Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
10/3/18

Greetings Riders,

If you missed the newsletter last week, Click Here to View.

Well, for those of you that live in the Phoenix area, I think we have finally turned the corner to what is the beginning of Autumn. As I look at the 10 Day weather forecast, I see no temps listed above 84 degrees, and evening temps in the low 60's. It has been a long time since I could say that. This kind of forecast means that there will be excellent riding weather for Bike Nights both riding to and riding home. The 2 Cyclerides.com Bike Nights are at Tempe Marketplace in Tempe on Thursday night with Live Music by "The Visitors" and Westgate Entertainment District on Friday in Glendale with Live Music by "Broken Toys". Dust off the bikes and enjoy the GREAT Riding Weather this week. See photos of Tempe Marketplace from last week with the new lighting on the palm trees. It made a huge difference. Click Here to View. You can also view photos from last week at Westgate with the Monkey Mixer on site. Click Here to View. We are talking about doing some other beer gardens there over the next 6 weeks. Stay tuned.

It is time for LEAF-Peeping in Northern Arizona.

As I mentioned above, Autumn is upon us which means that the leaves are changing rapidly at higher elevations in Flagstaff. This also means that we will all have another destination and an excuse to take a day trip for leaf peeping and viewing the fall colors the best way possible, from the seat of a motorcycle. The unobstructed 360 degree view from a motorcycle is by far the best way to view scenery, especially when it involves 60-70 foot tall trees. Two of the best places to plan your trip to view these fall colors is to take a ride up to Arizona Snowbowl in Flagstaff and Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona.

Snowbowl is known best for the skiing, but this time of year you can take a 7-mile cruise up Snowbowl Road to enjoy the scenic, changing colors of the mountains. Snowbowl Road from Hwy. 180 up to the ski lift is loaded with golden colored Aspens mixed with ponderosa pines that will definitely satisfy your desires to see natures beautiful phenomenon of brilliant color in landscape. And if you hit it just right with the wind blowing, you will witness a cascade of lemon and gold colored leaves blowing through the blue skies.

You can hike some trails while you are there to really be immersed in the colors. One of the popular trails that will drop you immediately into the vast aspen groves is the Kachina Trail. But if hiking is not your thing, you can also stop at Agassiz Lodge for food and then take the chairlift to the top of the mountain at 11,600 feet to really get a birds eye view from above. This is a beautiful sight to see and is one of my favorite things to do on my rides up to Snowbowl. To keep track of the best time to go you can check out the Leaf-ometer from the Flagstaff Convention and Visitors Bureau. It has updates from Arizona Snowbowl, the Forest Service, the Aboretum at Flagstaff and the Sedona Chamber of Commerce. Go to www.flagstaffarizona.org/leafometer.

Here is an update from the Arizona Snowbowl web page:

"Snowbowl will be open daily from October 5-21 for peak fall colors! Stunning golden hues begin to shine their light on the mountain in mid-October. Experience the autumn scenery by taking the Scenic Chairlift up to 11,500 feet—where aspen groves steal the show with their quaking leaves for as far as the eye can see. When you’re not enjoying the scenery from the Scenic Chairlift, explore Snowbowl‘s trails by foot or bike to find stunning fall colors. To learn the best eye-catching locations to spot fall colors, read our leaf-peeping guide."
See https://www.snowbowl.ski/ for all the information on times of operation.

Oak Creek Canyon will be the next spot that will be a kaleidescope of fall colors real soon. The route on 89A from Sedona to Flagstaff is another one of my favorite Fall rides as it has a lot of different colors along the way with the red rocks as a backdrop highlighting the leaves. It is a beautiful 25 mile ride that will have your head on a swivel trying to see everything along the way. Keep in mind that you will not be the only vehicle on the road this time of year, so
it is best enjoyed at a slow pace so that you do not miss anything, including the car in front of you. They say that this will be best viewed the latter half of October into November. The Leaf-peeping guide still has Oak Creek Canyon in the green zone. So you can keep checking back to that web site for updates.

Here is a quote from the Leaf-ometer site about Oak Creek Canyon:

"As part of the beautiful Coconino National forest, Oak Creek Canyon is a nature lover’s paradise. With a multitude of plants that change color during the autumn season, Oak Creek Canyon transforms into the perfect fall picture. Full of radiant oranges, glowing yellows and alluring reds, the Oak Creek Canyon is impeccable for hiking with the family or that romantic autumn drive. Located along Hwy 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff."

This past weekend we took a quick trip up to Telluride to see the Fall colors and attend an event called "Telluride Cars and Colors" that takes place every year. Not only is Telluride one of my favorite towns to visit any time of year, seeing the aspens in full golden glow throughout the town of Telluride and Mountain Village was absolutely beautiful. The weather was still in the high 60's to low 70's in the daytime which would have made for a fantastic and beautiful ride around the San Juan Loop on a motorcycle. The end of September is on my calendar for next year to experience this on a motorcycle. One of the prettiest Fall color exhibition that I have seen. I picked a few of my favorite photos that I took from the weekend to share with you. There are some really stunning shots.  I also posted some on the Cyclerides.com Facebook over the weekend.

This is a fantastic venue conveniently located at the Loop 101 & 202. We will utilize the street and courtyard area in the center of Tempe Marketplace and will be able to cruise through and park our motorcycles on the street that is normally closed to traffic. For those of you that have not been to Westgate, I like to call it the "Times Square of the Desert" that presents a great venue for a bike night that has been going on for 10 years as one of the biggest bike nights in the Southwest. Cruise and park on Coyote Blvd. next to the fountains, then visit the vendors and grab something to eat and drink at one of the many restaurants. Stay tuned for the food and drink specials.
