Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
12/8/04

Greetings Riders,

Well, Good ole' dry Phoenix, Arizona has been doing a good imitation of Seattle lately. Seems like Mother Nature has been reserving the weekends for cold weather and rain. We need the rain, but the unfortunate part is that the Toy Runs were hit pretty hard with the cold and the all out rain on Sunday. But all that did was prove to me something that I already knew. Motorcycle riders are some of the toughest and most giving group of people I know.

Those riders planning on doing the Toys To Kids ride on Saturday were greeted with overcast skies and temperatures in the mid 40's for their start of the day, and it didn't get much better than that. Even with the cold and the accurate prediction of rain in the afternoon, we still had almost 700 riders show up for the ride that morning. A great turnout considering the weather. We all thank you for turning out and supporting this great ride. I knew there were at least 150 kids waiting at Rawhide for some toys and I personally thank you for not letting them down. You are the best!

After 3 hours of sign-in and Santa being delivered by helicopter, we started our chilly 30 mile ride to deliver our toys to the waiting kids at Rawhide promptly at 11:00am led by the Sheriff's Department and of course Santa. Being one to always error on not having enough clothing when it is cold outside, I elected to not wear the jacket and gloves for the ride and went with only the sweatshirt. Not a good idea. Needless to say I was frozen by the time I got there and hoping that they had the heat cranked up inside. As we walked closer to the Pavilion I could hear the kids screaming and yelling every time a rider walked by and dropped off some toys. So I knew things were already going well on this end.

One of the highlights of this ride for me is watching the interaction between the riders and the kids. It is so heartwarming watching the outstretched arms of the kids to the riders, wanting to shake hands and greet them as they walk by the front of the stage to drop off their toys. And of course, the riders are more than happy to oblige as they are being cheered as they walk by. It is so cool to be able to show that motorcycle riders are great people and want to be a part of something like this. Every couple of minutes screams would erupt as the children showed their appreciation when riders would bring bags of candy and throw it them.

Once most of the riders arrived, a couple of the band members from CTS had their own daughters sing us a Christmas song. After that, CTS brought out the stools and had their own version of acoustic Christmas "unplugged" to sing a few songs with the kids. Then they invited a group of aspiring singers on the stage to serenade the rest of the crowd. CTS did a great job of interacting with the kids and entertaining the riders. It was a very special part of the day. Thanks to Jeff and the rest of the band for a great job.

After that came the part of the day that I call "controlled chaos". This is when the kids are told that they can finally tear into the piles of toys and pick any 3 toys that they desire. I know if I was 10 years old and I saw that remote controlled Harley F-150 laid on the pile, I would have been eager to get to the bottom of the pile and find it. It was really fun watching the kids go after their gifts, because you could just tell that they knew exactly what they were looking for. As soon as they get the toys they wanted, it is back to the carpet to inspect their new acquisition.

After some more entertainment from CTS and some time for the riders to interact with the kids, the chaperones start getting the kids rounded up for the bus ride home. For the second year I saw lots of smiles and happy faces. This might be by far the best Christmas some of these kids will have. And all of you made this possible. As I was standing there watching the kids walk out with their toys, one little boy carrying his 3 toys in his arms looked up at me and said, "You guys Rock!" That made it all worth while for me. And it is true, you guys do rock!

Thanks for braving the cold weather and the ride home in the rain to make this happen. We look forward to next year as the start and end locations will be changed. Thanks again for your support and thanks to the Sheriff's Department for all their help as well as Arizona Bike Week, Outback Productions, NP Group, the band CTS and all of the volunteers from the Superstition H.O.G. Chapter. Click Here for 128 pictures from the ride.
