It was 71 degrees this morning when I got up. That
is definitely part of the recipe for great early morning and evening rides. I
would like to thank all of you that came out to the first Cyclerides.com bike
nights last week at Westgate and Mesa Riverview.
The band “56” rocked both places with 50’s music and a good time was had by all.
See photo links below. It was obvious we were all ready to have a good excuse
and destination to get the bikes out. This week it is 60’s night at both places.
We will have classic cars and Live Music from the 60’s. Nine more weeks to go
for this season. 70’s theme night next week and Monster Truck Night on October
6th and 7th. Paul Yaffe will be at Mesa Riverview Bike Night with his 1965
Cadillac and will be displaying his bikes in the Cyclerides.com Photo Gallery
along the live band “The Rave”. We will have 6 Classic Cars from the 60’s at
Westgate with Live Band Chris Putrino. See you there!
Last week I did a story on our visit to the Antelope Slot
Canyons near Page, AZ. This is a beautiful one of a kind experience
that you will really want to visit. There are also over 100 photos of the Grand
Canyon and Lake Powell from the air as well as the slot canyon. Click Here to
read the story and see photos.
This week I am going to jump back to Day 6 of our 2011 ride this
Summer. To catch up you can read Day 5
here. The focal point of this day was to ride Beartooth Pass in
Montana and Wyoming. We started the day in Gillette, WY and decided to knock off
a good 120 miles on the freeway while making our way to the scenic roads. We
hopped off I-90 at Ranchester to take Hwy. 14A through the Bighorn National
Forest on our way to Red Lodge, MT for the East entrance to Beartooth Pass. This
is a really good road if you are heading to Sturgis out of East Yellowstone.
Red Lodge, MT
is a really cool old town that has built itself into a year round
destination with skiing in the winter and tourist in the Summer.
Lots of old buildings, restaurants and retail businesses for you to enjoy. It
also doesn’t hurt that it is the only civilization near the Beartooth Pass for
all the motorcycle rider’s that cross it every Summer. If you are running low on
gas or need food, get it in Red Lodge before heading West.
Beartooth Highway has probably one of the most famous mountain passes in
the United States. The Beartooth All-American Road, also known as
the Beartooth Highway, officially opened on June 14, 1936. This year marked the
its 75th Anniversary. A lot of the early acclaim for this road came when it was
first referred to as "the most beautiful drive in America", by CBS correspondent
Charles Kuralt. Charles was an on the road television correspondent that claimed
the Highway is a destination in its own right. It is the highest elevation paved
highway in the Northern Rocky Mountains open to travelers seasonally from mid
May to mid October.
The Beartooth Highway is a 68-mile travel corridor, beginning on the East
side just south of Red Lodge, Montana at an elevation of 6400 feet
and ending on the West near the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park
and Cooke City, Montana, at an elevation of 7500 feet. In between those two
elevations, the road rises to 10, 947 feet at Beartooth Pass in Wyoming making
it the highest elevation highway in the Northern Rockies. The Beartooth
All-American Road passes through what is known today as the Beartooth Corridor.
Surrounded by the Custer, Gallatin, and Shoshone National Forests, traveling
parallel to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, and abutting Yellowstone National
Park, the Highway sits in a million-plus acre wilderness. It is one of the
highest and most rugged areas in the lower 48 states, with 20 peaks reaching
over 12,000 feet in elevation. In the surrounding mountains, you will see
glaciers on the north side of nearly every mountain peak over in the distance.
What makes this road so interesting to me, as well as other roads like
this, is the amount of work and planning that went into building the road. As you make your way East from Red Lodge and negotiate the first of 19
switchbacks that you will encounter along the 68 mile road, you can’t help but
look at the side of that nearly 11,000 foot mountain and wonder how in the world
they made a road through there. As it turns out, it wasn’t that easy. It took
them 5 years to construct this road. Three construction companies actually set
up a small city with their own electric plant to house the 170 men that it took
to do the work. If the workers were inclined they paid $1.35 per day for room
and board. Skilled labor was paid $1 per hour, unskilled $.60 per hour and both
got $.10 per hour extra for bad weather.
As you are working your up the switchbacks on the North side of the
mountain you will look down below to the road you were just
on all while watching the 20 peaks of over 12,000 feet slowly come
into view all around you. From the lodge pole pine forests outside of Red Lodge
to the Alpine tundra at the top, the Beartooth Highway will demonstrate a range
of ecosystems along your route. Once you get to the top you can walk out on the
that is just off the road that you will find there year round. Glaciers are also
visible on many of the peaks in the distance. The view is 360 degrees seemingly
endless and spectacular to say the least. This is where you can pick out
the 20 lakes visible from the summit along with the 20 peaks over 12,000 feet in
elevation. You will want to spend a few minutes at the top just to soak it up.
But not too long, because even in the middle of Summer it is cold and windy up
Coming down the mountain heading West you will serpentine down the switchbacks
heading toward Cooke City, MT and the Northeast entrance to
Yellowstone National Park. This is a very beautiful part of the ride as you will
relax and enjoy the beauty while coming back down to vegetation including
wildflowers, pine trees, lakes
Depending where your destination is going to be you can either turn South on the
Chief Joseph Hwy. 296 that will take you to Cody, WY, which is and EXCELLENT
road and highly recommended or continue on Hwy. 212 to Cooke City, MT which is a
We chose to spend the night in the very cool little town of Cooke City, MT
which is only a few miles from the Northeast entrance to
Yellowstone and is the gateway to the park. If you are going to stay in this
town, I would recommend getting reservations at least the morning of your stay
as there are not many rooms available, and if you don’t stay here, you will have
several miles to go to find lodging elsewhere in the park or Gardiner, MT. We
stayed at the Soda
Butte motel and I would highly recommend it. It is old without many
amenities, but it is really quaint and comfortable and even has a restaurant.
I’m sure you would enjoy your stay at the Soda Butte and Cooke City. We loved it
and plan to go back.
Tidbits and Updates:
**The new bike build is coming along, but much slower than I thought. What started out to be adding a piece of chrome to the fairing has turned
into a full blown custom theme bike modeled after a 1965 Mako Shark Corvette. I
had no idea customizing a bike could take this much time and effort. And I’m not
even doing the work. As it turns out, there is not one piece on this bike that
has not been customized in some way to fit the theme. Lots of cool little
trinkets also that will tie it all together to the Corvette. Hopefully will be
close to being out of fabrication by Monday. Then we can go to paint. Here is a
sneak peek. The front of the fairing is really cool. Will show that later. And
the inner fairing will really shock you, like nothing you have ever seen.
Hopefully will have the bike done by the last week of October. Click Here to
**One of the fun things of doing road trips on the bike is that you get to
see a lot of different things. Here is a pic I snapped in
Ranchester, WY. Apparently this is how they roll in Italy. Click Here.
