Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
Riding weather around the valley is just great right now and last weekend Mrs. C. and I took advantage of it by making a few rounds on the West side of town. We did a tour of MMI to see how they train those that are working on our bikes. I had no idea as to the extent that these people are trained and the support from the manufacturer. If you ever get a chance, take the tour. We then dropped by AZ Victory and took a demo ride on the Hammer and Jackpot. These are really nice bikes and according to sales figures are going higher when others are declining. It was then on to the Stubbs Open House for a snack and then to Arrowhead for the Rocktoberfest festivities.
Next we took the 101 down to the Cardinals Stadium for the International Motorcycle Show. Wow! I was really impressed with this show, the best laid out and appealing motorcycle show I have ever seen in the State of Arizona. If you like lots of hardware and eye candy in a visually appealing setting featuring just about every motorcycle brand you can think of, don't miss this show next year. While we were there, both of us took a demo ride on the Victory Vision. I have to admit, that bike looked a little overwhelming for Mrs. C., but she did fine with it. It is a really nice cruiser and they have done a great job with it, but there are still a couple of major things they need to address. The incredible heat coming off of the motor will be a deterrent for most riders and the clunky transmission would get a little old too. We finished the beautiful Arizona evening at Westgate for the Sugar Ray concert hosted by the Superbowl committee that was very enjoyable. There are no shortage of events going on this weekend either. Check the Events Calendar for all of the things to do. Click Here for some snapshots of the weekend.
If you haven't taken a look at the Classifieds yet, Click Here. There have been more things sold this week, including an enclosed trailer, a motorcycle and I actually took advantage of them as well by selling my Screamin' Eagle slip on pipes. Parts go well. If you have a garage full of spare parts, take a few minutes and put them on. It is only $10 for 60 days. You can upload 5 photos per ad. So you could easily put 5 parts on one ad.
One more exciting bit of news. A producer from ABC World News Tonight in New York called me this week and is interested in doing a story on the Cyclerides.com Hearts To Heroes event to be run on the program prior to Veterans Day. I sent her the DVD of the event and she said was incredible and that they were very interested in showcasing how we support our troops here in Arizona. This is a big complement to all of you. I will let you know when it is going to air. If you attended the event and want a memento, The Hearts To Heroes DVD is available on the site. I got the shipping costs down and was able to lower the price to $12 that includes shipping and a Ride Pin. Click Here to order your copy.
Colorado Trip 2007 Day 6 - Part 2
Day 6 was one of my favorite days on the trip. There was so much to write about and
so many pictures, that I had to break it up into two parts. But actually,
if you wanted to spend some time in Leadville soaking up some history, it is not a stretch to make this into a
couple of days. But with time restraints for the trip, we forged on to what was one of my most enjoyable segments.
It was now almost 2pm and we continued South on 24 to Hwy. 82 that took us through Twin Lakes, Independence
Pass and into Aspen. The ride on 82 is
fantastic. If you are ever in the area and don't want to go all the way to Carbondale, it would be well worth the
ride to Aspen and then turn around and come back. Twin Lakes is an old town originally settled in 1865 and became
a stop on the shipping route between Aspen and Leadville. You can stop and see some old Historic buildings in this
small town. Moving on down the road toward Independence pass you will start to see a lot more trees, particularly
Aspen, and some stunning scenery.
When you reach the crest of Independence Pass at 12,095 feet you will have some incredible views of the road and valley below. Some stunning Colorado views. As you work your way down the hill toward the city of Aspen, you will see where it got the name. The Aspen trees are thick along with the vegetation that grows literally on the white line on the side of the road. The curves, the rock outcroppings and the dense foliage with trees draping the road make this the perfect motorcycle experience. One thing that completely amazed me was how the road itself narrows so much in a couple of areas. The sign says narrow road, but I don't see how two F-150's could ever pass each other at these points. The route from Hwy. 24 to Aspen is 43 miles of beauty, but the last 20 miles from the pass to the town is a stretch you just don't want to end. Make sure and view some of the best pictures of the trip from this segment below.
The city of Aspen sits along the southeast (upper) end of the Roaring Fork Valley, along the Roaring Fork River, a tributary of the Colorado River about 40 miles south of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It is surrounded by mountain and wilderness areas on three sides: Red Mountain to the north, Smuggler Mountain to the east, and Aspen Mountain to the south. Aspen got its roots in the winter of 1879 as a silver mining town that rivaled the production in Leadville. Like most mining towns in the 1880's it swelled in population, wealth and the finest amenities of the day. But when the repeal of the Sherman Act in 1893, mines closed and the town dried up overnight as miners were off to the next boom area to replace their wages. In 1946 the Aspen Skiing Corporation was founded and transformed this town of 700 into the thriving upscale ski town that it is today. Over 5,000 residents call Aspen home, but many more visit through the ski season. As you ride through the town you will enjoy many old and historic homes and buildings in this quaint little town of 5000 at the base of the mountain.
I wish we could have had more time in Aspen, but as we were sitting at a little corner coffee shop taking a break, a fellow rider who happened to be a resident of the area told us that we should spend the night in a historic old hotel called the Redstone Inn in Redstone, Colorado. He said it was only 47 miles away, but since it was so late in the afternoon, we had better hit the road to avoid the massive amounts of deer that we would have to encounter along the way. So I retrieved the phone number of the Inn from my GPS, reserved a room and we were on our way.
Along with all of the other reasons, this is one of the great things about travel on a motorcycle. Other riders are always eager to lend a hand or give you a good tip to make your trip better. And the advice to spend the night in Redstone couldn't have been better. We followed 82 North to Carbondale and then headed South on 133 the 17 miles to the Redstone Inn. The Inn was built in 1900 by coal mining entrepreneur John Cleveland Osgood and it is now one of the Historic Hotels of America on the National Trust for Historic Preservation. John Osgood did more than run a profitable mining enterprise. In order to improve the living conditions of the miners and as a social/industrial experiment, he constructed 84 Swiss chalet style homes in Redstone to house miners with families and an elegant 20 room inn (Now the Redstone Inn) for his bachelor employees, all of which featured indoor plumbing and electricity, a luxury for the times. The Inn has since been completely remodeled and is a wonderful place to spend the night and take a walk down the old Redstone community. I would make it a point to stay there again.
This entire segment of the trip is only 100 miles from Leadville to Redstone, but is some of the most enjoyable that you will find in that area. Like I said before, if you were just heading up through the middle of Colorado, it would be worth your while to just make the ride up to Aspen and turn around and come back. This will be a memorable route for me and one that I will soon do again.
I think the pictures this week are among the best that I have taken on this trip. The pictures don't capture all of the beauty of this part of Colorado, but it is a start until you can experience it yourself. Next week I will end the series of the Colorado Trip by finishing with the ride around the San Juan Loop, including photos from my favorite 23 mile stretch of road that I have ever done.

3rd Annual Shriner's "We Ride So Kids Can Walk". Personal Note from Barry. Not many charities do we get the opportunity to see where the money is going and how it is spent. I was invited to visit one of the Shriner Clinics about a month ago in Phoenix and was amazed and humbled by what this organization does for kids, ALL at their own expense which comes from what they raise at various fund raisers like this one. These kids with pediatric disorders including problems with bones, joints, muscles, orthopedic deformities, etc. are diagnosed at a local clinic and then flown to one of the 22 Shiners hospitals for treatment, at no cost to the family. I walked away with a whole new admiration of the guys with the oversized funny hats and the undersized bicycles. I would highly encourage supporting this event. Click Here to learn more about the Shriners and their purpose.
The run on November 3rd Shiners"We ride so kids can walk" is growing. We have 50 vendor spaces filled up and identifying more space for additional vendors that are calling. Johnny Cash, Elvis, and some other singers will be there for entertainment. Food, Beer Garden, over $65,000.00 in door prizes and silent auction items. Cost is only $15.00 for the ride. $15.00 gets you chances at many door prizes, a pin, patch and raffle ticket for the Grand Prize. Grand Prize is 08 Dyna Fat Bob or Custom Softtail or $15,000.00. Your choice. Its not a poker run, its a sponsor recognition run. Visit as many stops that are on the run guide. The more stops you visit, the more chances you get for door prizes. See web site; www.el-zaribah.org/mcrun.htm The web site is being updated daily.
