Weekly Update
1/24/07
Greetings Riders,
Well, the last couple of
weekends have not provided very good weather for riding in the Phoenix
area. Unless of course you enjoy riding in rain and 45 degrees. If this
is the case, then you were truly in HOG Heaven this past Saturday. Using the
same analogy that I used to use for golf, there are so many good days to ride in
our area, why ride on the bad days?
With this in mind, Mrs. C.
and I decided to take in the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction. Being
a resident of the Valley for over 25 years, we have seen this grow from
a small boutique type of auction to a world renowned classic car
spectacle. It all started in the late 60's on a chance meeting of Russ Jackson
and Tom Barrett. As the story goes, it seems Mr. Barrett was selling his 1933
Cadillac V-16 Town Car, and it appears Mr. Jackson was interested. "Appears" may
be the operative word, as a deal was never struck. However, the beginning of a
lifelong friendship and partnership was firmly cemented between the two
gentlemen. In 1971, the two combined their talents to present the first classic
car auction, featuring classics from their individual collections. Barrett's
Mercedes 770 Phaeton chiseled industry headlines, selling for $153,000 and
grabbing the attention of collectors worldwide. The sale and the inaugural event
thrust the Barrett-Jackson name into international prominence.
Fast forward 36
years, Tom and Russ have now passed on and the company is being
run by Craig Jackson guiding it to new heights never before seen in
the collector car industry. From those humble beginnings of trading a few cars
in a personal collection it has grown into a week long motorsports event
attracting car collectors from all over the world as well as over 250,000 spectators. The 2007
Barrett-Jackson auction was the most successful collector car auction in
American history. Collectors spent nearly $112,000,000 snapping up 1271 total
cars while being featured on SPEED Channel with 40 hours of live coverage.
With the astronomical
prices that some of these cars are bringing, watching the auction is some of the
best reality TV that you can get. You will see in real
time bidders go back and forth for hundreds of thousands if not millions of
dollars with the crowd cheering them on at every milestone until one of
them snaps back into reality. We just happened to be standing in the bidding
area when Carroll Shelby's own personal 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra was on the block
with Carroll himself on stage
presiding over the sale of his car. When the car was bid at $1,000,000 the crowd
let out a roar of approval and repeated that encouragement even
louder 4 more times as bidding on the car reached $5,000,000. The buzz in the room was at a fever pitch as the
gavel came down finally selling the car to Ron Pratt from Chandler, AZ for a
record 5 million dollars. He is the same guy who bought the Futureliner bus last
year for $4,000,000 and the Bonneville the year before for
$2,000,000. I understand he has one of the finest collections in the world.
Eleven million dollars on 3 cars might just earn you that distinction.
The Shelby was the
highlight of the auction in terms of price, but the highlight
for me was the CNN "Warrior One"
Hummer that was "overhauled" by Chip
Foose on the TV program "Overhaulin" following a CNN tour of duty in Iraq.
CNN News Anchor Wolf Blitzer, (who was in
attendance at the auction) and others used the vehicle in Kuwait and Iraq
where it even took on enemy fire. Proceeds from the sale of the CNN Hummer were
to be donated to The Fisher House Foundation, which builds "comfort homes" for families of
hospitalized military personnel. They provide "a home away from home" that
enables family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful
time, during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.
This again, was good
reality TV. Two men, Dave Liniger, founder of Re/Max
Realty and Dave Ressler, a businessman from North Dakota were locked in a battle
to buy the Hummer. Bidding slowed down at the $600,000 mark. At that point there
was a break in the bidding and Craig Jackson had all of the soldiers in the
crowd stand up to be honored. The bidding resumed and quickly went to $1,000,000
garnering an uproar of approval from the crowd. This is when Dave
Ressler turned to Liniger, put his arms around him and said, "Hey, you buy
the car, you get the car, and I'll add $250,000 to it. Another random act
of kindness for our troops. For something that has completely gone past the
common collector's means, with the average car going for over
$100,000, the Barrett Jackson Auction has really caught the interest
of the viewing public.
After the Hummer was sold,
and the bevy of reporters had cleared out, I introduced myself to Dave
Liniger and asked him if the Hummer was going to stay in the Phoenix area. He
said that it would be going back to Denver and then would tour military bases
around the country. I then asked if he would be willing to bring it back
to Phoenix to lead the Cyclerides.com Hearts to Heroes Ride and he said he would
be very interested in doing that. So at this time we are working on
making the arrangements to bring the CNN Warrior One back to be the Honorary
Grand Marshall of our ride.
Hearts To Heroes
2007 Date Announced!
At this time, I am excited to
announce that Saturday, April 14th will be the date for the 2007
Cyclerides.com Hearts To Heroes Ride. This year's ride is shaping up to
be the best Hearts To Heroes ride ever. The ride will again start at Christ's
Church of the Valley located at 67th Ave. and Happy Valley Rd. Sign in will be
from 8am - 9:30am. At 9:30am the program will begin inside the 3000 seat
auditorium of the Church where we will honor our Veterans of past wars as well
as our current enlisted Men and Women. There will be singing, video
and I am working on doing a "Live Interview Via Satellite" with a platoon of
Soldiers in Iraq that will be shown on the 20' screens inside the Church. Our
fighting men and women will be able to see first hand that we here at
home do support them and wish them well.
After the program at the Church, we
will be led by the CNN Warrior One Hummer and
ride to Phoenix International Raceway where all of the bikes will
do a lap around the track before parking
in the infield where we will have music, speakers and skydivers carrying a flag
from the 5 branches of service followed by the American Flag. I am currently
working on a huge end party at a great location where there will
music, food and drink available. I will be announcing that soon. Check back
on the front page of www.cyclerides.com for the flyer
that you can print and distribute to all of your riding friends.
