Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
Well, Super Bowl Madness has officially hit our City. It is tough to drive anywhere in town without seeing some evidence of the big game coming to Glendale this Sunday. And the media coverage has been second to none. When I saw all of the reporters waiting at the airport for the Patriots to land, I knew it was going to be wall to wall coverage for the next 7 days and beyond. Personally, I have no affiliation with either team, but I guess I would be rooting for the Patriots to cap a perfect season and that way we won't have to hear about the 1972 Dolphins anymore. One thing for sure is that the Super Bowl has to be a big shot in the arm for the local economy. I'll bet the motorcycle dealers are hoping some of that comes their way.
As you saw from the newsletter last week, motorcycle sales are temporarily down, but the idea of riding a motorcycle has probably never made more sense from both an environmentally and financial point of view. Ron Arieli of TEAM Arizona motorcycle training emailed me last week with some interesting statistics as it pertains to the benefits of riding a motorcycle:
1. According to the USDOT motorcycles consume 56% less fuel per mile traveled than 4 wheel transportation. (In my experience, it is a lot more than that.)
2. Studies show that if Americans would use a motorcycle or scooter instead of a car on 1 out of every 10 commutes, we would save an estimated 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline per year. (That savings by itself would probably go a long way in lessening our dependence on foreign oil)
3. If Americans would utilize Motorcycles or Scooters for up to 10% of the mileage currently traveled in cars, trucks and SUVs the savings would be as follows: Savings of 14.4-18.4 million gallons of oil per day, decrease of 325 million lbs of carbon dioxide emissions per day,
4. On average, motorcycles get between 40-75 mpg and even while gas prices are passing $3 per gallon most motorcycles can be filled up for 12-15$. If you would do the math, you would find that the purchase of a motorcycle or scooter can often pay for itself in a few years or less with fuels savings alone. (Guys, you can use this info. nugget as leverage to buy that new bike)
5. Faster commutes: With a motorcycle or scooter you can travel in the HOV lanes which as you know would save hours per week in travel time.
6. If absolute facts were not enough, here are some other interesting trends:
More women are choosing to get behind the handle bars and more people are realizing riding can be a stress reliever.
Vespa feels so strongly about increasing the use of 2 wheeled transportation and what it can do for our environment and economy that they even coined their own phrase, "Vespanomics". Here is their definition:
Meaning: the ecological, economic, and personal satisfaction one achieves after buying a Vespa scooter. Vespanomics promotes embracing motor scooters as an alternative form of transportation to reduce oil consumption, pollution and traffic congestion.
Additional meanings: 1. A feeling of total exhilaration; consistent with riding a stylish, high performance Vespa. 2. The incomparable level of satisfaction that can only come from helping the environment while also saving a boatload of money on gas. Origin: A union of the words Vespa and economics. Related words: Vespanomic, adj, vespanomically, adv
You could obviously insert your own word in place of Vespa, ie, Harleynomics, Hondanomics, Yamahanomics, etc. The point is, If America is serious about ending its "oil addiction," consumers must be encouraged to curb their rampant use of gasoline for transportation purposes - by far the largest and fastest growing use of oil. In order to meet the President's goal of reducing America's addiction to oil, consumers will need to change their attitudes and behaviors regarding personal transportation in ways that offer the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption and environmental impact. One obvious way to do that is to utilize the tools that we might already have in our garage. See more facts and information on www.vespanomics.com .
Almost seems like a no-brainer doesn't it? We can do something we love to do, save money and be a benefit to the environment as well. The only issue is sacrificing that perfect hairdo or maybe be inconvenienced by the heat or cold. But as gas prices rise, attitudes might change when it comes to how we commute. If you look at the high use of motorcycles and scooters in several other countries around the world, you could possibly tie it to the cost of gas in those locations.
In order to see an increased amount of motorcycle use, existing owners will need to take a look at how much their current bike is used for transportation and new riders will have to take a look at a scooter or a motorcycle as a viable means of transportation as well. To encourage the latter, Ron from TEAM Arizona Motorcycle Training has developed an introductory riding class. If you know someone that wants to ride, but is unsure if riding is for them, they can kind of do a "try before you buy" program. Similar to taking that ride in an airplane before you decide if you want to take lessons. Ron has developed an affordable, accessible hands on introduction to two wheels coupled with continuing safety training and education regarding the benefits of scooters and motorcycles for only $85.00. With this program, you can get a better idea if riding might be for you. If you know a friend, neighbor or relative that might be considering riding, print out the following flyer and give to them. When you call to reserve your spot in the class, tell them Cyclerides.com sent you and save an additional $10. Click Here for the Introduction to Motorcycling flyer.
With the price of gas over $3.50 per gallon in California and oil rising by the day, something is going to have to give. Maybe as a group, we can help the cause by commuting a couple of times per month on our bikes and walk in the door with a smile on our face. Ron has personally instituted this plan of riding more and has been using his bike 3 to 4 times per week. He is reportedly saving over $350 per month on gas. That is enough to pay for a new bike!
