Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
12/10/08

Greetings Riders,

Well, there is only 15 days till Christmas now, but there were about 100 kids this past weekend that got their toys a little early this year. Once again, loyal readers of Cyclerides.com and the generous motorcycle community came together to make a special day for these children from the Children First Academy at the Cyclerides.com Toys To Kids event. It was an absolutely beautiful December day at Westgate City Center in Glendale Arizona that gave everyone a pause from the headlines of the last couple of months. Times are tougher right now for almost everyone, but through the eyes of these 1st - 3rd graders, who really know what tough is, all was right with the world on this particular Saturday morning in early December thanks to the motorcycle riders who came bearing gifts.

The day started for us at 8:00am with the construction of the stage in the events plaza of Westgate City Center that was donated and set up by firefighters from the Peoria Fire Department. Followed by the set up of the sound system donated and operated by David Darnell of Big D's Mobile Dj's. If you need a DJ and sound system for your holiday party, call David. His equipment is outstanding. By 9am riders started showing up to deliver their toys and enjoy a buffet breakfast on the patio of Saddle Ranch Chop House.

By 11:00am most everyone had arrived and put their toys on the stack in front of the stage. This is when we invited the kids in to sit down and ponder what 2 toys they were going to pick out of the pile to take home with them. I got word about 9:00am that Elvis had injured his back Saturday morning and was not going to be able to make his performance that day. So I had to improvise with more interaction with the kids and extending the list of available songs from the Rancho Santa Fe Discovery Choir. With Elvis in traction, the entertainment  started with the choir singing 4 songs followed by Aaron, the Magician, Juggler and Unicyclist entertaining the kids and the crowd. Instead of Elvis rocking us into the gift selection as usual, the choir came back to encore with their final song reminding us of the season and to spend this time with Jesus and the ones we love. I thought it was an appropriate way to close out the show.

It was now time for the kids finally be able to go pick out their favorite toys in a pile full of excellent selections. That is the great thing about this event, the riders that participate don't skimp when it comes to bringing great gifts. After riding in on his Fat Boy, Santa got on the stage to welcome the kids and remind them that this is a time for giving and well as receiving. There are so many children that are deserving that weren't there on this day. Before the kids were allowed to pick out their gifts, we suggested that they pick out one gift for themselves and one gift for a Sister, Brother or friend that wasn't there. This is a great way to teach them that giving can be as much fun as receiving.

There were several stories involving the kids that I heard that day, but I would like to share a couple of them with you. Jim Moore was near the toys taking some pictures when he saw a young boy attempting to balance a large remote control car in his hands while trying to peek around it to locate his second toy. Jim asking him what he was trying to do and if he could help. The little boy explained that he was holding the gift that he had chosen, but now he wanted to find a better one to give to his best friend... What a wonderful gesture from such a young child.

There were other heart warming stories about some of the kids being as excited to pick out a gift that they knew that their friend, brother or sister would like, as they were to find their own. But the story that really got to me was the one of this extremely cute little girl that picked out the only bike in the whole stack. She was a little doll on this pink bike. When I saw her on it posing for the cameras, I was thinking that she really scored. Come to find out, she chose the bike because she was going to give it to her friend who did not have a bike. How about that for a giving heart at 7 years old? When I started processing that in my mind, I thought you would be hard pressed to see that kind of generosity out of kids in the mainstream schools that come from a prosperous background. I guess for the kid who has nothing, it is no big deal to give it away, but the kid that has everything wants to accumulate more. Hmmmm. There must be a parable in there someplace. I was also told that the riders who were talking with the little girl, after hearing what she was doing, promised to buy her a bike as well.

The bottom line is that this was a great story of a young girl starting to "Pay it Forward" at such an early age. I guess I was right, she really did score. This little girl was able to exercise the gift of giving that will be with her the rest of her life after delivering that bike to her friend. And with an attitude like that, she is destined for great things. God Bless her and all of the children in this world that struggle every day. At least we were able to be a part of making this a special day for these 100 kids.

I am also happy to report that the giving spirit did not end with the toys. When Saddle Ranch found out that the kids had not eaten this day, they set up a buffet with chicken fingers, fries and a drink on the patio just for them, all at no charge. Thanks to Saddle Ranch for coming through and being a part of this event.

The event was now officially over. Most of the riders went to catch the "Big Air" stunt riders show at 12:30 and for me it was time to start the cleanup and pack up the additional toys. Some of the toys were taken by the Peoria Fire Dept. and will be given to 100 struggling families that have been identified through community outreach at an event later this month. The others will be distributed by me to the crisis centers throughout the Valley including the West Valley Child Crisis and Salvation Army Crisis on E. Van Buren.

Once again, I want to thank all of you that took time out of your day to show up to the Cyclerides.com Toys to Kids event with your gifts and support for these children who have it tougher than most of us can even imagine. I know for a fact that it makes this one day just a little bit better for them, and it could not be done without you.

Thanks also goes out to everyone to offered to help and donate for this event, including Paul Yaffe from Bagger Nation for bussing the kids, David Darnell with Big D's Mobile Dj's, Aaron the Entertainer, Rick Picard and the Peoria Fire Dept. for the stage, Saddle Ranch for feeding the kids and providing the buffet and Westgate City Center for allowing us to use this fantastic facility to hold this event. Thanks also to Chuck Franklin for driving up the big yellow truck and unloading $600 worth of toys and clothing for the kids. And a big THANK YOU from me for your support in all Cyclerides.com events. Without your loyalty, it would not be possible.

There were several photos taken of this event. I have posted to separate galleries for you to look at. One gallery is ones that I took and the other is by Rusty Childress of Main Event Imaging, who is an international award winning photographer. He takes excellent pictures using a variety of lenses. Rich Sporski also took a lot of pics that I have yet to get through. Those will be posted later. Thanks to all who took pics.
