Weekly Update
2/10/10
Greetings Riders,
Well, if you have been looking at the national
weather news lately you will be glad if you zip code starts with the
numbers 85. The East coast is getting pelted with record snow
falls along the East coast. In fact, I heard what I would call the
"Irony of the Year" today. It was reported on CNN and FOX that
the global warming conference that was set to start today in Washington,
D.C. was postponed due to excessive snow and frigid weather.
Now, I don't care who you are, there is some humor in that report.
Especially for those skeptical of the Global Warming story. Using the old
realtor saying, it is location, location, location. Those people are
digging out of 2 feet of snow and we are planning a motorcycle ride to
Sedona on Saturday in 70 degree weather. You gotta love good ole
AZ this time of year.
If you missed the newsletter last week, I
just want to announce once again that the Bike Night at Westgate
City Center in Glendale will start up again on Thursday, March
18th and run through June 24th. So make plans to join us on the
first night. Stay tuned to the newsletter and the Cyclerides.com
Facebook for updates. See last week's
newsletter for all the details. Click
Here. Other announcements will be coming in the
next couple of weeks. The first Motorcycles on Main in Mesa was a big
success last Friday night. Click

It is getting really close to some superb riding
here in the Valley. I can feel it coming and am already planning a
few local rides for the season. Even kicking around a Cyclerides.com "Just for
the fun of it ride" for anyone who would want to get out take a ride with us. No
cost, just an unorganized ride at your own pace loop through some scenic
country to get some bikes on the road this Spring. Will let you know if I come
up with something.
Two weeks ago I finished up Day 6 of our 2009
Road Trip that took us from Whitefish, MT. to Great Falls, MT. This week I will
report on 2009 Road Trip Day 7.
We awoke in Great Falls, MT. to dark skies and
light rain. So this time it was a no brainer to start out with the
rain gear on. That's good, because that will automatically keep you from making
a bad decision. And it was one of those days that as you traveled rain would be
a threat throughout the day. Needless to say, we got pretty good getting in and
out of it.
Since we had lost a few hours the day before due
to the ignition switch going out, we decided to head to Yellowstone National
Park and then spend the night in Jackson, WY. But as you know, when
riding, the best laid plans don't always work out like you think they should. So
to make some time we took I-15 South to a little town called Boulder, Mt. and
then headed South on a narrow 2 lane road down to I-90. Just what the doctor
ordered, a great little back road through some farming country in
Montana. As an old farm boy from Kansas, it was great to see some Alfalfa
that came up
to my knees and wild antelope
roaming the fields. We even stopped so that we could walk out into the
field. Took me back about 40 years. Loved it.
From there we scooted across I-90 about 40 miles
to Hwy. 291 to go through Big Sky and then on down to the
West entrance to Yellowstone
National Park. We had traveled most of Yellowstone over the years
but had never been through the West entrance or the SW part of the park. So this
was our opportunity to experience that part of the park. I've said it before,
Yellowstone is a nice place to ride through, but in my opinion, it is a bit
overrated as a pure riding area. There are MANY areas that we have been that are
a lot more memorable than Yellowstone, but this is a marquis name that deserves
at least one pass through it. One road that we found this time that was really
pretty is a little side road called the Firehole Canyon Rd. that is just to the
West of 191 as it turns South. This road takes you through a beautiful canyon
next to a stream.
Don't miss this one.
Our next stop on 191 in Yellowstone was Old
Faithful. We had seen this before, but it is always a nice nostalgia stop.
There are bigger geysers right in the area, but none more famous.
And make sure to see go into the Old Faithful Inn to see the construction
of this old hotel. Again, well worth the stop just to see the wood
that they used to construct this old building. Quite impressive.
After a quick stop here we were now on a race against time to make it to
Jackson, WY by around 6:30 to try and grab a hotel before other travelers would
be doing the same thing.
But as I said before, there are always surprises
and we got one here. There was about 40 miles of major road
construction heading South out of the park that was mostly gravel road. And very
bad gravel road at that. This moved us along at about 15 miles per hour burning
precious daylight that we wanted to have going through the Tetons
into Jackson. If you have done much motorcycle riding in this area, you know
that you don't want to be on the roads, particularly on a motorcycle during
feeding time for the deer and elk. So we kept our eyes wide open for the animals
crossing the road as we finally rolled into Jackson
at about 8:45pm instead of our projected 6:30. But the good news was we made it
safe and had little trouble getting a room for the night.
All in all, it was a good day, but one of those
that kind of wore you out with the rain and road construction. But
we did get some good pictures of Yellowstone and the Tetons that I think you
might enjoy. Day 8 will take us from Jackson, WY through the Flaming Gorge to
Utah.
