Weekly Update

Greetings Riders,
Whew! Last weekend was a little chilly
if you were on a motorcycle, but there were still those die-hards that got out into those 40 degree temps to deliver a much needed turkey to the shelters. Thanks also to those that came by Cocomo Joe's for the kickoff of their Sunday Bike Day. It was an excellent turnout. Everyone had good food and a good time. They are planning on live entertainment for Sunday Bike Day starting in January.
It's hard to believe Thanksgiving 2003 is already here. Seems like we were just celebrating the Millennium. I'm not sure why it is, but the older I get the more I seem to want to know about the holidays that we celebrate. At this point, I know more about the History of Harley-Davidson than I do about the days we celebrate as a Country. I brought to you the roots of Independence Day and Veteran's Day, so I thought you might want to be reminded about where Thanksgiving came from. To be refreshed in my own mind I had to go back to second or third grade and recall coloring the buckles on the Pilgrims boot or the multicolors on the Turkey tail. The focus was Pilgrims, Turkey's, Eating and that it was a time for giving thanks, but I never really focused on it's roots. To me, it meant that the countdown to Christmas had started. It was also a time to get a couple days off of school, pig out, watch football and get together with family.
But in my quest to know Why We Celebrate Thanksgiving, I once again went to Webster's and searched for the "meaning of Thanksgiving Day". Here is what I found.
Main Entry:
Thanksgiving Day
noun, Date: 1674, : a day appointed for giving thanks for divine goodness: the fourth Thursday in November observed as a legal holiday in the U.S.
When you look at how Thanksgiving first started it was in 1623 when William Bradford of the 1620 Pilgrim Colony proclaimed: "All ye Pilgrims with your wives and little ones, do gather at the Meeting House, on the hill... there to listen to the pastor, and render Thanksgiving to the Almighty God for an abundant harvest and all His blessings." Which was then followed by a feast to celebrate. Since then it was proclaimed many times by congress, George Washington in 1795 and Abraham Lincoln in 1863 as "a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens".
I looked at several entries as to the origin of Thanksgiving. So now I am up to date with the historical presence of this day. But the one thing I found that really sums it up for me at this point in my life was this poem.

How to observe Thanksgiving.

Count your blessings instead of your crosses; Count your gains instead of your losses.
Count your joys instead of your woes; Count your friends instead of your foes.
Count your smiles instead of your tears; Count your courage instead of your fears.
Count your full years instead of your lean; Count your kind deeds instead of your mean.
Count your health instead of your wealth; Count on God instead of yourself.

Happy Thanksgiving To All Of You From Mrs. C. and Me.
