Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
12/18/02

Greetings Riders,

Well, the last huge run of the year is now over. The start of the W. Steven Martin Toy Run was home to thousands of motorcycles on the morning of December 15th. The weather turned out to be great, certainly in comparison to last year's deep freeze that we rode in. As it turns out, I didn't need layers 5, 6 and 7, it was a beautiful day. The starting location in downtown Chandler was a really nice place to begin a ride. I was impressed with the old town relaxed atmosphere that this area provided. Riders were able to stroll through the streets, grab a cup of Starbuck's coffee and listen to Christmas music from W's Boom Box while waiting for the ride to begin. It was very nice. Thanks to the City of Chandler for opening up their streets to us. At 10:00 am, 8 1/2 miles of motorcycles were on the way for a 50 mile ride to the Pinal County Fairgrounds to our end ride destination with live music, food and more than enough room to park. For me it was a 190 mile day, but that was the good news. Thanks to W. Steven Martin for putting on yet another well planned and enjoyable ride.

Pictures from the Toy Run are up and can be found from a link on the front page of www.cyclerides.com and in the All Ride Photos section. I also did a video of the run that can be found on the new Video Link on the menu bar on the left side at www.cyclerides.com .

Those of you that have been using the site for a while know that I have started to concentrate on using video as a medium to share pictures and bring you expanded information about rides and charities. Since there are so many users of the site on Cox Cable internet or some other High Speed source, I think it is time to start using these capabilities more frequently. I got a lot of positive feedback on the tour of the W. Steven Martin Police Toy Warehouse. It even brought people out to ride, that normally might not have come. Even though we all like to ride and be around other motorcyclists, it is sometimes frustrating for me because I don't really know what the money is used for. Over the past several months I have tried to make this more clear to everyone who goes on these rides. I think the more we know about the cause and the better we understand where the money is going, the more interested we would be in supporting the event.

With all of that being said, I would like to introduce to you the next big ride and the video that I have done to support it. It is the City of Heroes Memorial Run scheduled for January 4th, 2003. This ride is sponsored by Rusty Childress of Childress Auto Mall, the Local Firefighters Unions and P.L.E.A. Proceeds from this ride benefits the 100 Club. Since the 100 club was formed 33 years ago, immediate cash benefits have been provided to deserving families of more than one hundred police officers, corrections officers and firefighters who gave their lives for their community. The 100 club is there to make sure that the surviving spouse and children are taken care of until their finances are taken care of. The money from this ride will be used to build a bronze and memorial for firefighter Bret Tarver who lost his life fighting a fire in March of 2000. The memorial will be placed at the Bret Tarver Elementary School on 51st Ave. N. of Indian School. Last year was the first year for this event. They raised enough money to build a bronze for Officer Marc Atkinson. You can see this at the Kids Street Park at 23rd Ave. and Hazelwood.

The video that you will see features an introduction to the ride by Scott Pasmore of 3TV, a very passionate interview with Bob Kahn, Asst. Chief with the Phoenix Fire Department who knew Bret Tarver very well, Rusty Childress at the site of the Marc Atkinson bronze from last years ride and an International Superstar as our special guest closes out the video. Can you guess who this is? Viewing this will give you a much better understanding as to what you will be riding for on January 4th, I'm sure you enjoy. Sign in will be at Childress Auto Mall, 23rd Ave. and Camelback from 8-10am. There will be a 50 mile ride ending at the Arizona International Auto Show at the Civic Center. Show entry is included with your donation. Ride end party is at Cooperstown. This is going to be a big ride. I look forward to seeing you there.

The video is programmed for both 56K dialup users and Hi Speed connections. So if you are using dialup, you can still watch it. Download time for 56k is about 8 minutes.
Click Here To See The Video.
There is also a great video that the 100 Club did to give you a better understanding for what they do. Click Here To See The 100 Club Video. I would highly recommend this great production.

Extras

I have installed a couple of new link buttons on the site at www.cyclerides.com . The first one is a Video Button that is active now. I now have 9 Original Cyclerides.com videos for you to view. I have just added the New City Of Heroes and the Video from the W. Steven Martin Toy Run on that page. These videos are programmed for both Hi Speed connections for the best quality and 56K connections. If you are running 56 K don't be afraid to watch them. They are fairly small and will download on most machines in 8-10 minutes. I also have a section for Other Videos that I will place video worth viewing in that area for you to enjoy. Go to www.cyclerides.com and click on the Video button on the left.

The other new button is the Archive Button. It is not live yet but will be used to store old newsletters and editorials like "The Wave" story and the "Why Wear Ear Plugs?" story. It will be active in a few days.

From the FYI department. Carefree has passed a noise ordinance #2002-14. This is CAREFREE not CAVE CREEK. Here is the section that pertains to decibels:

3. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle, a motorcycle, or combination of vehicles, at any time, or any condition of grade, load, acceleration or deceleration, in such a manner as to exceed eighty-five (85) dBA based on a measurement taken at a distance of twenty-five (25) feet or more from the source of the noise. For purpose of this Section, "dBA" shall mean weighted decibel, a sound level measurement unit.

Here is the section that appears be a might ambiguous:

4. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle, a motorcycle, or combination of vehicles, at any time, or under any condition of grade, load, acceleration or deceleration, in such a manner that two (2) reasonable people of normal sensory perception, not residing in the same house, one (1) of whom may be a law enforcement officer, are caused discomfort or annoyance.

Wow! Now that is wide open! I'm not going to harp on this now. I am going to wait and see how Carefree handles this. You now know the ordinance, you have been warned. From what I have been told, I don't think Cave Creek is particularly interested in following suit with this. If you think you might be in violation, my suggestion would be to not go through Carefree to get to Cave Creek until we find out how this is going to be enforced. If you are coming down Scottsdale Rd. heading North you can just turn West on Carefree Highway and go to Cave Creek Rd. and head North. I'll keep you up to date as to the progress of this new ordinance.

As for me this weekend, I guess I'd better take advantage of some of these sales and start my Christmas shopping. I'm going to get it done early this year.

Until Next Week,
Blessings and Safe Riding To All,

Barry Caraway
