Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
11/4/09

Greetings Riders,

Well, it is now November 4th and it appears that Summer is just not wanting to let go in the Phoenix area as evidenced by the posting of the low 90's as of yesterday. While that is not terrible, I'm sure that a lot of us wouldn't mind suffering some mid 70's for a few weeks. Even though it is a little warm, it does extend the premium riding season around here and will make for great riding for those going to Rocky Point this weekend or taking part in the many charity events. Warm days also make for great riding nights this time of year. If you haven't done so, check out one of the bike nights on Wednesday or Thursday nights. Click Here.

The subject of last week's newsletter was how to keep warm when riding. You won't be needing any of those tips for the next week or so, but believe me, that time is not far off and you will be glad you were thinking about this ahead of time. I had tons of responses from my request for keeping my hands and feet warm when riding. So if I have not responded to you yet, I appreciate all the tips of how to keep warm. It is great to have you share your ideas and expertise gathered from many years of riding. There were many good ideas including: electric liners in mittens, Gore Tex, wool tube neck warmers, layering and even putting your foot in a plastic grocery bag before putting it in your boot.

I actually did this in Wyoming this year when my boots got soaked from rain. We stopped at the Flaming Gorge HD dealer to dry off. I put on dry socks, put my feet into a plastic HD merchandise bag and put my boot on. See Picture. My feet were as warm and dry as they could be, even though my boot was soaked. The plastic won't allow the body heat from your feet to escape, so it keeps them warm. The downside is that they can sweat. But in a pinch, with cold damp shoes, it really works!

Out of all the suggestions that I got, the one that kept coming up and was by far the #1 suggestion for keeping your hands and feet warm was the Grabber Heat Treat foot warmers that you get at your local sporting goods stores. I have never used these, but the description says: The Grabber Heat Treat foot warmer insoles fit in your shoe or boot to provide you with over 5 hours of soothing warmth beneath your feet. Simply open the package and the Warmer begins to heat up instantly when exposed to the open air. They also help to eliminate sweat and natural foot odor and are non-toxic and biodegradable. 3-pairs of insoles. $9.99. Click Here to View. You can also buy the pack that includes hand warmers and toe warmers. As cold as my hands and feet get, I will definitely be trying some of these.

Another suggestion that I got was an interesting one that did make me think. I'm not even sure if this works, but it does make a little sense. Supposedly if you should keep your torso as warm as it can be,  this will heat up the blood that will be sent to your extremities. The bottom line is, when our head, feet and hands are cold, we would probably try just about anything to get them warm.

I do have a 2 small sets of photos for you to view this week. Last weekend we did the Zoo Ride. A beautiful day for a ride and a walk around the zoo. Here are some random photos from the day including some good animal shots. Click Here For Photos.

Last Friday was also a great day to fly. I took a friend on a sight seeing tour of the lakes up to Roosevelt. There are some really good shots of the area from the air. Click Here For Photos.

This weekend we will be heading to Rocky Point for the Rally. Those of you going ride safe.

I will have photos and a new Rocky Point Rally video when we get back. In whatever you are doing, have a great weekend and ride safe!
