Weekly Update

Greetings Riders,

If you missed the newsletter last week about LEAF-Peeping in Northern Arizona, Click Here to View. This is an excellent article about where to see the leaves changing and when. Check out the Leaf-ometer to see how the changes are coming. If for some reason the email does not make it to your inbox, you can always view it online at

About a month ago I posted some photos of flying along the Pacific Coast Highway at about 1000 feet just out over the water. Click Here to View Photos. The photos are fantastic! It really shows you another view of one of the best roads to ride in the United States. This week I will show you some photos from the road and give you some ideas about how to ride it.

The Pacific Coast Highway 1, aka PCH 1, from San Simeon to Monterey is always ranked in the top 5 of roads to ride in the U.S. and is easily in my top 5. I have ridden it several times and it never gets old as it seems to almost take on a different personality due to the weather that particular day and the direction you are traveling on it. My personal favorite way to ride this stretch of road is from the North to the South. The reason is that this puts you on what I like the to call the "view" side of the road. The outside of the road gives you a much better view of the ocean and cliffs below. Of course, you will also have to keep an eye on what you are doing as not all of the road has guard rails, and it is a long way down as you might have seen from the photos above. One thing you might be surprised about on this ride is that it is not all with a view of the ocean. You will also be riding through some pines and cedar trees along the way.

When to go:
April/May or September through November is usually the best time to ride the PCH for a couple of reasons. The weather is usually better due to less fog on the coast and there is less vacation type traffic. Having both no fog and less traffic is a huge plus on this particular road. There are very few places to pass much past San Simeon. So if you happen to get stuck behind a motorhome, you might as well save yourself some aggravation and pull over at one of the many scenic overlooks and let it get well ahead of you.

Things to see:
1. I would suggest a stop at Hearst Castle which is at the southern end of the PCH in San Simeon. This house built by Randolph Hearst in the early 1900's is a sight to see. But you would need to budget around 3-4 hours to fully see this.
2. A good place to eat along the way that is also near the southern end of the road is at Gorda, CA which is about 26 miles North of San Simeon. It consists of a gas station selling gas that costs $6.99 per gallon, a restaurant with an outdoor patio and a great view of the ocean, and a small motel with rooms overlooking the ocean. There is also an ice cream shop if you just need a desert and want to take in the view.
3. One of our favorite places to stop on the is ride is a place called Nepenthe which is in Big Sur. This is a restaurant that is perched on the top of a hill overlooking the ocean. It has a Huge outdoor patio with a breathtaking view of the coastline looking to the South. The food is good, but fairly expensive. So if you are not ready to eat, be sure to stop here for some refreshments and soak in the sun and the beauty of the Pacific coast. I have never missed stopping here on our trips along the PCH.

If you don't have time to take your own bikes over there to do this trip, you can easily get commercial flights into Monterey, CA and then rent bikes from Eaglerider in Carmel, just South of Monterey. The fly and ride is a great way to do it. If you have 4 days to spend, you can fly in on a Friday, ride down to San Simeon and back to Monterey on Saturday. Ride North up to Alice's Restaurant along Skyline Dr. and back to Monterey on Sunday. Then either fly home Sunday evening or Monday morning.  For those with time issues, this is a great way to get in some outstanding riding in a short amount of time.

If you haven't yet done the Pacific Coast Highway on a motorcycle, be sure to put this on your list of things to do. It is one of the best and most memorable rides you will ever do. Here is a complete story that I did just on the PCH from a ride that we did back in 2008. This will give you details that I didn't include in this letter. Click Here to View.

This is first time since 2011 that we have done a bike night in the East Valley and I am excited to be bringing it back. We will be riding into Tempe Marketplace for 10 consecutive weeks on Thursday nights starting on September 13th and ending on November 15th.
This is a fantastic venue conveniently located at the Loop 101 & 202.
