Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
10/12/11

Greetings Riders,
I hope everyone is enjoying the break in the weather in the Phoenix area, I know I am. It has made for great rides home from bike nights. The motorcycle is once again the first choice of transportation as I have logged over 1300 miles on the yellow bike since it returned from Trask Performance getting it back on the road. The motor is running strong and the flush job seems to be working just fine.

Last week I finished the story of our 2011 ride covering the route from Jackson, WY to Phoenix, AZ that included 178 beautiful photos from the 2 days and a wrap up of the whole trip. If you missed it, Click Here to catch up. I have also updated the Archives section for the newsletter and added a Google Search of the site for you to use “keywords” to find past articles. To give it a try, Click Here.

The Cyclerides.com Westgate Bike Night will be changing nights next week. Due to Coyote games at the Jobing.com Arena on Thursday’s, we will be moving to Wednesday nights on October 19th for the remainder of the final 5 nights of the season. Thursday, October 13th will be the last Thursday night for this year. Please spread the word to your riding buddies. This week is Hot Rod theme night featuring the Live Music of “Still Cruising”.

The Cyclerides.com Mesa Riverview Bike Night will remain on Friday nights. This week featuring the the Live Music of Riverview favorite “Attitude Cat”.  If you want to ride in an listen to some good live music, this is the band. We have had these guys a couple of times before and they are really good.

Ride Idea:
New Asphalt on 89A Up Mingus Mountain and little known Page Springs Rd.

It is that time of year to be getting out on the bike for some longer rides. As most of you know we have some great riding within just a few miles of the Phoenix area. One popular road for riders from the valley is Hwy. 89A through Jerome. If you are new to Arizona, or just looking for a good ride idea, an awesome 200 + mile route is to go Hwy. 74 to 60 to Wickenburg, then catch Hwy. 93 to 89 and follow that to Prescott. This will take you up Yarnell Hill through Yarnell and Peoples Valley leading you to 16 miles of EXCELLENT riding through the twisties of the Prescott National Forest dropping you in to Downtown Prescott. This is a really good ride.

From Prescott continue on Hwy. 89 to 89A to the old Copper Mining/Ghost Town of Jerome, AZ. Most of you who ride in the state know this route well. 89A takes you up Mingus Mountain through a reportedly 158 curves to over 7000 feet and down into Jerome through on one of the prettiest 14 miles stretches of road in the state. But what you don’t know, and is the reason for me bringing this to your attention is that they have just resurfaced the asphalt on this stretch of road and it is FANTASTIC to ride ride now. The road is black as coal, crisp new yellow lines as you will see in the photos and rides like butter.

Mrs. C. and I did this route a couple of weeks ago and both thoroughly enjoyed the resurfaced road and can’t wait to do it again real soon. Once you hit Jerome you can grab a burger at the Haunted Hamburger or continue on down to old Main St. in Cottonwood to one of our favorites the Tavern Grille. Now here is another nugget of a road that you might not know about. Depending on your timing, you can either catch Hwy. 260 back to I-17 and head home.

OR, if you have just a little more time, you can head towards Sedona and take little known Page Springs Rd. This is an awesome road that not many know about that follows Oak Creek as it meanders through lush green trees and past 3 wineries including Page Springs Cellars on the way to Cornville Rd. that will take you back to I-17. There are tastings at each of these wineries along the way. Page Springs Rd. is only about 8 miles long and will only add about 13 miles to your ride back to the valley from Cottonwood. I’m sure you will really like this little nugget.

This is about a 250 mile ride from I-17 and the 101 that would get you to some cooler weather while giving you a good mixture of high desert and forest riding with some great old towns to visit along the way. It would be an excellent ride this weekend or next weekend to include with the Peoria Centennial Arizona On The Move Ride that is already going to Prescott.

Enjoy the ride and the great new asphalt on Mingus Mountain. Click Here to view a Google Map of this route. Here are 54 Great Photos of the ride up Mingus Mountain and Jerome. Click “Slideshow” in upper right for best full screen viewing.

Tidbits and Updates:

**New Bike Build Update. The parts have now left fabrication and are at C.R. Designs for paint. It ends up that only one part on the bike does not have fiberglass fabrication and that is the front fender. This has turned out to be a way bigger project than I had envisioned, but I think we have created a really cool bike in the process. There has been a little change in color as I have decided to go with Boyd Coddington Hot Rod Red. With the Corvette theme, it just seemed like the thing to do. One recent piece that Jim fabricated was the Chin Spoiler that I thought came out real nice. Click Here to view. It is the last picture on the page.

**Mark Your Calendar!

We are going to expand the frequency for the Fall season at Westgate as there will be 10 nights this year. Then we will switch to Wednesday nights for the next 5 from Wednesday, October 19th through Wednesday, November 16th. Event Time 5-9 PM. This year we will be doing theme nights that will incorporate classic cars, music and Extreme Machines. The next 2 will be 60’s and 70’s with classic cars reflecting the era.
