Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
11/15/06

Greetings Riders,

Well, we are back safe and sound from another year at the Rocky Point Rally. The weather was perfect for the entire Rally and the attendance had increased from last year to an estimated 8,000-10,000 riders. As usual, it was an interesting time as things are done a little different in Mexico than they are in the United States. harmless antics that would get you hauled away in Laughlin are generally accepted here, and somehow it works. It is not total lawlessness, but at times would seem like a form of organized chaos. Whatever label you want to put on it, no one gets hurt and everyone has a good time.

We started the ride at Arrowhead HD on Thursday morning for a leisurely cruise to Rocky Point stopping at the poker stops and making our usual stop at the Dairy Queen in Ajo. There were hundreds of bikes along the only route making their way to the border. We made the poker stop at Vasquez in Sonoyta, MX and then were on our way for the 60 mile ride to Rocky Point. It was an early night for us after a great dinner at Lapa Lapa on the Malecon, our favorite place to eat in Penasco, a stop by Hacienda Las Fuentes and then a quick stop at Manny's before heading home.

Friday we all met up at Playa Bonita for the Resort Ride that would take us to the Mayan Palace for a great breakfast buffet and then back to Sandy Beach for more food by Saxon Motorcycles. Of course, the Rally is just not the same without a trip to JJ's Cantina overlooking Cholla Bay on a Friday afternoon. Friday is my favorite and most relaxing day at the Rally. You don't ride very far, you don't have a big agenda, but before you know it, the sun is setting and you are asking yourself, "What did I do today?" The answer is "not much", but it took all day to do it! I guess that is the charm of old Mexico. Time is not an important issue. In fact, if you will notice, you don't see any clocks on the walls down there. Maybe that is why it is a place that Americans can finally relax "para un momento".

Saturday the action moves to the Malecon in Rocky Point. This is where thousands of riders will descend on the street that is normally a quiet tourist area and is home to the local fish markets and curio shops. On this day however, the Malecon turns into one long burnout pit as thousands of bikes will roll through the crowds of people on the streets and entertain those on the rooftops and 2nd story patios that come to watch the action. This year the Malecon Plaza was also the ending location for a Discovery Channel Biker Build-off. At 1:00pm I was on my way to another motorized hang glider ride to get some photos from the air. Around 3:00pm a several hundred riders made their way to Fremont St. for the start of the parade through Rocky Point where local families will line the streets while the riders throw candy to kids. This one was even sporting the American Flag and Mickey Mouse. This is always a good time as the locals appreciate the parade.

Saturday night, the action moves to the Mirador district on Matamoras for a street party with bands at both ends of the street. Mogollon was the headliner this year rocking the huge crowd and sounding better than ever. For us it was an early night to get ready for an early departure on Sunday morning. One of the downsides of this Rally is negotiating the border on the way home. This year was no different, in fact in was a lot worse. Border wait times were up to 4 hours for some. Getting through the border at busy times is like trying to pour 10 gallons of water through a 2 gallon funnel. It just isn't going to move very fast and will soon overflow. That is what happened on Sunday morning. The best suggestion is to leave by 7am or come back Monday morning.

For us it was another fun time at the Rocky Point Rally. As with any event, some will see it as the perfect time and others will have run into some problems. I'm sure that is the case here as well, especially dealing with language differences and local authorities. But overall, Lyman has done a nice job of building this event and negotiating hurdles as they are thrown at him. I know it is a very difficult task. I am expecting even more changes next year. We will have to wait and see.

I had so many pictures again this year that I put them into 2 separate galleries.
