Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
11/8/06

Greetings Riders,

Well, the mid term elections are done and we should all be glad of that. I don't know how many more days of the negative campaigning I could take. It seemed like the worst ever for that strategy. Due to the fallout of less than stellar progress in the Iraq war, this election cycle has provided us with a new cast of characters that will try their hand at governing in Washington. Should be an interesting couple of years as the new team takes over. We also have a busy week right here in our area as NASCAR fans make their trek to PIR, motorcycle riders make their trek to Rocky Point and the newly elected politicians make their trek to Washington. And who do we have to thank for all of these Freedoms? If you guessed our Veterans, you would be correct. Veterans Day is also this weekend, and without them, we wouldn't have to worry about elections, NASCAR or motorcycle rides, because there wouldn't be any. So if you see a Veteran or current serviceman this week, give them a big "Thank You".

Most of you know that November 11th is Veterans Day, a day set aside as a government holiday to honor Veterans of all Wars. But, do you know the history of Veterans Day, formerly "Armistice Day"? Since we all owe a debt of gratitude to the Veterans that have served to defend our Country, I thought we should have a better understanding of how this day began. On November 11th, 1918, the Germans signed the Armistice, an order was issued for all firing to cease at 11am; so the hostilities of the First World War ended. This day was set aside to reflect and remember the sacrifices men and women made during World War I in order to ensure peace. The first official celebration was on November 11th, 1919. Veterans who survived the war marched in parades and were hometown heroes. Ceremonies were held and speeches were made. World War 1 was called ‘the war to end all wars’ because everyone hoped there would never be another one.

Almost 20 years later in 1938, Congress voted Armistice Day a federal holiday.
Unfortunately the very next year, in 1939, World War II began. This ended the theory of no more wars. In Emporia, Kansas, on November 11, 1953, instead of an Armistice Day program, there was a Veterans' Day observance.  Ed Rees, of Emporia, was so impressed that he introduced a bill into the House to change the name to Veterans' Day. The name was changed to Veterans' Day by Act of Congress on May 24, 1954.  In October of that year, President Eisenhower called on all citizens to observe the day by remembering the sacrifices of all those who fought so gallantly, and through rededication to the task of promoting an enduring peace.  The President referred to the change of name to Veterans' Day in honor of the servicemen of all America's wars.

Due to the 11:00am ceasefire of World War 1, and the signing of the Armistice, the American Legion started observing Veterans Day at the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month of November. This is the day that we can at least take a couple of minutes to stop, and honor those that have fought for and that have lost their lives in the many wars this country has fought to maintain our freedoms to have elections, to freely go to NASCAR and take motorcycle rides to our chosen destinations.

On November 11, 1999 an extraordinary man named Terry Kelly was in a Shoppers Drug Mart store in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the store’s PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us. Terry was impressed with the store’s leadership role in adopting the Legion’s “two minutes of silence” initiative. He felt that the store’s contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable. When eleven o’clock arrived on that day, an announcement was again made asking for the “two minutes of silence” to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.

Terry’s anger towards the father for trying to engage the store’s clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was channeled into a beautiful song called, “A Pittance of Time”. Terry also made an emotional video that perfectly illustrates the words of the song.

We all owe a debt of gratitude to our Veterans of past wars as well as our Men and Women that are in combat right now. No matter what the politics are of the war that we are currently in, as a Country, may we never turn our backs on those that are wearing the uniform of the United States of America ever again. These service Men and Women need our support while they are there, when they return and continue to honor them as Veterans. If you do nothing else to honor our Veterans this weekend, I would highly encourage you to take 5 minutes to watch this video by Terry Kelly called "Pittance of Time" and take to heart the words of this song. It really brings home the meaning of Veterans Day. It is only a 3mb file, so anyone should be able to watch it. Click Here for Video.
