I didn't get a chance to do much riding this weekend, but
I did get out to take a quick ride down to the World of Wheels at the Stadium. It wasn't one of their better shows,
but I did get a chance to do some catching up with Vinnie, from OCC fame who was in town doing a personal
appearance for World of Wheels. I hadn't talked with him since the last event we did for them in 2006,
so we had some catching up to do. In fact, I was shocked when I watched the last episode of the year and was
really anxious to get the story about him leaving the show and OCC.
As a lot of you may or may not know, the last show of last season, Vinnie suddenly resigned from his position as Master Mechanic, parts designer and general right hand man to Jr. at OCC. The end of that show was him saying his goodbyes, packing his tool box and listening to Mikey whisper that he wishes he could get out of there too. All of the drama from Vinnie leaving on that episode really intrigued me, and knowing some of the behind the scenes as I do from doing 3 events with them, I was interested to hear his side of the story. It was tough to talk as people were coming up for autographs, so we decided to walk over to Margaritaville for dinner to have some time to talk without so many interruptions. That helped, but by the amount of people that stopped by the table to say hi to him and voice their regret for him leaving the show, it showed that he still has a lot of fans out there.
As it turns out, he had just had it with the mandatory 50 hours per week, low pay and all of the drama around the shop. Vinnie had been wanting to
leave for some time, saved up some money and decided to pull the plug last August. I, like probably most of you
thought he was making the big bucks by being on a top rated cable show. But apparently the only thing flowing around
OCC was water in the "Flow Jet", money didn't flow well from the top. Sr. was filling his garage with
muscle cars and the rest of the cast was status quo. In fact, he probably would have done just as well wrenching
at a local Harley dealer.
So after 5 years of hoping to advance his career at OCC, he realized it wasn't going to happen there and decided to leave the drama behind and start his own shop a mere 5 miles from where he had spent the last 5 years working as the go to guy when things got tough and making Paul Jr. look good. Vinnie is now owner and operator of V-Force Customs, http://www.vforcecustoms.com/ in Rock Tavern, NY. and will be unveiling his new creation at Bruce Rossmeyer's Destination Daytona during Daytona Bike Week.
The news you probably don't know yet is that Cody left OCC just 30 days later and has gone to work for Vinnie at V-Force. Chances are, you won't see him leaving the show on the air. Apparently, the fan reaction to the way Vinnie left the show was less than enthusiastic, so I doubt Sr. is going to want to field all of the phone calls and hate email that was generated by the way that Vinnie was sent packing. Who knows, it might just be that they send Cody to the storage room for a fender and he never returns. We will find out when the first show of the new season starts this Thursday night on TLC at 10pm on Cox cable channel 63.
It was good to visit with Vinnie again and see that he is happy to be out of the madness and on his own. You never know, you might find him starring in his own show sometime down the road. He really doesn't know what his future holds for him and is just concentrating on getting this new chapter in his life started. He is a really a nice and humble guy. With the lack of interest in custom bikes these days I am a little concerned, but I certainly wish him well and suggested that he start his builds with a cool bagger.
Help Ribbon Update
In the November 21st newsletter I talked about the problem these days in knowing
when to help a rider that is stopped on the side of the road. (To refresh,
Here to read that letter) With the increased use of cell
phones and baggers, it seems as though we have come up with more reasons to stop including layering, checking voice
mail or to grab a snack out of the bags. But with that added convenience comes confusion for riders going by that
would want to help if there was a problem. The issue now is that there are way more riders on the side of the road,
and when you stop to help, there are no problems. It has created some confusion and I'm afraid that eventually
we are going to be conditioned not to even bother to stop. So I came up with a clear signal that a rider would
need help, asked you to vote. It was a 2 to 1 vote to tie a yellow ribbon to your left handlebar to signal
that you need help.
Those yellow ribbons have now been printed and are being shipped to some local motorcycle dealerships here in the Phoenix, Tucson and surrounding areas. They are a plastic ribbon 3 inches wide and 30 inches long. On the left side of the ribbon it says "If you need help, tie to left handlebar". Click Here to View. If you are in need of help, simply tie the yellow ribbon to your handlebar or mirror LIKE THIS. Riders coming by will soon recognize this yellow ribbon and will hopefully become the universal sign for help. You can roll this up to 1 inch by 3 inches to easily store in the saddle bags, tool kit, or under your seat, or tape it under your gas tank. I ordered 2400 of these help ribbons to get the program started and am encouraging all dealerships to get their own ribbons made to continue to make this the standard for signaling help, and would avert the inconvenience on those riding by that would stop for no reason.
Initially, the ribbons will be available for you to pick up this weekend at all of the Harley Dealers and Ridenow Powersports stores in Phoenix and Tucson. There will only be about 100 ribbons per store. I will be getting them to other dealers over the next couple of weeks.
