Greetings Riders,

If you missed the newsletter last week with the story and photos from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Click Here to View.

With the weather getting a little cooler here in the valley and the days getting shorter, it means that it will be getting a lot cooler up North and our window for riding up there narrows. So a lot of us are going to be looking rides around the valley to keep us entertained. One of my favorite rides around the Phoenix area is the ride out to Tortilla Flat on Route 88 from Apache Junction. As many of you know, this road has been in pretty bad shape for a couple of years with the decay of the road making it less than desirable to ride a motorcycle out there. With that in mind, I have some good news and some bad news.

The bad news is that this road will be under construction for the next year and will be limited to one lane in each direction for several months which will make a ride out there a challenge as well as not much fun. Not only will you have to deal with the bad road that is already there, you would have to deal with the crazy traffic and construction that will have the road torn up making an already narrow road a little more dangerous.

The good news is that by the Fall of 2018, they expect to have this 17 mile stretch of Route 88 completely fixed and repaved which will include widening and reconstructing some of the more difficult corners as well as paving some of the pullouts. This has always been one of the motorcycle riders favorite routes and when finished, it will be the best pavement as well. While I don't like the fact that I can't ride out there right now, I am really excited to once again enjoy one of the my favorite routes enjoying fresh pavement. I will keep you informed as to the progress.

In the meantime, if you need a quick ride there is great pavement on the ride out to Bartlett Lake.

Here are the details from ADOT as to the work that will be done on SR 88.

SR 88 restrictions near Apache Junction start Monday (Nov. 27)
Lane closures part of $6.5 million improvement project

Drivers who use State Route 88 (the Apache Trail) for travel between Apache Junction and Tortilla Flat should allow extra time starting Monday, Nov. 27, due to work on a $6.5 million improvement project.

SR 88 initially will be narrowed to one lane along a 3-mile stretch of the historic roadway starting about 3 miles northeast of Apache Junction, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. When the highway is restricted, flag crews will alternate traffic through the work zone one direction at a time.

Total project will be on 17 miles of State Route 88 located through Tonto National Forest lands, beginning approximately 3 miles east of Apache Junction and ending 7 miles east of Tortilla Flat (milepost 203 to 220). Work on the entire 17-mile project is scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays. No weekend or holiday work is scheduled. The improvements are scheduled for completion by fall 2018.

The project will rehabilitate the existing pavement within the project limits, and includes the following:
*Adjusting roadway curves at six locations
*Paving selected pullouts
*Updating signage and pavement markings
*Repairing the concrete ford across Tortilla Creek near Tortilla Flats
*Removing rocks to limit rock fall onto the roadway
*Removing and replacing guardrail
Area includes Apache Junction to an area east of Tortilla Flat within the Tonto National Forest (mileposts 203 to 220).

Drivers should use caution when approaching and traveling through work zones and watch for construction crews and equipment. For more information about the SR 88 improvement project, visit azdot.gov/SR88. A one-day, six-hour closure near Tortilla Flats will be needed for boulder removal in mid-December

Here is an app that you can download that can be very useful all over the state, particularly when you are traveling on I-17 North where there seems to be a lot of traffic accidents and road closures. When a freeway closure or other major traffic event occurs, this free app available at ADOTAlerts.com will send critical information directly to app users in affected areas – where possible, in advance of alternate routes. You can also get it on your Google Play Store for Android and the App Store for I-phone.

Please Ride Safe!
Barry
