Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
12/13/17

Greetings Riders,

If you missed the newsletter last week with the story about the proposed lane splitting legislation for Arizona, Click Here to View.

Last week I did an article about the
proposed lane splitting legislation for Arizona. In that letter I had a survey that you take that simply said: Do you want to see the law changed to ALLOW lane splitting in Arizona? Yes or No. The survey results were an overwhelming YES with 72% in favor of changing the law to allow lane splitting in Arizona. The survey is still open. If you didn't vote last week, Click Here to vote. There were also 123 comments that came along with the voting.

Here are 12 of the comments for and against:

*Growing up in LA where I learned to ride splitting lanes in LA traffic was the only way you could get anywhere! It's also the SAFEST way for a motorcycle to travel on freeways and in stop and go traffic.
*But I would only do it if traffic was completely stopped and it was a very hot day. Otherwise I would tough it out with the cars. My main concern is that car drivers would see it as unfair and get an bad attitude towards motorcycles.
*I wouldn't do it even if it passed. Too dangerous
*I would like to hear pros and cons about riding on the shoulders. I feel lane splitting is far to dangerous.
*As CA has found, lane splitting helps move traffic along.
*Safety is your choice
*At low speeds of <25, with driver education and awareness.
*I would also like to see the law changed so that motorcyclists could travel on the shoulder to pass stopped traffic on major highways.
*I probably won't do it myself, but don't want to restrict that option for others. Also think AZ drivers will not like it, so I'm afraid of reprisals.
*Absolutely NOT! Most ridiculous Motorcycle law I have ever heard of. Californians I know hate motorcyclists because of it. Scraped and scratched car doors, antennas and mirrors knocked off. Come on, are you kidding, most motorcyclists have all the experience just to ride between the lines in their own lanes let alone ride on a yellow lines between 2 lines of cars without damaging the cars or their bikes. I will never support this law and will never use it.
*I have ridden well over a million miles during my lifetime and continue to add them on at the rate of about 30k per year. I cut my teeth in CA and have never had a problem. Common sense is the key to riding a motorcycle and that must also be utilized when splitting lanes.
*I've had occasion to ride in CA where it is legal. Absolutely terrifying. I'm not a timid rider, but lane splitting is a direct route to organ donor, far as I'm concerned. All you need is one car to change lanes unexpectedly, or, God forbid, open his door, or a pickup with extended mirrors, and you're going down. No thanks.

After last week's letter another bill was introduced to allow lane splitting, but with the additional feature that you must be wearing a helmet to do so. Some fear that this bill would be a pre-cursor to a full blown helmet law in Arizona. I will keep you informed as to the progress of these bills as they go through the legislative process in January of 2018.

The other survey that I had in the newsletter was choosing which day to have the Cyclerides.com Bike Night at Westgate Entertainment District. The questions was: Do you prefer the Cyclerides.com Bike Night at Westgate Entertainment District to be on Thursday Night or Friday Night? The results show that 74% of those who responded chose Friday night as their choice. With that overwhelming vote in mind, we are going to focus on having bike night on Friday nights. Stay tuned to the newsletter on starting date.

Thanks to all who voted in both of these surveys. It helps all of us to get a better picture of what people are thinking about different topics. I will be using surveys more in the future.

Next week I will be doing a story on my visit to the Sky Harbor Gallery entitled "Art of the Ride" featuring Custom built motorcycles, Paintings and Photograph. Located in Terminal 4 on the East end of Level 3. It was very interesting and something you should visit if you are going through Terminal 4 over the holidays.

Please Ride Safe!
