Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
2/7/07

Greetings Riders,

Now this is the kind of weather I have been waiting for. 80 degrees and sunny. Doesn't get much better than that. After suffering from a case of "cabin fever" for the last few weeks, I took advantage of the warm weather to do a couple of errands on the bike and ended up riding the 45 mile loop of I-17, I-10 and the 101. Now that is wanting to ride pretty bad to do that route. Not much to look at, but I enjoyed the wind and sunshine for an hour. With the weather warming up, it is a good time to stop by some of the new bike nights in your area.

I need your help!! Since we are getting close to riding season, I am going to do an article about things that you need to pack with you on a trip. I'm sure we all have our special little items that we have found that can make our trip a little easier or safer. Please email me your ideas of things to pack on a trip for you, the bike or whatever you think is handy. Email to info@cyclerides.com .

Everyone likes a good trip idea, so I'm going back in the archives of photos this week to bring you a trip that we took last July. We actually took this trip as a family vacation in the car, but this would also be a good excuse to take a long weekend ride on the bike. Our destination was Catalina Island, just off the coast of California near Long Beach. Catalina is a place that I had been hearing about for a long time, but just never took the effort to go there. The effort I am referring to is actually getting there. As I mentioned, Catalina is an island, located about 26 miles off the coast of California South of Long Beach. So riding there is not an option. Unless maybe you have one of those new Gold Wings with the air bags. But short of that, the only way you can get there is to take a ferry, plane or a helicopter.

There are many ways to navigate this trip, but we decided to leave Phoenix on a Thursday afternoon, take I-10 across Arizona and California to make our way to Long Beach, the home of the Queen Mary for the night. With only 2 ways to get to Catalina, those of you that know my infatuation with flying won't be surprised that I opted to take the helicopter as our mode of transportation to Avalon, on Catalina Island. This cuts the trip down to about 17 minutes vs. 1 hour and 45 minutes on the ferry. So we caught one of the first choppers out in the morning and arrived at the island at 8:15am. When you take the helicopter you are left with a short cab ride or about a mile walk into town.

Catalina Island is one of the Southern Channel islands which lies closest to the mainland of California. For the most part the terrain is rugged and varies from sea level to as high as 2,000 feet. The island has a long history and has been inhabited for 7000 years. In 1846, shortly before the United States assumed control of California and its islands, the Mexican government granted ownership of the island to a private citizen. Changing hands a number of times during the late 1800s and early 1900s, the island has belonged to the Wrigley family since 1919. Settlers on Catalina Island raised sheep and cattle in the mid 1800s, introducing a ranching industry that continued in some form until the mid 1950s.

But now, Catalina Island is a stop for tourists from all over the world and those with massive boats that you will see moored in the harbor. Catalina is the name of the Island, but Avalon is the name of the city that you will be visiting when you arrive. Avalon only has about 3500 residents and is full of restaurants, hotels, shopping and entertainment to easily keep you busy for a few days. Boat trips, underwater exploration, tours of the island, horseback riding, parasailing, snorkeling, golf and hiking are a few of the things you can do. We were only there for the day so we tried to do as much as we could with the time allowed.

Since there are virtually no cars allowed on the island, golf carts are the main mode of transportation. We started our day with a golf cart rental to take a tour around the Avalon area of the island. After our 1.5 hour cruise, we ate lunch at one of the many outdoor restaurants and strolled around the downtown area. Since it is hard to stay off of 2 wheels for very long, we all rented bicycles for a ride around town and down the coastal areas for a couple of hours. Our last stop was a banana split at Big Olaf's before taking the Submarine tour to get a look at the fish and vegetation that inhabit the island area.

There is so much to do here that you couldn't possibly get it all done in a day, but if you are tight on time, and want to make a short weekend trip out of riding to the California coast and taking a day trip to Catalina, it is well worth your time. For me, being on Catalina Island made me feel like I was in another Country. You could have dropped me in there and told me I was in St. Thomas and I would have believed it. This is really a beautiful peaceful place as you will see by the pictures below. Avalon is a quaint, clean, fun little town that reminded me of a much smaller version of Maui, without the 5 hour plane flight. We will be making a return trip to Catalina soon to spend a little more time. If you do plan to make this trip, be sure and get your transportation times and hotel arranged a few weeks in advance, especially in the holiday seasons.

After a busy day, we took the 4:00pm ferry back to Long Beach and made our way down to Newport Beach for the night. After a late breakfast Saturday morning, we again rented some bicycles and peddled them to the ferry where we rode all around Balboa Island. We then came back and peddled several miles down the boardwalk to the Newport Beach pier and back enjoying the ocean breezes and the scenery along the beach. Sunday we headed South to Laguna Beach before turning inland to make on our way back to the desert to endure the rest of the Arizona summer.

For those of you looking for a nice weekend ride, this is really a good destination. It is best if you could get away and make the 5+ hour ride to the coast on a Thursday afternoon/evening, then head out to Catalina on Friday. Either stay the night or come back that evening and then ride the coast on Saturday before coming home on Sunday. Be sure and look at the beautiful pictures below.

1st Annual Rocky Point Dog Run
. For those of you that are animal lovers and have been to Rocky Point, you know the problem with the abundance of dogs down there. We go there a lot and are glad to see that Nancy Phelan has stepped up to do something about it by using the proceeds of this event to convert a motor home to a mobile spa/neuter clinic. Here is a brief story about the Rocky Point Animal Adoption Center:
The Rocky Point Animal Adoption Center was founded by Nancy Phelan. Nancy came to Rocky Point from Phoenix, Arizona and soon became an advocate for the many street dogs and cats in the city. She formed a non-profit Mexican Corporation and began taking in strays. She also has a US non-profit Corporation for tax purposes. She has had as many as 90 animals at any given time. Over 2000 animals have been adopted into loving homes. The center has two large lots - enough for 14 separate yards for the dogs. A cat house was built with an entrance to an outside screened room. The nursing moms and kittens are cared for in the main building. There are 2 yards for recovering and/or new animals. Many of these animals come to her sick and injured. There is no testing equipment to see what these animals are suffering from. Sarcoptic Mange, Parasites, Worms, Parvo, Distemper, Leukemia are just a few of the problems. For more information call Nancy at 602-412-3932. http://www.rpaac.org/

Everyone seemed to get a kick out of this trailer for the Wild Hogs Movie and a lot have an interest in doing a ride night to the movie, possibly at Westgate. I am working on putting something together now. I will let you know the details in next week's letter. Some of you might have heard about the new movie coming out on March 2nd named Wild Hogs that was filmed in New Mexico. It stars John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence and William H. Macy and is about 4 businessmen that decide to take some time from their jobs to take a motorcycle trip. The trailer is funny. Hopefully the whole movie is as good. Click Here for trailer. I might even plan a ride night to a theatre if anyone would be interested.
