Cyclerides.com Weekly Update
6/23/10

Greetings Riders,

Well, I hate to do this, but I have to make a confession this week. A lot of times I sit down to write this letter and I have something in mind to write about. Maybe I will talk about a ride, a current event or tell a funny personal story. But this week. . . I got nothin'. After 10 years of doing this newsletter I've always seemed to find something. I've at times even started with nothing and it has turned into something. But the truth is this week, I've really got nothin'.

Now some of you reading this right now are glad about this turn of events. You've opened this email with a very limited amount of time knowing that I usually have something and planning to "Evelyn Woods" your way through it to skim the highlights. But now that I have told you early on that I've got nothin' this week, you can scroll through the upcoming events and be on your way, expecting something really good next week. But. . .

There are also some of you that have gotten your morning coffee or a cold drink expecting to sit down, open the Cyclerides.com Weekly Update and read about something related to your passion of riding, full of cutting edge insight and wit from a highly trained wordsmith. I mean really, how many days in a row can you pick up the Arizona Republic and read about the oil spill in the gulf, how many people hate SB 1070, who is boycotting Arizona and be reminded of the news that your home has lost another 10% in value from the month before? You deserve better than that and I do endeavor to give it to you 52 weeks a year.

But today, I've told you early on that I've got nothin' and you are apparently still reading this. Is it because you have only taken 2 sips out of your coffee and you were planning on one of my long laborious letters with endless detail, carefully crafted sentences and countless links to photos? Or is it because you don't know what to do with the rest of the 20 minutes that you had budgeted to drink your coffee and read the normally incredible riding insights with the occasional witty anecdotes that I usually bring you?

It might be because you have been reading the newsletter long enough to know that there have been times when it seemed that I started out with nothin', like today, but somehow it turned out to be something, and you were glad you stuck with it. And for those of you that were in a hurry and were glad that I saved you a bunch of time by giving you that little nugget at the start that I had nothin', why am I on the 5th paragraph and you are still reading this? Is it because you recognized early on that this was going to be a train wreck of epic proportions and you didn't want to miss it? Or is that you were hoping that I was just underselling the literary prowess of this letter and that somehow I would get it together before the end? Maybe, this actually IS something, wrapped in nothing.

Well, you were wrong, I've really got nothin'. But you still might get your payoff because it looks like this train is just about to run off the tracks unless I can pull something out of the hat real quick. So to at least reward those that invested the 10 minutes in the pot of coffee, for those that were running out the door and can't figure out why they are still reading this, and for those readers that after this letter, I have lost forever, I will give you what little I have for this week. Some might actually think it is kind of cool.

Wednesday I flew up to Show Low on business and on the way back we did a little detour over one of my favorite ride routes, the Salt River Canyon and Hwy. 60. This is a beautiful ride route that I really like and have always wanted to see from the air to share it with you. It is a great ride on the ground and impressive from the air as well. Click Here for a few photos.

Ok, so that was just a little better than nothin', but at least it was something. Thanks for your indulgence with my void of any real material. But it is still better than the Arizona Republic. And no, I haven't been drinking. Just out of material. Seinfeld got away with it for an entire show, thought I might get away with it for one letter. Hope to have somethin' next week. ;)

Ride Safe and stay cool,
Barry

Tidbits and Updates:

**A lot of you have asked what I do when not doing Cyclerides.com activities. About 10 years ago I developed a product called Hat Saver. You spray Hat Saver on the outside of your hat or cap and it keeps the sweat stains from ruining your hat. It has gotten 4 stars from Gold Magazine new products review, was featured in Golf Digest, Editors pick for holiday gift ideas in Golf Mag and was featured on QVC. In fact, it was highlighted in a segment yesterday on TV 3. I know a lot of you reading this right now wear hats and constantly ruin them, especially this time of year. Hat Saver will solve that problem for good and it also will work on bandanna's. You will be amazed at how good it works. It is sold online at www.hatsaver.com for $8.99 per can. For all of my Cyclerides readers I will give you the shipping for free. Normally $6.75. Just enter the coupon code CYCLERIDES for the discount. There is a 2 can minimum order. Click Here for the 1 minute TV3 spot from yesterday.

**This is the last night for the Westgate/Cyclerides.com Bike Night. I want to thank everyone for their participation this season. Stay tuned for upcoming individual nights in September - November.

**I just love following people on motorcycle road trips because I can so relate to what they are doing. And especially those that are out for their first big adventure. In these days of high technology, we at home can follow along. A friend of mine, Rob Silver left on Tuesday for a 7 day ride through Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. He is doing a daily blog and including photos. Really interesting to read his insights on what should be a life long memory. Click here for the blog. You can also follow him via the Spot Tracker. Click Here for the spot. He has also taken some great photos that you can link to at the top part of the blog. Enjoy.

**Many of you have heard about the Hoka Hey Challenge that is going on right now. E.B. Chester and several others from the valley are riding in the Hoka Hey Challenge that goes from Key West, Florida to Homer, Alaska. The first one there gets $500,000. E.B. is doing a blog keeping us up with the challenge. His group left Mesa, AZ for Key West on June 9th. You can see his brief daily entries in his blog and follow the group to Alaska. Click Here to Read. You can Google Hoka Hey Challenge and probably find a lot of other blogs.
