Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
Well, here we are in the middle of February already with Valentines Day right in front of us. Seems like I just opened my last Christmas present. My vote is to skip the chocolate hearts this year and replace them with chrome or leather. Valentines Day also reminds us that the last of the cold weather is within sight before we March into prime time riding. Arizona Bike Week is only 7 weeks away, so check the schedule and plan for your days off.
Not only is Valentines Day coming up but it is also the week of the Westminster Dog Show. Mrs. Cyclerides is a huge dog fan and watches all 6 hours of this show every year. I have to admit, this thing is really getting big. You see it on the front pages of the USA Today, various newspapers, TV and radio. Even Scott Pasmore on 3 TV admitted Tuesday morning to having strange dreams about dogs floating away underneath some helium balloons. He wouldn't say on the air what happened, but Cyclerides inside sources have said that the balloons popped in flight and apparently it wasn't pretty. Alrighty then Scott, maybe we should have Dr. Phil take a look at this one. My suggestion would be to cut down on the Underdog cartoons, no Alpo commercials before bedtime and refrain from sticking your head out of the window while driving. All have been known to lead to strange dog dreams by humans.
As always, when doing something that does not capture 100% of my attention, I tend to revert everything back to my love for motorcycles. As I was watching the 127th Westminster Dog Show and hearing the booming voice of announcer Mike LaFave introduce the Mastiff from the Working Group, I thought maybe we could follow that same format with motorcycle shows. As you might recall, Mike boomed out the background of the Mastiff as "one of the most important breeds still in existence, he is a foundation dog that helped create the Bulldog, the Boxer, the Great Dane, Saint Bernard and New Foundland. He has been known for centuries in England and before that in Greece and Rome. He may have originated in Tibet thousands of years ago. This is Mastiff, number six!"
Why couldn't we do that with motorcycle shows? It would instead go something like this: "The Harley-Davidson, one of the most important brands still in existence, it is a foundation brand that helped create the Yamaha, the Kawasaki, the Honda, the Suzuki and the Goldwing. Harley has been known for a century in the United States and abroad. And may have originated in the mind of Walter Davidson's ancestors in Tibet thousands of years ago." This is Harley-Davidson, Number six!
And when you change groups it would sound like this. And now I would like to introduce the Sport Cruiser Group. "The V-Rod, a crossover breed that has it's beginnings from the sport bike. 21st Century lore has it that a Harley Deuce and a Yamaha V-Max had an intimate moment during a ride in Japan and the V-Rod was born. As with all new breeds introduced into the club, the V-Rod will not be accepted as its own category in the club until there is acceptance by the public and continued breeding of other models."
So next year when you are watching the 128th Westminster Dog Show you can imagine what words Mike LaFave would use to describe your motorcycle. And by the way Scott, you might want to move the dog bones away from the protein bars, you must have gotten them mixed up a time or two to come up with a dream like that.

Day Ride that I talked about last week is now on the site.

I mentioned last week how uncomfortable
it was for me to report on motorcyclists who have perished on our roads. We have lost way too many of our friends
over the last couple of years. Many of you might have heard on the news last week about the Fire Chief of Buckeye,
Bill Lanford, who was killed while riding his motorcycle. His friends and co-workers said that he loved
to ride his new Firefighter edition Road King, his grin was so big he would be a one man pest exterminator
riding through Buckeye. At 48 years young Bill was taken from us tragically while riding his bike through
Vulture Mine road coming back from Wickenburg. The preliminary accident report revealed the possibility
that he may have lost control coming around a corner and slid into the oncoming lane. At which point
he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. He was wearing a helmet although, the injuries were so severe that
he was pronounced on-scene. Bill leaves his beautiful wife, two wonderful daughters, his first
Grand Daughter less than a year old, a number of brothers and sisters and hundreds of professional and personal
friends. My Boss and buddy is going to be dearly missed. May God
Bless his Wife, Family and Friends with strength and comfort to get through this very difficult time.
Last week's poll. The question was: Are you a Male or Female and ride your own bike? The numbers are in. Out of 929 votes, there were 725 Male (78%) and 204 Female (22%). That is just about exactly what I expected. The core of women riders seem to be growing every day. For the Women riders out there, be sure and check out the 2nd Annual Women's Riding Expo on March 9th.
This Week's Poll: I have always seen a broad range of what riders think is a good length for a casual ride. Some are a Hardtail think it would be no more than 20 miles to get to the nearest watering hole. Some think it would be to Colorado and back in a day. What do you consider to be a good length for a ride on your motorcycle? There will be several mileages for you to choose from. This will help me to pick Day Rides that will fit into your schedule.
