyer and all information.

We would also like to make this like a toy ride to collect some goods to send to the troops. Donations of goods are critical. You can bring them in a bag the day of the ride or you can drop whatever you would like to donate at one of the following locations. Superstition HD, Chosa's HD, Arrowhead HD, Chandler HDBuddy Stubbs HDBourgets of ArizonaChandler Custom Cycles and Custom Performance. Click Here for a list of Needed Items. Boxes should be set up by Friday. Thanks for your help.

This past weekend I went to my first packing party for "Packages From Home". The packing was held at Pulte Homes in Scottsdale where cadets from the Civil Air Patrol donated their time to help out. Channel 3 and channel 12 were both there to do a report about "Packages From Home" for the news. To better understand the cause that you will be riding for,

Click Here for the Video. Look real close and you will even spot Mrs. C. helping out.
Pictures. These are pictures of the recent packing party. Look at the Valentines cards written by kids that were sent to the troops. They are very heart warming.

I think this is really going to be a fantastic event and one that we can all be proud to be a part of. From the initial response from riders and the TV Media, I am expecting a large attendance for this event. We are adding displays and activities to this ride on a daily basis. I will update you every week as to what is new. Take the day off and join us to Support Our Troops. If you would like to put up some flyers around your workplace, Click Here for the flyer.

Extras

This was probably one of the better years for Superbowl commercials. I had a few favorites, but the one that I thought was the best was the Anheuser Busch: Thanking the Troops. A great tribute to our Soldiers. Click Here to view that commercial and all of the others on the Superbowl. It will be under the Anheuser Busch, 6th one down called Thanking the Troops. Enjoy.

Here is a wipeout I never get tired of watching. I did some slow motion on it to really give you a feel for the jolt to his body. Click Here. And now for the: How did she do that? Video. Click Here.

As for me this weekend, if the weather report holds true, it might be movies and popcorn at Harkins.
