Cyclerides.com Weekly
Update
10/17/12
Greetings Riders,
I hope that you are all enjoying the break in the weather that we have
finally gotten here in the valley.
Riding in 95 degree high temps
is sure a lot better than 115. The days are bearable and the mornings and
evenings are fantastic. Plan to head out to a bike night this week and take
advantage of it. Crowd favorite “Kung Fu Grip” will be performing at the
Cyclerides.com Westgate Bike Night presented by Arrowhead HD and Ridenow Powersports this Thursday night.
We will also have a couple of classic cars on display this week that you will
want to see. Look forward to seeing you there. And don’t forget Mixteca on the West side for live music on the
patio on Friday night and Mad Dog Saloon on the East side on Tuesday’s.
It is always exciting when a dealership decides to make an investment in
the motorcycling community
and we are fortunate to live in a city
where we have many mega dealerships that strive to provide sales, services and
the desire to entertain us. The most recent addition to this, all in one
concept, is in North Scottsdale where GO
AZ Motorcycles and Harley-Davidson
of Scottsdale have just announced the opening of their World-class dedicated
training and demo facility, located just South of Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale,
directly behind the Go AZ Motorcycles complex, and just South of HD of
Scottsdale at 15500 North Hayden Road. Not only is this complex designed as a
training facility, it will also serve as an event center. The first concert
scheduled is George Thorogood and 38 Special on October 20th, more about that
later.
Yesterday, I road over to HD of Scottsdale to get a tour from Justin,
General Manager of HDS. The new training facility encompasses 3 acres, 2+ acres
of
riding
track and an additional area that houses administration offices and
class
rooms for motorcycle training programs. This is a huge slab of concrete that
is permanently marked for motorcycle training that will be implemented by
T.E.A.M. Arizona Motorcycle Training. Underneath the track, completely
underground is 70,000 square feet of space designated for both dealerships
inventory
storage
and customer motorcycles that are in for service.
The really fascinating part of this World-class motorcycle training
facility is the Cruiser and Sport Bike
Motorcycle
Simulators.
This is the first and only facility in the United
States to offer this technology to civilians. It was told to me that these
simulators were commissioned by the U.S. Government to teach soldiers returning
from active duty to learn how to safely ride a sport bike. Apparently, there
were a lot of guys coming back from after spending a year overseas and taking
their money and buying motorcycles and being killed or seriously injured due to
not knowing how to ride. So the government spent millions of dollars making
these sims specifically for motorcycles which was not an easy task given the
physics with riding a motorcycle.
There are only 100 of these simulators in government use right now. Due to the very high cost of $250,000 a piece, there has not been a
commercial application for these simulators, until now. Bob Parsons, owner of HD
of Scottsdale and Go Daddy fame thought it would be a good idea to add two of
these machines into his new training facility to give a new rider the ultimate
training experience from ground up and the feel for riding before they ever get
on a real bike.
The bike simulator utilizes an actual
motorcycle
chassis that allows the certified trainers to train on
everything from starting the bike to basic riding elements as well as advanced
riding maneuvers, all in a safe environment. The system ensures the bike's
handling accurately mimics that of a real motorcycle. No longer will it be
necessary for a new rider, who has never been on a bike before, to jump on a
bike and ride without basic riding skills.
I had the chance to saddle up one of these bikes and give it a go
myself.
The bike sits on a pedestal that is hooked to a computer that
controls the movement. As I said above, it is a real motorcycle chassis, so you
turn the key to start it, shift gears, etc., just as you would a real bike. In
front of you are three 55” monitors, one directly in front and one angled on
each side to give you a motion experience simulating your movement. There are
also little pip’s on both sides of the main screen that act as virtual rear view
mirrors.
There are many different categories of training from parking lot training
to city traffic or open road riding. I chose the country road
riding for scenery and variation of turns. For a guy who does a lot of riding, I
thought I could just get on this thing and go. That thought was far from the
truth as I let out on the clutch to get going, about fell over to the left, over
compensated right, then left again and then ran directly into the guard rail.
Fortunately there is a reset button and all was erased. Don’t you wish we could
do that in real life?
The next time out I got going I was all over the road until I got somewhat
used to it before not knowing that I was doing 95 MPH into a 40 MPH corner
promptly biffing once again. This simulator is so real that it
actually switches to the physics of counter steering after 15 MPH just like a
real motorcycle. The trick is getting the feel for your speed and the amount of
counter steer that you use. When we are riding our real bikes we don’t even
think about that, it is just feel. Here, you have to acquire a feel for how it
is going to react. Once you get the hang of it and start watching your
speedometer on the bike, using the brakes and feathering the throttle
appropriately, you can do pretty good. But it does take a while.
I can see that if a student masters this simulator and completes the
program that they put you through in traffic, cornering, etc., that
it will absolutely make you a better rider on your own bike. HD of Scottsdale
will utilize this for customers to use as well as T.E.A.M Arizona using it for
training classes. It was not known yet what the procedure or cost will be to use
the sims outside of a training class. There will be tours of this room as well
demo rides on the simulators at Bob’s Biker Blast from 10AM – 6PM this Saturday.
This is a one time only opportunity to give them a try for free! More
information on the party below.
As I said above, I did give this a try and did a short 2 minute video
of my last attempt with some commentary along the way. This route took me
through the country side and then into snow where things went terribly wrong.
Not sure if it was the snow or the 110 MPH that I was doing on it. Take a look
at the video of my attempt at the simulator and see for yourself. Click Full Screen in lower right for best
viewing.
These new motorcycle simulators are an amazing work of technology and I’m sure will be very useful for new or advanced riders to hone their
skills. I can’t wait to see some of you trying these on Saturday. At the least
it will provide onlookers with some very good entertainment.
See you there on Saturday and the
Charley Vidal Ride
on Sunday where Mrs. C. and I will be leading the ride from Arrowhead HD to the
Hideaway for the event. Details below.

Tidbits and Updates:
UPDATE:
Charley Vidal
Ride. As you know by now,
Charley had beaten lung cancer
and now it is back and giving him a good battle.
He just spent the last 5 days in the hospital with pneumonia as a result
of recent chemo. We are not sure if he is going to be able to make it
to the event, but we are all going to be there to support him anyway and are
arranging to Skype him to the Hideaway if he cannot make it. Mrs. C. and I will
be leading a ride out of the Arrowhead HD to the Hideaway at 11AM Sunday,
October 21 or you can go straight to the Hideaway. Mark from the Hideaway is
donating the food and it is a $10 donation for a food ticket that all goes to
Charley. See you there. Details below.
ATTENTION !!!
Article below written By Bobbi Hartman of the MMA regarding
emission testing for motorcycles.
Are you ready for the Greatest News ever, that many of us have
been working on for the better part of 10 years? The EPA is about to APPROVE the
ADEQ's State Implementation Plan (SIP), requesting the ELIMINATION OF
EMISSIONS ON MOTORCYCLES IN MARICOPA COUNTY!!!
I just got a call from the Arizona Department of Environmental
Quality (ADEQ), stating the following:
As recently reported, the ADEQ had been expecting a
'Disapproval Notice' from the EPA on the last SIP that they submitted, due to
the Revision of Ozone Levels at the federal level. Come to find out that when
EPA recently submitted their disapproval draft to their D.C. headquarters for
approval, the D.C. office apparently had a change of mind and REVERSAL OF
OPINION from the last time they dictated what the EPA was to do. According to
ADEQ this morning, the D.C. office just told the EPA that they were wrong, and
that the EPA was to APPROVE the ADEQ's request for elimination of yearly
motorcycle emissions in Maricopa/Pinal County (AREA A).
What happens next?
ADEQ expects the proposed EPA action to be signed this week
and published in the Federal Register within 2 weeks. That starts the
approximately 30 day Public Comment and EPA response to Pubic Comment period.
Once that is complete, the EPA will sign the final action and then have 2 weeks
to publish that in the Federal Register. The entire process should be FINAL and
EFFECTIVE 60 days from that time frame. This will make our Revised Arizona
Statute become law.
The ADEQ will be working with Arizona's MVD during that 60 day
time frame, to REVISE the registration forms to no longer state the requirement
of emissions on those motorcycles registered in AREA A.
Bottom line is that the elimination of yearly emissions on
motorcycles in AREA A should be effective by the end of first quarter of 2013 or
before.

Motorcycle riders are a very giving group and are always there to help our
riding brothers in need. A great guy that a lot of us know, Charley Vidal,
(See Photos) who also happens to
be a good friend of mine is very much in need of our help. Charley has always
been there to support just about anything to do with motorcycling and the first
to spread the word and participate in charity rides over the years, and has
certainly supported my events over the last 12 years of which I am very
appreciative.
Charley had beaten lung cancer a year ago, and now it is back
and giving him a good battle. He is not able to work full time and his medical
will not cover treatment until he reaches $6,000 out of his own pocket. He needs
to raise this money so that he can concentrate on getting well and get the
treatment that he needs to beat this for a second time.
Details:
There is going to be a benefit for Charley at the Hideaway in Cave Creek,
where he is affectionately known as “The Mayor”, on October 21st
from Noon – 5PM. You can go directly to the Hideaway or join Mrs. C. and
Myself as we will lead a ride that will be leaving from Arrowhead HD at 11am to
go to the Hideaway. Arrowhead Harley will be providing doughnuts and
coffee starting at 9AM where you can also donate that day. Mark Bradshaw from
the Hideaway is donating the food to help Charley. You will be able to buy a
meal ticket for $10 that will ALL go to Charley or just simply make a donation.
There will also be a silent auction at the Hideaway with many great items for
you to bid on. You can make donations direct to Charley at Chase Bank, savings
account # 000003034911791.
UPDATE: Charley just spent the
last 5 days in the hospital with pneumonia as a result of recent
chemo. We are not sure if he is
going to be able to make it to the event, but we are all going to be there to
support him anyway and are arranging to Skype him to the Hideaway if he cannot
make it.
