Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
11/18/09

Greetings Riders,

Remember back in August when it was 110 for what seemed like the entire month, and you were asking yourself why you ever moved to Phoenix? Well, for about the last week you have gotten your answer. This is amazing mid November weather for just about anything, but particularly for motorcycle riding. This is the time of year when we start inventing excuses to take the bike out for a ride. One good excuse for all of you that are a fan of motorsports and music would be this Thursday night at Toby Keith's "I Love This Bar & Grill".

If you've had your radio on in the last week you have probably heard that the Goodguys car show is in town this weekend. This is one of the largest organized car shows in the Southwest featuring over 2000 of the best Rods, Customs, Classics and Muscle Cars thru 1972 that comes to Scottsdale every year. Since these cars will be in town with no where to go on Thursday night, Paul Yaffe of Paul Yaffe Originals fame and Troy Westerman of Borne Customs have gotten together with Toby’s to throw a cruise night to end all cruise nights! It is Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill American Ride.

This will be a motorsports extravaganza with cars and motorcycles including inviting the top 12 from the Goodguys show and all other participants, as well as appearances and displays by the top custom motorcycle builders in town that include Paul Yaffe, Jim Nasi, John Shope, Nick Trask, and Bourget. Not only that, they have invited every bike and car builder from Maricopa county to come and show off their latest customs!

I think this is going to be a really cool event because they are doing what we all have come to enjoy with the Westgate and Chandler Bike Night experiences. They are blocking parking and utilizing the street in front of Toby's to display the attendees with the Top 12 cars on one side of the street and displaying the motorcycle builders on the other. Then on the North side of Toby's will be parking for 300 more classic cars and motorcycles that will be displayed for you to view. This will be a one night cruising megafest for those who love vintage, classic and custom motorsports. "Eye Candy" for the lover of motorcycles and classic cars will be FREE and plentiful on this night. See Photos of Toby Keith's Bar & Grill.

Ok, I've talked about what is on the outside of Toby Keith's Bar & Grill. Now for you music lovers, after you had your fill of bikes and cars, go inside where they have booked top notch Valley talent like Metal Head and AC/DC tribute band Hell’s Bells as well as the clubs house band Marshall Reign to rock the house all night long! The evening’s events will be hosted by 93.3 KDKB’s Ruby Cheeks. There will be plenty of parking and all are welcome. Toby Keith's "I Love This Bar & Grill" is located in the Mesa Riverview at 1065 N. Dobson Rd in Mesa, AZ. Just off of the Loop 202 at Dobson Rd. next to the Bass Pro store. Event times are from 6pm - Close.

Make your plans to enjoy a ride on a beautiful Arizona evening while enjoying some Custom and Classic cars and motorcycles. All for free. See you there.

This weekend is also hosting another big event on Saturday. It is the Dierks Bentley Celebrity Motorcycle Ride & Jam Session. Multi-platinum country music star Dierks Bentley's lineup of artists joining his “Miles & Music for Kids” celebrity motorcycle ride and concert in his hometown of Phoenix, AZ on Sat, Nov. 21.  Joining Bentley for a post-ride jam at Tempe Marketplace will be Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers, Jessi Colter, Jimmy Wayne and Stoney LaRue, All proceeds will benefit Phoenix Children's, a Children's Miracle Network Hospital. See details below.

The New Hoover Dam Bypass

Being only a short 4 hour ride to Las Vegas, a lot of us have taken the ride to Vegas for a bike rally or just a fun weekend. In getting there you would most likely cross the famous Hoover Dam. And if you have been there lately, you know what kind of mess that can be getting back across the dam to come home. If you have done the ride in the last couple of years you have seen the bridge that they are building that will alleviate the bottleneck to cross the dam. This bridge, known as the Hoover Dam Bypass, although it is officially called the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, is really an engineering marvel that has intrigued me since I first saw it a couple of years ago.

When complete, it will provide a new link between the states of Nevada and Arizona using Hwy. 93.  In an incredible feat of engineering, the road will be supported on the two massive concrete arches which jut out of the rock face. The arches are made up of 53 individual sections each 24 feet long which have been cast on-site and are being lifted into place using an improvised high-wire crane strung between temporary steel pylons. The arches will eventually measure more than 1,000 feet across.  In the following pictures taken a couple of months aga, the structure looks like a traditional suspension bridge.  But now that the arches are complete, the suspending cables on each side have been removed. Extra vertical columns are being installed on the arches to carry the road.

The following link will take you to some awesome pictures obviously taken from a helicopter or plane showing the stages of construction a couple of months ago. Click Here for Photos.

To see current progress you can go to the Live Web Cam. You can zoom in or out and move the camera angle by drawing a new box with your cursor in the section below the live cam. You can also go to the construction photo album to see the latest photos that are posted. Click Here. Or go to http://www.hooverdambypass.org/ for all information. Enjoy!
