Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
1/14/09

Greetings Riders,

Well, we are now half way through our first month of 2009 and I am still putting '08 on my checks and actually just had to change the year on this letter to '09. Hopefully by the end of the month I will have finally broken the '08 habit. There is another habit that I haven't broken and that is the urge get on the bike when we start having the Chamber of Commerce weather that we are seeing this week. For you back East you might want to skip this line, but riders in the Phoenix area are going to be looking at bright sunshine, blue skies and low to mid 70's temperatures for the next several days. The big dilemma on Sunday will be to take advantage of the 73 degrees for a nice long ride or watch the Arizona Cardinals play for their chance to go to the Super Bowl at 1:00 pm. I suspect there will probably a little bit of both that day. Good luck to the Cardinals on Sunday! It would be cool to have them in the Big Game.

I have written about this in the past as it pertains to safety issues but now those of you that don't have the motorcycle endorsement on your license, and you know who you are, are really going to be taking a risk if you get stopped by the police. Currently, it is law that when a person is found to be driving/riding on a Suspended or Revoked License, that their vehicle is TOWED and kept for 30 days, or until the owner comes to the impound yard with proof of their license being reinstated.  This would include proof of ownership via registration, title and insurance etc.

You will notice that in the existing law it is if your license is Suspended or Revoked, you will be towed. Here is the bad news for you that do not have that "M" on your drivers license. The new bill that is being introduced by DPS will Revise this statue to include the TOWING of anyone driving or riding a vehicle WITHOUT THE PROPER ENDORSEMENT. This would include motorcycles and semi trucks.

So the days of having to leave your bike on the side of the road, have someone come ride it home for you, or riding it home yourself after the cop drives away are about to be over. When this revision is put into law, if you get stopped on your motorcycle for ANY reason and the police discover that you do not have that coveted "M" endorsement on your drivers license, your bike will be immediately hoisted onto a truck and taken to the yard to sit outside amongst all of the other vehicles that have been towed. According to DPS and the statute, you will be given a "Hearing" date when ticketed and towed, and if you get your endorsement prior to your hearing date, you will be given the proper paperwork to get your motorcycle released to you immediately.  If you cannot get your endorsement prior to your "hearing" date, you can ask for an extension so that you can.

I know that most of you reading this today have your motorcycle endorsement. But I'm sure all of us know at least one person that is riding today that has not "gotten around to it" yet. The good news is that you have a few months to get it done. By the time this goes through all of the necessary legal paths of the State Legislature, 6 months will probably pass. But if you procrastinate past that time, you might experience that terrible day when you are stopped for something, not have your endorsement, and then see your beloved motorcycle being hauled away leaving you standing on the side of the road waiting for a ride home. Not to mention the fine and the tow charges that you will be forced to pay to get your bike back.

The bottom line is that there is really no good reason not to have your motorcycle endorsement on your license. The absolute quickest way to get it is to go to the MVD, take and pass a 25 question test, then go to the MVD riding skills test and pass a few technical riding skills like braking, going through some cones, etc. (Click Here for the MVD Motorcycle Operator Manual)Then you get signed off on for your endorsement. The other option is to just go take a 3 Day Motorcycle Rider Training course at your local Harley Dealer or TEAM Arizona Motorcycle Training. There are many locations around the Valley.

If you have questions about the process, you can contact the Arizona MVD at 602-255-0072 or Click Here for the location of the MVD nearest you. Get 'er Done before it is too late.

A video came to me this week that I think is fantastic. If you love music, you will love this video. An award winning director used the song "Stand By Me" as his palet to inspire, connect and bring peace to the world through music. He then went literally around the world and had street performers sing and play this song on their instruments. He then edited it all together and ended up with a fantastic inspirational video and song. At the 1:56 mark of the video, this young man's voice in the Congo will raise the hair on your arms. GREAT EFFORT by this guy. Click Here to View. To learn more about the behind the scenes of the project, http://www.playingforchange.com/.

Here is one of those "in the wrong place at the wrong time" videos. This had to hurt. Click Here to View.

Don't know if this is some sort of illusion or it is just one stupid guy trying to get some play on the internet. But it looks real to me. Click Here to view.

Have you ever had anyone tell you that you "Don't know Jack Schitt"? Watch this video and you will be able to confirm that you actually do. Click Here to View.

Until Next Week,
Blessings and Safe Riding To All,
